40th bday dinner/all guys weekend in Toronto, suggested alternatives to steak houses?

I will try to scope the interest in a place like Nota Bene or something like that, other than a steak house like Jacobs or Barberians...

Just to clarify, what did you mean about Beerbis and Crush having "big sort of celebratory feel, but don't try too hard" ... re: don't get too rowdy there? Not sure that will be the case... We will be well behaved :)

IF I recall, though, they close early on Saturday.

40th bday dinner/all guys weekend in Toronto, suggested alternatives to steak houses?

About 10 men are gathering in Toronto in mid-June for a big weekend to celebrate friend's belated 40th. Baseball game will be had, and the plan is for a dinner fit for a 40th. The initial idea was steakhouse but, have to say, prices @ Barberians & Jacobs look quite steep.
Have some questions for Toronto Chows that can help focus things, and perhaps identify better values on the food/wine side:

1) Are Barberians and Jacbos the top 2 choices for steak? Was wondering if Tom Jones is an alternative to the two? Not considering House of Chan due to location. Morton's, maybe, but no to Hys or Ruth Chris.
2) Should the Fifth be thrown in as a "meaty" alternative?
3) Person suggested maybe Crush or Brasaii as they have private rooms/spots for 10 people. Of the 2, which is recommended, and are their wine lists better priced than the habitual steak houses?
4) Other suggestions fit for a 40th dinner with 10 guys, with prices slightly below the normal steakhouse fare for TO? I would suggest mains priced between $26 to $35, with good wine list. (All are employed but don't necessarily want to blow a week of pay on dinner).

Look forward to suggestions.

Pre-theatre choice: Should it be Gallo Nero, Chez Napoleon, Market Cafe, or Pomaire?

Votes and analyses would be welcome, need to make decision quick for Monday. (As an aside, I have reservation already booked for Gallo but cud change based on feedback).

Boston, bachelor party, brunch and pre-Sox grub

Divey around Fenway pre-game is good. Cask N Flagon looks very tempting. Any recommendation about what time we shud head in for drinks, a bite, and just plain old fun?? What about this Who's on First place? Any other preFenway places?

Boston, bachelor party, brunch and pre-Sox grub

Appreciate the reccos.... Our group has dwindled down to 7 or so, but no matter. I will no doubt try a Fenway frank, is that the standard dog they serve at the stadium? Or do they have dog guys outside?

Boston, bachelor party, brunch and pre-Sox grub

Hello folks. A group of 9 are heading to Boston from Canada for weekend of July 24/25 as part of a bachelor party weekend (Groom to be major Sox fan).
We have reservations already for Friday night dinner at Grill 23, and we are staying in Back Bay at the Jurys hotel.
What I am seeking is the following advice:
1. Good Saturday late morning brunch/breakfast to cure 9 good hangovers.
2. Where is best pub food in the Fenway/Kenmore area for pre-game meal on Saturday? What are the ballpark dogs like?
3. What recommended cut of steak does Grill 23 specialize in these days?
Thanks.

Montreal bday dinner with "conservative eating" friends

Advice on place for a memorable belated Bday dinner for 2 couples on a pending weekend trip to Montreal, taking into account that one couple is "more adventurous" than the other. One couple has gone to Bronte, Garcon, Chasse et Peche, Rosalie, Napolean, Il Mulino, whereas the other tends to Italian or Queue de Cheval or Moishe's (re: steak or chicken).
Joe Beef was on my mind but given that the menu changes and written on chalkboard daily, not quite sure. Also, Ferreira was under consideration. Advice would be most welcome, re: great place where more adventurous and more conservative can eat, drink and be merry.

Christmas dinner in Washington??

Thanks to all. Our party of 4 has decided on Corduroy...we tried Blue Duck Tavern but only late reservation was available. Wish us luck, apparently it will have 3-course, $65 prix fixe menu on Christmas day.

Christmas dinner in Washington??

what i meant, Indy67, was would the open table system generally be a reliable source to identify which restos are open on Dec. 25.

Christmas dinner in Washington??

Appreciate the advice, but not sure we will have a car to travel, so would prefer anywhere in DC. As for Open Table search, how reliable is that?

