"Sundays are the Worst"

Sigh. Just as egregious as using "schizophrenic" for "frenetic." Or "Autistic" to describe "quirky". I could go on but I'll stop here.

It's nothing to be ashamed of but.......

No cell phone! I find that admirable. Just today was thinking, What if I ditched my iPhone? The thought if giving it up, mostly to abandon texting, is so enticing. Alas, I'm not ready to do it but you are an inspiration!

San Diego New Places Opening Thread Numero Tres.

In the old Juan Chou space there will apparently be a "pan Asian bistro":

Madrid, BCN & Granada - recs for non-foodies (but still good local food)

Sign up for a tapas tour through "Gourmet Madrid" when in MAD. The guides (Jaime or Ismael) take you to legitimate, non touristy spots in Las Letras neighborhood. You get to sample Spanish wines and delicious food. Highly recommended.

Diet Soda that Sh*t is going to kill you....especially if you are a woman.....

You really don't see how the public is affected by peoples' high sugar and sodium diets? How we end up paying, in for the rise in diabetes and heart disease, which is inevitable from drinking chronic diet soda? Sorry, it is not just a decision that lies in a vacuum, completely unaffecting public health care.

Diet Soda that Sh*t is going to kill you....especially if you are a woman.....

Agreed about the denial. I also wonder what kind of permanent joint and skeletal problems arise from long-term running.

pet peeves for other 'foodies'

I have been thinking about that Spain episode because of my time here in Madrid! Was so funny & believable. The recently traveled know-it-all!

Chicken Croquettes a forgotten food from my youth........??????

You can get you fill of croquetas.....in Madrid (!)
Here they are usually filled with Jason (ham) or cheese (usually a pungent kind.)

We grew up eating them but that's because my mom cooked Spanish food. And though I no longer eat pork, I find myself craving them.

Great coffee in SD..?

Your query was not addressed to me.
I can't help but throw in my opinion. This topic comes up quite frequently when discussing coffee shops with my friends. Black Horse in Normal Heights seems subdued and not as obvious in its quest to be cool.

C& T Collective exudes hipsterness once you walk in; the workshop-walls, minimalism aesthetics, typewriter vibe. Secondly, the owner and employees are dressed in hipster "gear" (far-reaching pun alluding to fixies) with their beanies, mustaches, flannels, skinnies, and boots.

Third? The attitude. You know, that Look Past the Customer, "I'm so bored here", "yes?" greeting.
And that is why I avoid the place and prefer Dark Horse.
DH's coffee is just as good with way friendlier service.
I hope to see a second location closer to me in Golden Hill. (Bonus for the vegan doughnuts.)

Curious to get jmtreg's response.

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants: Thread Four (2014 edition)

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. That location seems to struggle. I'd like to see a ramen/noodle shop go in. Not sure how South Park would receive that but it'd be a nice addition.

Have you tried one? Why the disdain for something you (most likely) have not tried? Oh wait...lemme guess......if it didn't come from a livin', breathin' animal, can't be good.

There's a whole new world out there. Take a risk. Try something new! Lentils! Quinoa! Black beans! Oh my.

I want to thank you for this suggestion to the OP.
Just booked a vino y tapas tour through Gourmet Madrid. Will be my first trip to Spain so this seems like a great way to getan intro to the food scene!

Salud.

Gross Food From the 1950s

Casseroles were popular for us growing up in the 70s and 80s but then withered away. My mom made the best ever:
Chicken enchilada casserole. It wouldn't get approved by any current diet but we gobbled that up. Mom showed her love through cooking.

Gross Food From the 1950s

"I can't imagine cooking anything...to gross people out."

People do silly things like that and buying second-hand ugly Xmas sweaters and wearing them to parties as a theme.

Yes, born smack dab in the middle of 1970s. And I agree many if our comfort foods were derived from mid c. Cuisine. Beef Stroganoff, Hamburger Helper, green beans with cream of chicken and onion crisps..
