Summer in Niantic

I'm looking for good, affordable, casual dining in the Niantic area for summertime visits to the beach. We're stuck in a rut with breakfast at the Shack, dinner at Dad's, and ice cream at Dad's or Hallmark. Last summer we ventured into New London with some success, and I'm wondering what else we've been missing within Niantic/East Lyme itself, or within a 15 minute drive?

Must Eats - West Hartford, CT - 24-Hour Stay

I third Monte Alban. Stuffed Pancakes at Mo's Midtown (Farmington Ave., Hartford) are awesome too.

Chinese Mirch - Stamford

Anyone know if they have a lunch menu? Takeout?

Reasonably priced farms or CSAs in NY/CT?

All of the traditional CSAs in Connecticut that I know of are produce-only. You pay an up-front fee and then get a weekly share of produce as determined by the farm. In Stamford, you have two options-- Stoneledge Farm, which delivers on Wednesday to a church near downtown, and Gazy Brothers, which might deliver to your home (you'll have to check with them). I believe both are stll taking sign-ups for full seasons or part seasons.
For meats, the best option would be to order from CT Farm Fresh Express, a weekly delivery service out of Haddam that posts a new menu each week for customers to order from, builds up a week's worth of orders, and then spends one day each week delivering from farms to homes. Because they pull products from many farms they have a large variety of meats, dairy, and produce. Their website is www.ctffe.com. I believe the delivery charge to Stamford is $15, which is pretty reasonable if you are buying meats only every few weeks.

Hey MA, why all the fast food?

USDA just released a new mapping feature that illustrates regional eating habits, costs, local farming, etc.

Why do you think Massachusetts stands out so much from the rest of the northeast as a consumer of Fast Food?

Explanatory post at http://www.ediblegeography.com/united-states-of-food/

and the USDA site is at http://maps.ers.usda.gov/FoodAtlas/ . Warning- very glitchy unless using IE.

Stamford lunch places

Funny I've had good experience with Precious. I can't vouch for authenticity, but as someone who finds most prepared foods WAY too salty I could actually eat food from Precious and not swell up.

Navaratna, Indian vegetarian restaurant in Stamford

I ordered the lunchbox the other day. For $6.50, it is a great deal. Due to a language barrier and lack of menu clarity I'm still not sure if the lunch box allows you to choose the rice, dessert, etc. specifically, but it seems to consist of your choice of entree, and the daily special for rice, lentils, chapati, and dessert. The day I got it the dessert was a sweet rice pudding and the "chapati" was like a healthier version of naan. Overall it was a lot of food and sat well in the stomach, but the appetizer wasn't super tasty. I'll be trying it again.

Navaratna, Indian vegetarian restaurant in Stamford

Strange the menu they gave me yesterday had lunch boxes for $6.50, but no word of what the lunch box options are. Yours had lunch boxes at $7.

Where are Asian grocery stores near Stamford, CT?

I love you Chowhound! Today while driving near the South Norwalk train station I thought I saw an Asian grocery store (the strip mall on Washington Street). Does anyone know if it's good?

Jfood hits Coalhouse Pizza (Stamford) - Very good pie, great potential

Coalhouse Pizza is so thin that it cools down too quickly. The 2nd and 3rd pieces get progressively less satisfying.

Coalhouse Pizza - Stamford

Their menu and temporary website is up at coalhousepizza.com.
I'm pleased to see lip service given to quality ingredients: nitrate-free sausage, and whole wheat dough upon request.

Coalhouse Pizza - Stamford

LBC ran a review today. Sounds promising!

Also the managers have a Facebook site and the "culinary team" is affiliated with Mona Lisa in downtown Stamford. The landlord is the same for both restaurants, but I don't think he runs the actual restaurants.

Where can I buy venison in the Stamford area?

I've heard that there has been an expansion of deer hunting in FFC/WC. So, there must be a way to get ,my hands on some locally-grown venison. Any suggestions?

Coalhouse Pizza - Stamford

I like the new sign, it's modern and edgy. The interior looks attractive as well, but what matters is the pizza, so we'll see.

Best ice cream in CT

I've eaten at a lot of CT ice creams and Collins Creamery in Enfield gets my vote.
Dr. Mike's is also worth a trip. There's another place near Dr. Mike's too but I'm blanking on the specifics. For full sundaes, A.C. Petersen's in West Hartford is worth a stop, and Mortensen's if you are on the Berlin Turnpike. Rich Farm is not worth the hassle.

Goji Organic - Stamford

Tey should be opening soon (any info?) because a couple of weeks ago they had all the furnishings installed and just needed the inventory. Then they put paper on the windows so I can't tell their progress since, but I'm looking forward to the opening.

Bulls Head Market - Norwalk, CT

The Bull's Head location on Summer is a tiny place with pre-made sandwiches.

Is it true that Fairway is opening in Stamford?

An article in the Advocate this week stated that the builders will finish the shell in February 2010 and then Fairway will start the interior fitout, with an opening date "a year" from now. That construction schedule seems overly slow.
