Upscale in Virginia Beach
When I think of upscale in Virginia Beach, I think of Steinhilber's, but I think they focus on seafood. There is a Ruth's Cris Steak House at town center in Virginia Beach. There is a Shula's Steak House and Kincaid's chop house in downtown Norfolk.
Recommendations for Good Seafood in Norfolk VA?
On the fine dining end, it would have to be Steinhilber's. Very established in Va Beach.
On the low end, it would be Margie & Rays on the way to Sandbridge in Va Beach. It's an "old school" fried seafood joint, but you won't be disappointed. The "Hurricane Margie" will feed 3 to 4 people easily.
In the middle is the Surfrider, Tautog's, Lucky Oyster, Croakers, & Charlies. All would be good in this price range.
Lobster roll in Virginia Beach
Lobster isn't caught anywhere near this part of the Atlantic. You'll find Lobster Rolls pretty much in the New England states. Sorry; they are awesome.
Margie and Rays on the way to Sandbridge is an "old school" reasonable seafood place that's been around for many years. Mostly fried stuff. They have a dish called the Hurricane Margie that will easily feed four people.
Tautog's will be a bit more money, but very local at the beach.
The Lucky Oyster or the Surfrider would be good choices as well.
Quick lunch not far from 95 near Richmond
Ok. This might be a little out of the way, but not too much. If you get to Petersburg on I-95 just south of Richmond, you can pick up Rt. 460 east. Go about 8 - 10 miles to Waverly, VA. There is a BBQ place called Cowlings BBQ on Rt. 460 that is very good. From Waverly, you can take Rt. 40 back over to I-95. Mapquest it; it really isn't too far out of the way. Their BBQ is smoked on location, and we love it.
Spices in Tidewater
I've been trying Penzys spices online. They've been pretty good. They have decent spice mixes and blends as well. I've been making my own breakfast sausage and Brats with their mix, and its good.
Norfolk VA Attucks theatre neighborhood.
Are you staying in a hotel in downtown Norfolk? A cab should be easy to get; you may want to get the phone numbers of a few cab companies from the internet in case you have to call for a cab. The theatre is near downtown, and Granby Street is the main road downtown.
At McArthur Mall, there is Kincaid's Chop House. They are very good, and have a huge menu which will accomodate many different tastes. If you're into Greek food, the Orapax Inn isn't too far out of downtown. Granby Street is one block over from McArthur Mall, and is pretty much the restaurant district. I'd suggest walking along there for a few blocks, and see what is interesting to you. They are all fairly close together.
Norfolk VA Attucks theatre neighborhood.
Nice theatre that has been refurbished, but not a great part of Norfolk to be hanging out. There are good choices nearby in the downtown area near McArthur Mall and along Granby street. That's kind of the restaurant district in downtown Norfolk.
Chow near The Homestead Resort / Hot Springs, Virginia
Your best bet would probably go into either Lexington or Staunton. Lexington is a three-college town, and will several places to choose from in the downtown area. Staunton also has a nice quaint downtown area with a small restaurant district. The Blackfriars Theatre is also in Staunton. Very good replica of Shakepear's theatre with plays most nights. A good outing would be to do dinner and a play in Staunton !
Tidewater Christmas
Ok, so I asked some of my Jewish friends where they would go out to eat on Christmas Day. The overwhelming reply was:
The Route 58 Delicatessen
4000 Virginia Beach Blvd.
Suite 156
Virginia Beach, VA 23452
It is supposed to be a very authentic NY Deli, and I'm told they are packed on Christmas Day. Their web site is. www.58deli.com

jonandkate,
There's always room except when I eat too much :) Hey, either e-mail Kris at her address in her reply to MrBigTime, or send an e-mail to me at: titan76@cox.net. Put your chow name in the subject line.

Hampton Roads Chow Dinner Group
Hey Janet,
I noticed a lot of the same people posting around here, and started replying to their posts about starting up a dinner group. You can also put out a posting like Kris has above. We meet once a month, and try different places that members suggest. It gives us an opportunity to try something or some place new that we might not try on our own. Give it a try, or join us sometime.

Virginia BEach restaurants
1. If you want more upscale, then Steinhilbers is the place. It is the old established place to go in Va Beach. Waiters in white jackets, etc.
2. The Boardwok is near the Dam Neck area. It is one of my favorite places. It is a fusion of Chinses, Polynesian, and American food. Everything is very fresh, and reasonably priced. Best hot & sour soup I've had.
3. Margie and Rays is also fairly close. Probably not a gift certificate kind of place. Very old southern style mostly fried seafood shack. The Hurricane Margie is a plate of food for around 35.00 that will feed four people.

