Bayseas 7, formerly at Victory Grill

The kitchen at Victory Grill used to be called "Bayseas 7 at Victory Grill". As of about five months ago, they are no longer cooking there and Victory Grill has a new kitchen staff and menu -- which is pretty good too.

But does anyone know where the Bayseas 7 went to? They turned out some really good soul food.

Where to buy coconut cups

I'm having a winter tiki party. I need cups made out of coconuts. Does any store in town sell them?

Sushi at Quality Seafood?

They have hamachi in their frozen case.

Frankly, I wouldn't go for their sushi. Their hamachi, tuna and salmon are ok, but not nearly as good as at a good sushi restaurant that sources their fish from different, sushi-oriented suppliers.

I often buy their fish to make at home, but I have no pretensions that it is great.

J Kelly's BBQ -- New on E. 11th

Victory Grill is pretty good -- their kitchen staff has changed as of about one month ago. The Bayseas folks are no longer cooking there. They have some good oxtails, but the rest of the selection is limited.

The Soul Food Wednesdays group that used to cook at Ben's are now at Gene's but they haven't been serving chicken and dumplings in a while, which was their best dish. They said their offerings have been limited lately due to staff changes. I wonder if they'll move back to Ben's/J.Kelly's now.

Oh, and Galloway's. I believe you are a fan of the place. Shoot me an email at mersenne44@gmail.com if you ever want to get soul food sometime.

J Kelly's BBQ -- New on E. 11th

No, I think the owner is J. Kelly who now owns (or owns part of) Gene's New Orleans.

Ode to the Krazy Drink at Short & Sweet

I saw it there and was totally clueless as to what it is. There was no signage, other than "Krazy Drink".

Where to find mentai (pickled cod roe)

I know you can buy a big pack at Asahi Imports for $20+. Where can I just order some from a sushi bar?

Sam's BBQ - Perceptor's Photo Report

Not quite a husband and wife team. Wanda is the boss and pitmaster and is kin to the namesake Sam -- who is deceased. Aaron is the fellow, but is not related to Wanda or Sam, by marriage or otherwise.

Nice photos.

Louisiana Swamp Thing and Crawfish Festival

http://www.roadwayevents.com/RoadStar...

It's this weekend downtown. Is it worth going for the food? There isn't much information about how much the food will cost, after you pay the $15 door. I'm betting the concessions will be pricey and mostly poor quality. But how about the crawfish boil?

Flying Saucer to Land in Austin!

I couldn't find a single beer on their website that Draught House or Gingerman don't have -- well, good, mostly Belgian styles anyway.

Asia Cafe better than ever!

There's another item that says "boned", which I think actually means has bones.

Chinese Dumplings

Shanghai, but they're often broken. I would take Chinatown's over Shanghai, but might as well give them a shot if you're a devotee.

Where you in Houston do you get them?

There a number of places that serve fine versions in Dallas, definitely better than what you can get here. Shanghai (in Dallas) is one.

Chinese Dumplings

Their soup dumplings are way too soggy and have too high meat::broth ratio. Both the meat and the skin are soggy.

Escolar Quest

It's not just a matter of not getting ill, but quality. I've tried to eat Central Market's raw salmon several times (bought on Thursdays, both farmed Atlantic and wild Pacific) and it has never tasted good. If I was ever served that level of quality in a sushi restaurant I would send it back.

Do you find their escolar (or any other fish) raw is up to par with what you get at a good sushi restaurant?

Sopa de Albondigas?

Yes, that's what made me ask. I'm curious how authentic the Soup Peddler version is.

TexMex in Central Austin that does not "Keep It Weird"

They make a special Jalisco-style barbacoa in addition to the conventional kind. It is a more orange/red color and appears to have more of a chile-based seasoning.

TexMex in Central Austin that does not "Keep It Weird"

A Jalisco thread would be groovy.

Looks like there's a bad place up north called Casa Chapala that is unrelated to the Taqueria Chapala on Cesar Chavez.

I was just at the latter the other day and enjoyed the Jalisco style barbacoa.

Any one have other thoughts about this place?

Feed Me Feed Me Feed Me Feed Me Feed Me Feed Me

I enjoyed Galloway's this year. Very good choice, sir.

Mine has been Lola's.

Too bad Ben's Longbranch is no more -- last time I checked. The Soul Food Wednesdays were very much in line with Galloway's fare.

Have you tried to eat it raw? I believe Thursday is when they get their escolar shipments.

Also a big fan of escolar sashimi.

Soul Food in Austin?

Ben's Longbranch has had a "closed for renovations" sign up for a while. Anyone know what's up? I'm afraid it could mean that it's closed for good.

Damn, their soul food Wednesdays was incredible.

ChowHound Assignment:Go A Place Never Reviewed On This Board.

I went to the cart in Primo's parking lot Saturday night but they did not have hog testicles. In fact, I inquired about them and they said they knew nothing about it. They did have ear and I believe neck. Those two I greatly enjoyed. There were two women working it and when I asked what the name of the cart was, they said it had no name but one of them joked that should call it Blanca's -- after herself.

So is there fresh wasabi the real thing, or otherwise a good sample? I haven't had the real thing before and would like to try it.

Very sorry to hear about your experience. I empathize with your parenting situation.

You sound quite knowledgeable about sushi. In light of your review, I will avoid this place.

Reggie's Trailer

I just checked today and the trailer is not there anymore. Usually when he's closed, the trailer is at least still there. Not sure what's happening. Most likely something innocuous. I expect him to be back soon.
