Skirt steak

long wait, not good. (I'd like to blame the kids but I'm the problem:) . As for Mexican, Living in Arizona, I get my fill. I have fond memories of having grilled skirt stake at my aunts house when she lived in chicago. I'm glad you agreed on Blue Grass, cause that's what we're going to try.

Skirt steak

I like the looks of the menu. the beet salad and mushroom broil look good. we have a reservation here for thursday. thanks

Skirt steak

I'll be in the area next weekend, mostly northern burbs- Northbrook area, but will have car (and family with me). I'm looking for a place for Skirt steak. nothing too upscale due to the kids. any thoughts.

also, any thoughts on Francesco's Hole In the Wall, looks like a good place for a bite.

Another Market question

Do ya think they'll still be running June 20th? I thought more end of may, first week or 2 of June?

I was on a cruise about 12 years ago, there was a chef from Seattle (don't remember his name) who gave a cooking demo on cedar plank Salmon. He discussed Copper River Salmon. I was hooked ever since.

Boy I hope we can get some.

Another Market question

Good thing we're early risers. Plan is Thursday morning probably between 8-9. coffee and pastries will do the trick.

thanks for the DeLorenti tip. I love Italy and all things Italian. May have to pack some Barolos for the trip:)

Another Market question

Now I'm really excited. I'm on a Junami hunt! although, maybe I'll have a Kiku with my Kiwi? they both actually sound good.

Another Market question

OMG, I'm so embarrassed. I'm trying so hard to learn the lingo. Of course I know it's PLACE, but was concentrating on loosing the "S". ya win some, ya loose some.

Another Market question

Sorry Paul, I was trying to be hip and cool by calling Pike Peak Market, "the Market". but yes, that's what I mean. I will be driving in. We are going there whether I buy stuff or not.

I'll be with in a mile of the one on 155th/Aurora)

Another Market question

Howard,
thanks.
Since I don't eat shell fish, will have to concentrate more on Pure. (I think the family would be disappointed if we didn't get some fish from Pike Peak Market).
Forest mushrooms--ohhhhh (sorry, just day dreeming)
Can one tell the difference between "high" and "low" stalls by sight or is it a knowledge thing?

Another Market question

Hi,
I’ve reviewed past threads, but I can’t seem to find any recent ones. I’m going to be staying in Seattle, but unlike the last few times I’m very excited because I’ll be renting a house so I’ll be able to cook. I figure I can take advantage of the Market- dreaming about getting fresh fish and produce. We’ll be there at end of June. My plan is to go to the market early the first morning we are there (a Thursday). Or would Friday be better?
Here is what I’ve gleaned. Please correct or update if needed.
For fish I should go to either Jacks or Pure Food Fish.
For Produce Frank and Sosios seem to be the place. Then the Low stall v high stalls. Now is this literal? Do I just pick food from lower bins or is this nomenclature for something else? An area maybe?
I think there is a store called Central market near where we are staying that’s suppose to be interesting.
Thank for any advice.

Best place in Napa valley for lamb.

I've seen it with lamb, but that's why I wrote type, to signify the style. Anyway, how about grilled lamb chops?

Best place in Napa valley for lamb.

I'm talking grilled or rack- (not stewed osso buco type). Who has the best?

Laguna Beach sushi?

There are a lot of places to save money, but good food is not one of them ;)

Laguna Beach sushi?

By family friendly, do you mean they have food the kids would eat? or only they wouldn't get the evil eye?

napa alone for diner, where to go?

I'll be in napa overnight alone. No time for wine tasting, but will need to eat dinner. I'm a vegetarian who eats fish. I was thinking of either finding a good wineshop that doesn't gauge (I'm on a lot of mailing lists ) and grabbing a pizza or something for the room, or a casual restaurant with a good wine list. I tried Oxbow on my last trip, but did love it.

any suggestions?

thanks

Laguna Beach sushi?