Christmas dinner in Washington??

Folks, am going to be in Washington, DC, for 24th and 25th of December, on business, unable to get home. Any suggestions on where to get meals those evenings? I will assume hotel restos will be open, but if so, which ones should my husband and I target? Is Clydes open, at the very least? Help for the holidays!

Suggestions for Sunday Thanksgiving dinner in Toronto

to ROBGM: staying at Intercontinental, but location is not a problem. Haven't been in Toronto for 4 years. Recently ate a Mistura, Chiado, Romagna Mia and Edward Levesque.... I hear Trevor a nice place but not sure if open on a Sunday night.

Suggestions for Sunday Thanksgiving dinner in Toronto

will be in Toronto with my wife, on business travel, and have to have our "thanksgiving meal" in Toronto on Sunday. What are the recommended Sunday night places open for a romantic meal for 2. Doesn't need to be a place that serves turkey and mash. I would say budget is roughly no more than $25 for the main course. Thanks.

Weekend at Sapori, Erwin, PJ Clarke's & Matou

Thanks for recommendations on the boards. Wanted to report on our 3-night, 4 day weekend in Chicago with the food report. Lemme say Chicago is a food mecca and didn't realize it before heading into the second city for my first visit.

1) Sapori Trattoria, N. Halsted
We sat ouside on patio and enjoyed our main courses — I had the pumpkin-stuffed pasta with burnt squash, she had lobster-filled pasta with rose sauce. Both were tasty. The appetizer was unique, avocado on crostini. It was perhaps Latin-influenced. Cab sav from Tuscany was a bargain too at less than $30. A very good Italian place that would go back to again. 8 out of 10.
2) Erwin, N. Halsted
We went largely because of its solid reputation and, most importantly, a coupon for $25 off. Our salads to start were divine. Main courses, a pickerel and pork chop, were solid. The potatoes au gratin with my pork chop were exception. Desert very good. A good portuguese red for $27 on the wine list helped with dinner. Solid choice. 7.5 out of 10
3) PJ Clarke's, near Magnificient Mile
I had those half-dozen miniburgers, and they were cooked perfectly. Slightly pink with enough juice. Good cut of fries. 7.5 out of 10
4) Cafe Matou, N. Milwaukee
Best meal in Chicago. I had stuff zucchini and a grilled rack of lamb to die for. My wife had green salad plus a mushroom risotto made with pearl barley that was original and tasty. Our server initially forgot our bottle of Cote du Rhone and offered us free dessert — which in my case was a rhubarb ice cream that didn't taste like rhubarb, it was soo good. I struggled about whether to go to Matou or Cafe Absinthe but we think we made the right call. 9 out of 10

My thoughts. thanks to Chowhounders who helped out.

Italian in Near North Side

Be staying at a friend's condo near River, just south of Wacker and west of Lake Shore. Any recommended Italian restos in the vicinity — aka, short cab ride — that are worth trying out next weekend?

3 nights, 4 days in Chicago

Thanks Mitch. Now, can you help me out on Mexican — with the same price range in mind. Is Frontera Grill expensive? What about Adobo Grill? And Dorado? And with Dorado, what is corkage fee on BYOB?

3 nights, 4 days in Chicago

Hello Chow folks. From Ottawa. My wife and I and a another couple heading down to Chicago for a 3-night, 4 day weekend, starting July 19. Staying at a friend's place, near Wrigley Field.
Looking for dinner recommendations, of which one is steak — and we've been told Gibson's and I have read the whole Gibsons v. Mortons debate on this board.
Looking for other dinner recommendations for 2 nights, perhaps one that is reasonable price wise (entrees under $20) and one moderately priced but not so outrageous ($16 to $25 entree prices). One of them could be Italian, but looking for places locals would go to get top notch food.
Good bar at these places is a good thing. Does not necessarily need to be near Wrigley Field, but not in Champagne, either.
One place we've been told about is called Avec, me thinks. But one of the people going is a "picky eater," namely nothing too exotic or outrageous. If there is meat and potatoes on menu, he's likely happy.
I hope this narrows it down... Please advise, email suggestions welcome at paulvieir@gmail.com
