Wasabi in North Branford, CT (SUSHI)

If your a sushi lover, stop by on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. They offer half-price sushi on a lot of rolls. We go every Wed. and pay $155 for a bill that should be $238 with 5-7 people (including drinks, appetizers, other dinners). I am not a sushi fan so I typically go for the Chicken Katsu, two chicken cutlets lightly battered and friend with a type of asian barbecue sauce and a bowl of white rice and asian salad (ginger dressing).

They serve everyone Miso soup (with the Tofu), I'm not a big fan. The drink selection is pretty good with lots of asian beers, saki, wines, etc. I would suggest getting there early or calling ahead for a reservation as it does get really busy.

The restaurant used to do the 1/2 price on Wednesday only when it was under different ownership and was really good then. I would get the Teriyaki, but then it re-opened under new owners and we tried it and were disappointed. We went back a few weeks later and were amazed at how much better it had gotten. Different chefs or supplier of food I would think. Either way the menu also changed with more Thai and Korean dishes offered.

The Beef Kushiyaki appetizer is delicous and worthwhile, it is on skewers, flattened with a sort of Teriyaki glaze. The sushi always gets devoured by my tablemates as they love their Shrimp Tempura, Krazy Roll, NY Roll, etc. Get yourself some Eel sauce (no real eel in it). And if you order a dinner, put some soy sauce in a dish and mix in some wasabi from the sushi, nice and spicy, mmmmm.

Again I would highly recommend this place for a stop over. It is located right on the corner of Route 80 and 139 in North Branford next to Dairy Queen. It's a small place but what a treat on Wednesdays.

Tengda Milford- BIG Disappointment!

I'm sorry but I must disagree wholeheartedly. While I can vouch that sitting in the back on the raised stage-like section can be slightly loud during busy dinner times. You may have gone later at night when a DJ was there. I went this time at about 7pm and no such music was being played.

I will give my experiences so far as I have been there 3 times and am returning tonight with my gf for date night to try the Hibachi.

When we heard about the opening in Miford, my father was excited and told us how good the Westport one was. So we went to try, walking in we were immediately greeted by friendly hostesses, waited a very short time for a table and were sat politely (menus handed out). The atmosphere is almost New York syle with copper/satin silver coloring throughout. Very trendy and modern looking instead of the traditional cheesy chinese restaurant atmospheres with panda and bamboo wallpaper. I would compare it to Kudeta in New Haven for syling.

The bar is just as modern with high black stools and plenty of room for comfort at the bar. The backing of the bar has a blue softglow light that I believe changes color and is appealing to the eyes. The bar is never dull. It is separated from the restaurant with a partition.

The Hibachi sits off to the right and away from the dining, when it's full you can hear the laughter and sounds and it is enticing, as we are going tonight. It is hard to believe such a nice place is in a strip mall, but remember this is a higher end strip mall with stores like Jos. A. Bank, White House, Black Market, Whole Foods, etc. No Wal-Mart or Arby's next door. Sitting outside is not recommended as there is not a lot of scenery other than a parking lot and stores. You are still on the Post Road in Milford keep in mind.

The drinks are never a disappointment, each time we are served promptly and do not have to wait long for service. The espresso martini is delicious, as are the cosmos (so my mother tells me).

My gf loves sushi and was amazed at the size of the rolls. They are big compared with typical rolls so take note when you are ordering. I ordered the Peppercorn chicken, if you like spicy, go for it. I love it, it's got heat, flavor, and is perfectly cooked. Appetizers and entrees all come out at appropriate times, they do not rush you. On a side note, get the Boneless Spare Ribs, the sauce is amazing and they come with little cubed sweet potatoes that have a grill/sear texture, again delicious.

As I said I have been there 3 times and it is one of our favorites next to Kudeta and Wasabi (North Branford). I'll write up something about that restaurant soon. We are returning tonight for Hibachi, can't wait!