OCshooter,
Funny, we don't do shellfish either. (or a lot of rolls)

Laguna Beach sushi?

we have had a summer vacation in LA (Rancho Palos Verdes) for 10 years. Each year we look forward to an evening at Sushi Zo. (well worth the drive.) This year we find ourselves in Laguna, without the babysitter. so are there any good local sushi places? (are there any a little farther, worth ditching the kids for?)

Best chocolate dessert?

Hi,
For my wife's birthday we are going to do her favorite thing: go out for just appetizers and dessert. She loves rich dark chocolate, so where should we go for the best chocolate dessert. (we can drive anywhere in the valley).

Preferred Restaurants of Scottsdale & Phoenix

Great.thanks for the info.

I didn't see date and time restrictions (but did expect them). how restrictive are they?

Preferred Restaurants of Scottsdale & Phoenix

I just got an offer for a card from "Preferred Restaurants of Scottsdale & Phoenix". The deal is for $49 you get a card that entitles you to one free entrée if another is bought at certain restaurants for a year. the restaurants listed are not bad: Bourbon steak, Deseo, Estate house, TPC grill, J & G, Lon's, Prado, T cooks...
If true, seems like a no brainier.
Has anyone heard of this, or is it a scam?

thanks,

NOCA (phx) opening this week

Circa was wonderful.

I wish the BYOB laws were different. Here's hoping for a good and reasonably priced wine list. I frequent restaurants as much for the wine as I do the food. (well, almost)

NOCA (phx) opening this week

FYI- I wanted to go this week and Elliot called me back to say they are not going to be open untill next week. I'll be out of town, so they'll have to work the bugs out on someone else.

Best selection of Arizona Wines in Phoenix

I think hands down the best arizona wines are from Dos Cabezas! Backstreet has some and I believe I've seen them at Whole Foods.

Kosher sushi list ?

Kosher Critic, That's Great!! thank you.

Kosher sushi list ?

Thanks Mrfood. That is a very compleate list. I was hoping for a more compact version. One that I could actually hand to the chef.

I got the idea from a recent trip to France. I found a one page list that listed kosher fish with the french translation. We carried it with us everywhere. without it I would have eaten only veggies.

Kosher sushi list ?

I eat at Non-Kosher sushi places but pick only kosher fish. I'd like to be able to order a Omakase and give them a list of acceptable fish. Does anyone have one or a web site that might have a printable list?

Paris review (some Provence)

Here is my informal review of some of my dinning experiences in France: (a small disclaimer- we don’t eat many of the foods you may like: no shell fish, no Pork, very little meat. I will also apologize now for both my spelling and my lack of culinary terminology)

Paris:
Juveniles- a wonderful little wine shop with about 8 tables. Tim Johnson who runs the place is a hoot. (a Scott who has worked all over the world in the wine industry). His store has many relative unknown wines that are in expensive and very, very good. Due to the setting I was not expecting much in the way of food, boy was I wrong. It was fabulous. We had Eggplant puree on toast and Salad with chavie cheese for lunch. Along with some wine :) Highly recommended.
2006 Alain Graillot Syrah Tandem Domaine Ouled Thaleb - Morocco, Ouled (6/7/2008)
cherry pie, blueberry earth. great balance, good acidity, bright fruit- cherry, black pepper, spicy finish. (92 pts.)

Aux Fins Gourmets- nice little atmospheric place. I’m not sure if they didn’t like our French, or if because we didn’t have reservations, we were placed in the back room by our selves. I actually liked it. I feel uncomfortable eating right on top of my neighbors. We started with a tomato salad with were beautifully ripen tomatoes with a nice mustard vinaigrette. I next had Scorpion fish with root vegetables cooked and served in an iron pot. This had terrific flavor and may have been the best thing I ate the entire trip. We had an apple tart (very good) and a cherry cake with sorbet (not so good).
Highly recommended.
2006 Yann Chave Crozes-Hermitage - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage (6/8/2008) earthy, tobacco, blackberry. good balance, good acidity, some complexity, medium finish. very nice wine. (93 pts.)