Rt. 58 and Rt. 11 in Virginia
Jess' Quick Lunch at the original location on the square in downtown Harrisonburg. Sit at the counter. Great dogs, burgers, & fries. Atmosphere like a 50's diner. Awesome.
If you go to Abbington, make sure you go to a play at the Barter Theatre.
Williamsburg, VA - restaurant suggestions
Well, if you are visiting Williamsburg, you might want to try one of the restored colonial taverns. You'll get mixed reviews on the taverns, but where else can you eat in a tavern that was around during the Revolutionary War? It is worth a try once just to say you did it.
My wife and I like the Greene Leaf Inn . It's a pub style restaurant near William and Mary College. Good beers on tap with sizable pitchers available. Mostly sandwich fare, but good.
Good quick eats off 81 in Virginia?
If you get as far as Harrisonburg, VA (about 24 miles past Staunton going north on I-81) there is Jess' Quick Lunch. The downtown location is the original and still the best, but they also have a location heading east on Rt. 33 near I-81. The downtown location on the square will have the better atmosphere, but is about 3 miles off of I-81 heading west on Rt. 33. Great dogs, burgers, fries, etc., and right out of the old SNL skit of cheeburger, chip, petsi! Sit at the counter.
Road Trip on I-64, Richmond to Newport News
Ok. Here's your spot ! The County Grill and Smokehouse at:
1215 George Washington Memorial Highway
Suite A
Yorktown, VA 23693
It is not far off of I-64 in the Newport News area. (It is officially listed as a Yorktown address, but it is close to I-64.) Our local chowhound foodie group made this one of our outings, and it is better than Pierces BBQ. You can google it, and mapquest the address above.

Driving from Wash DC to WIlliamsburg, VA and then back to NY
My kids always liked the College Deli near William and Mary College and the restored area of Colonial Williamsburg. Interesting subs / sandwiches and kid friendly.
Across the street from the College Deli is the Greene Leafe Inn. A little more of an adult atmosphere than the College Deli, but still very good sandwiches, and a good selection of beer on tap.
Pierces BBQ gets mixed reviews these days as it has grown into a more commercial place than it once was.
Another choice that you can make that will have a mixed reviews is to eat in one of the restored colonial taverns. It is one of the few places where you can experience a dinner or lunch as the colonists did. It can be pricey, but then again, how many times will you be in Colonial Williamsburg for this type of experience?
Visiting Greeley, CO
I'll be visiting Greeley, CO for three days next week, and need some recommendations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I won't be going out for any big occasions, just looking for favorite local places that are in the reasonable price range. Things to do and visit are welcome as well. Thanks.
Best farmers markets in the mid-atlantic region?
Here's a couple that you can try.
In Virginia Beach, there's a farmer's market at the corner of Princess Anne Rd. and Dam Neck Rd. It's been there for a long time, and is fairly large with many different little shops. Go on a Friday night during the warmer months, and you'll be in for a musical treat. In the parking lot, many groups of musicians form impromptu groups. Most play bluegrass or country music, but it is fun just to walk around and listen to the music while shopping at the markets..
When I lived in Waynesboro, VA in 2008, there was a farmer's market that formed once a week downtown. It was not a typical farmer's market in what was offered, but it was genuine. They had organic meats, honey, flowers, etc. Nearby close to the Krogers, there was a produce market with fresh fruits and vegitables. I don't know if they still do all of this, but it's worth you investigating it online.
Dinner Rec for Lexingon, VA area
Staunton is also about 35 miles from Lexington, but if you're going there, then there are several reasonable places along Beverly street as well as The Staunton Grocery.
In Lexington, you'll find a lot of quaint little restaurants downtown near VMI. There are three colleges in Lexibgton, so you should not have too much trouble finding a place.

Best Pizza in Hampton Roads
Hey Kris,
The people out here really like Chesapeake Pizza on Battlefield Blvd. in Great Bridge. It's been there for many years. It's almost as good as my own!

Pig Roast in Harpers Ferry/Charlestown Area?
I know that there is a guy out of Charlottesville that does a pig roast every year for a friend of mine that lives in Winchester. Harpers Ferry isn't too far from Winchester. You might try caterers, event, & BBQ ads in the C-ville yellow pages
I haven't had southern/bbq or real mexican/salvadoran in over 10 years! Can you help??
The ethnic foods that you mentioned are probably much more available in the DC area. However, it doesn't look like you are going far enough south to get that southern food experience.
Just past Petersburg, VA on Rt. 460 there will be a couple of choices, but again you'll be going a bit further south than Bowling Green. Just south of Waverly, VA on Rt. 460 is Cowlings BBQ. Awesome southern NC style BBQ. About 8 to 10 miles further down Rt. 460 in Wakefield, VA is the Virginia Diner. It is a famous old Virginia style diner that has been around for a long time. If you feel like a short road trip, they are worth the drive.

Zynodoa or Brix Wine Bar in Staunton Va?
The Shakespeare Theatre is a must do. It is awesome, and they usually rotate five different plays. Sometimes you can catch a free dress rehearsal show.
There are several decent places to eat in downtown Staunton along Beverley street. With a short 4 - 5 block walk, you can check out all of the eateries, and then choose one. Everything is pretty close by. The Staunton Grocery is an upscale restaurant that has received good press statewide, but pricey.

Restaurants in the Franklin, Virginia area?
On the map, it looks like there are several options for you to get to Wakefield, VA on Rt. 460. It would be a little bit of a drive, but not too far. In Wakefield, there is the Virginia Diner which is famous for old Virginia southern style food. A few miles past Wakefield on Rt. 460 is the town of Waverly. Cowlings BBQ is on the right just before Waverly, and has very good BBQ. Again, a small trip for good food.

Looking for the best Chilidog
In Norfolk, there's Danny's Hot Dogs on the corner of Kempsville Rd. and Va. Beach Blvd. It's been there a long time.
Where to eat in Harrisonburg, Va.
Jess' Quick Lunch at the downtown location in Harrisonburg, VA. Sit at the counter for the full ambiance. Great chili dogs and hand made burgers. Fries are pretty good as well, and their coffee is HOT. We loved this place many years ago when I went to JMU. It's not fancy, but it is like a local "must do" when in Harrisonburg.
