Unicorn Magnum pepper mill
No you can't buy it at any retail stores in Vancouver. I have seen them at Sur La Table in Seattle. I ordered mine directly from their website. Best pepper grinder I've ever owned and highly recommend. My much more expensive Peugeot just sits on the counter looking pretty now and I rarely use it.
Bon Appetit Magazine Going Totally Downhill
As a long time subscriber, I just received my October 2011 issue of Bon Appetit yesterday. It's been going downhill for awhile, but I was shocked to see the number of advertisements in this issue - most not even food related - it was quite shocking. A little BA content on the left page and then ads on the right page in almost the entire issue! What BA content that was there was totally boring and I was done with it in 10 minutes or so. My subscription was just renewed as a gift, but if this keeps up I will not be renewing it again! Has anyone else noted that it looks more like GQ magazine now that a food magazine. Food & Wine and Fine Cooking are far superior!
Where can I find a cheap pasta maker in Vancouver/Richmond :) ! price range of 15-20$
Pay a little more and get an Atlas from Italy. I think they are around $50 at Bosa Foods and much better than the ones you will find at London Drugs, etc.

Guy Fieri in Vancouver - I'm sure you've all heard! [moved from BC]
It does pretty much suck - overpriced and I swear their hashbrowns are the frozen variety. Just another old restaurant with all the hype but when you go there it's rather a disappointment.
Go Fish News
I've eaten at the Fisherman's Wharf location 4 or 5 times since it opened and have always thought the place is totally overrated and don't get the line ups!
The Ringside
Went there around this time last year on a road trip from Vancouver, B.C. - they were in a temporary space while the original restaurant was being renovated. One of the best steaks I've ever had and the onion rings alone are worth a trip back - amazingly good. Will be going the next time I'm in Portland.
SUNSHINE COAST
Visiting the Sunshine Coast in the next few weeks. Any recommendations where to go for good food for both lunch and dinner?
I think I just got ripped off!
This is not the first time I have heard of this happening at that store. Best way is to take the crabs home alive and clean them yourself. Very easy.
Your favorite Le Creuset color
My blue round french oven pitted and had opaque round spots on the lid after about 7 years - they replaced it with a new one, no questions asked, but that was a few years ago. I treated the pot very well and they just suddenly appeared for some reason. I've since moved to the red colour with no discoloration problems.
Do you think its worth joining Costco in Vancouver?
Yes, the price for their beef is good and the beef is good quality - triple A and you sometimes can find Prime. Their butchering is not as pretty as you would get at a good butcher shop, but for the savings I get I don't mind and you can buy a whole filet or strip loin and cut the steaks yourself. Their roasts are really good too. Very good prices on pork as well - their back ribs are great!
GREATEST STEAK IN VEGAS
Going to Vegas with a group in early June and they really want to go out for an amazing steak dinner. Can anyone recommend a good place to go? I'm thinking Craft Steak, but if there is something else that you can recommend, please let me know.
Thanks all.
QUESTION RE FOOD SPOILING
Hi. Bought some very fresh Spanish breakfast sausage today - left them in the car and then in my unheated living room - didn't get them in the fridge for 3 hours. Not hot out today - maybe 10 C or 50 F.
Can I still eat them or should I toss them? They were still a little cool to the touch in the bag. I'm leaning towards eating them, but just want some other possibly more knowledgeable opinions.
Thanks.
GOOD PLACE TO EAT [Vancouver to Lynnwood]
Thanks for the tips. I am traveling from Vancouver to Lynwood, Lynwood for the mall, not for the food - LOL.
GOOD PLACE TO EAT [Vancouver to Lynnwood]
Heading down to Washington State as far as Lynnwood on Friday for a day trip and wondering is anyone can recommend a good place to eat lunch and/or dinner. Looking for something besides the usual Bobs Burgers, etc. Don't mind driving off the beaten path a little. Thanks.
Looking For Great Onion Rings in Seattle Area
It's a bit of a drive but the best onion rings I've ever had are at the Ringside in Portland.
taking the plunge into le creuset
I would go with the bigger size 7.25 quart round. I have a 5 quart Staub and find it just a wee bit too small for many recipes. Love them both, but use the larger one more often.
Is Le Creuet worth the price?
Your really can't compare LC and Staub to the cheap Chinese knock offs. I agree totally with Jay's post. I'd rather pay a little more for quality cookware that will more than likely pass on to my grandchildren that buy something cheap that i'll have to replace out of my pocket in a few years. The old adage - you get what you pay for and LC and Staub are definitley worth the money especially when you pay the outlet price.
Le Creuset- Your most used size?
I have two of the small gratin pans (#28) which I purchased because the outlet store was out of the larger ones - glad I got these two as they have been discontinued. They make the most fabulous gratins and scalloped potatoes and are the perfect size for 2 - 3 people. The larger roaster is great for a crowd, but I use the smaller ones all the time.
Le Creuset- Your most used size?
Yes, excellent for roasting veggies, etc, making gratins, lasagna, etc.
Le Creuset- Your most used size?
The large cast iron roasting pan or the gratin pans are great. Use mine all the time!
"Budget" knife recommendation needed for holiday gift
Victorinox all the way. I have several Japanese knives but go to this one often as you don't have to treat it with kid gloves about cutting certain things without damaging it. I actually would take one of these over Henckels - had one years ago and vowed I'd never buy another.
6-qt Kirkland dutch oven - $50
Gave one to friends last year for Christmas - they love it and use it constantly. However just recently they've noticed a tiny chip. You get what you pay for but I still think it's a good deal.
SOUP STOCK QUESTION
i just made a big pot of turkey stock and topped it up with a couple of bags of frozen chicken stock I had on hand to make my soup. I'm wanting to freeze some of this soup, but am wondering if I can do so as the two bags of stock were previously frozen before. It's mixed in with the huge amount of new stock, so I'm hoping there won't be a problem freezing the new soup. Does anyone happen to know if this is a problem, or am I safe to freeze the new soup with the previously frozen chicken stock mixed in with it?
Thanks.
First time in Vegas. My line-up and need some recs
B&B restaurant. One of the best meals I've ever had.
Le Creuset enameled finish ruined!
Same thing happened to me last year - they said it was misuse so they wouldn't replace it - gave me a new one at a discounted price, but it was still pretty expensive - probably could have bought a new one cheaper at the LC outlet store. I think the days of replacing the pots with no questions asked are long gone unless it's something that is actually defective with the pot. They did replace a 10 year old plus DO that suddenly started getting opaque spots on the enamel on the lid a few years back, but they are getting more strict when the damage is heat related.
What to look for in a good roasting pan
I have the Calphalon try ply that they recommend on Cook's Illustrated - works really well in the oven and on the stove top and is cheaper than the AC version that apparently warps on the stove top. Very large though.
LAKE CHELAN DINING
I will be in the area for a few days around September 11th. Can anyone recommend a decent place to dine out for dinner? I know it's probably pretty limited, but there must be something that is good in the area. Thanks.
GREAT RESTAURANT FOR BIRTHDAY
I will be in the Seattle area in early September celebrating my 50th birthday. Any recommendations on a good place to eat - one of Tom Douglas's restaurants perhaps? I pretty much like everything - doesn't have to be totally fine dining, just very good.
Thanks.
Cascade Loop Road Trip (North Cascades/Methow/Lake Chelan/Wenatchee)
When in Chelan I enjoy eating at Lake Chelan Winery. They have a BBQ in the vineyard and their ribs are great with one of their wines - the Cabernet Sauvignon is always good.