Les Fables de la Fontaine- we very much looking forward to this lunch. We arrive and asked to sit outside and were bluntly put down, and then stuffed into our spot in the sardine can they call a dinning room. After an extremely long wait, even in Paris, we were finally recognized, and the calk board which hold the cart moved for us to see. Luckily thing improved greatly from here. A creamy sweet pepper amuse bouche–fair, a gazpacho that was incredible, a tuna tar tare that was very creative and very good. Cod that was a little too fried. Dessert was a tiramisu and strawberries. Both of which were very good.
highly recommended.
2005 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Mule Blanche - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage (6/8/2008)
Lemon, anise, mineral nose. minerality, good acid, medium body. nice finish (90 pts.)

L'As du Falafel – we enjoyed this very much, more due to the area, than the actual falafel. I thought the Falafel was very good, but probably not worth traveling for.

Il Vino- Although there have been mixed reviews of this place, being the cork dork that I am, the thought of ordering wine and having to food mad to pair was irresistible. It was made even more so which an exchange of emails establishing that they not only could do a vegetarian menu, but when I challenged them to match it with big, bold reds, the reply is they accept the challenge and will impress me. WOW, I thought. I was looking more forward to this than any other place. So I arrive in a jacket (no tie) only to find more jeans than Jackets. We are sat, champagne brought. So far so good. The head front person (?sommelier) came to speak to us and explain the menu.
They have bottle you can order, or three menus: a blind tasting with four wines for 95E, the days menu for 195E or the 2000 E one paired with superstars like Petrus and d'Yquem. We chose the blind tasting because I did love the wines included in the 195 menu. When he asked us if we had any dietary limitation, we told him. I also expressed my preference for bold whites. He looked down his nose and very condescendingly said, but that would be good. I hesitantly tried to explain my e- mails and he said something about both people having to have the same wines. Finally, he reluctantly gave in. (Let me add a side note. First, I understand wine pairings. I’m not a novice, but the wines I like and the foods I like don’t match. I deal with this when I plan dinner parties, so I though it would be fun to see what professionals do with my dilemma. I also tend to be shy, and not speak up. Which if not for the e mails, I certainly would not have.)
So our meal- Cream of zucchini soup- wonderful, dried sweet chili- interesting, Asparagus risotto- very good, Sea bass with celery mousse fair, Tiramisu- good.
The wines were good- not great. (My wife and I got the same wine except for a burgundy I got instead of a chardonnay.)
I would not go back, beside the above issues I didn’t think the food was worth the price.

Les Florets near Gigondas- we were very happy to find this place, and have been served lunch even without reservations. The patio area is fabulous, but it was raining, so we ate inside. A nice country decor. Amuse bouche- soft cheese- not very good. Smoked salmon mousse with cream- incredibly rich and tasty. Eggplant tourrine with sun dried tomatoes and tomato sorbet- great mix –hot/cold, savory/salt/sweet. Great. Sea bass- very good, chocolate mint bowl with white chocolate mousse and dark chocolate, cannelloni with Chantilly cream fruit and raspberry sorbet.very good.
Very Highly recommended.
2005 Domaine la Roubine Gigondas - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas (6/15/2008)
earty dark fruit nose. big full bodied mouth, tons of fruit. very tight (my be my favorite Gigondas at this point) but thins out on mid palate and never recovers on finish. no change through entire bottle. (89 pts.)

La Mirande in Avignon (chef Jean-Claude Aubertin)- had a chef’s table tasting. 11 of us in the kitchen with jaen-Claude cooking for us. We were told a vegetarian meal is no problem. We had a great time, but our meal was simply everyone else’s without the meat/shellfish. So when they got a huge prawn on a bed of rice, we got rice. When they got a pork chop with roasted anthem chili, we got the chili. Ya win some, ya look some.

Fine Dining In Glendale?

I agree with there being no "fine dining" in glendale. even good dining is hard to come by. Skye was advertized as such but I found it dissapointing (but in all fairness I'm not a steak guy).

I do like North for a nice meal.

Has anyone been to Hammerheads Ocean Grill
6718 W. Deer Valley Rd.?

Les Restaurants de Constant

not to steal the thread but I am going to Fables for lunch. I am assuming no jacket is required for that. True?
