Road trip from Boston to New York, via Rhode Island and Connecticut
why does it concern you how many times they eat in a day and how long they take in between stops? Not a very friendly post to a new community member...............
Road trip from Boston to New York, via Rhode Island and Connecticut
Welcome to chowhound, I don't have any spots to recommend atm, but it sounds like a fun trip. Take your time and make as many spots as your heart may desire! Good luck and remember to pace your eating!!
refused to eat, out of line?
hit the nail on the head - the cooking process had already started and the higher the temp of the food the quicker microbes multiply. This would gross me out as well, specifically when dealing with hamburger meat
refused to eat, out of line?
going out on a bit of a limb here, but I am thinking this was an uncooked dessert? if it had been baked/cooked they wouldnt be raw.....
Mizu Japanese Steakhouse - Warwick, RI
Total hidden gem!
This has very quickly become our go-to spot. The food is great; sushi is fresh and well made, teriyaki is delicious, to date we havent had a dish we didnt like. Drinks are well poured and moderatley priced. Service has been very nice, they know us by name at this point and know what we want. Interior has been completely transformed (location was last a biker bar!) - they mush have spent a TON of $. I had my fiancee's 30th birthday here a month ago and everyone was very impressed with the food and service. The manager Jimmy worked out a special menu for me and they really delivered. They even put up a "Happy Brithday" sign! (spelling mistake intended - I asked them NOT to change it when I noticed it!!).
I really hope this place makes it, Warwick Ave isnt exactly centrally located. Give them a try and I doubt you will be disappointed.

Favorite Paper Towel?
plus those items are a breeding ground for bacteria - to me it defeats the purpose. Kinda hard to clean with a cloth seething with pathogens!
Fogo de Chao - Brazilian BBQ [moved from DC/Balt]
{Fogo de Chão®, an authentic Brazilian steakhouse}
Maybe for a vegetarian this might be a good option, but to many the salad bar is an after thought to the main attraction; "our gaucho chefs still expertly grill each of our 15 cuts of meat and offer you continuous tableside service."

Isnt that like going to Peter Lugers and asking for the fish of the day?
Ice machine refills
Sums it up about right!
This thread reminds me of the people that load up their purses with all the "free" ketchup, sugar, salt, pepper etc. Then they are the first to complain when prices go up......well then stop helping yourself to a 3" stack of "free" napkins!
Good Southern Cuisine / BBQ in Providence/Patwucket, RI
Kc's, Wilson's, and Blue Ribbon are 3 that come to mind. Im not saying that what we have in New England is as good as what one would find in Texas, KC, or the Carolinas, Im just saying that there are some options where you can get a respectable plate of Q whereas you would be less likely to get fresh lobster/clams in the heart of Texas purely due to geography.
Essex, Stowe and Burlington
I can see how some of the other items would be more filling, but at $8-$10 it still seems to be a bit on the expensive side, especially considering the portion sizes I saw on other diners plates.

I disagree. Good q can be found all over New England, just not in RI. Its not like we dont have local quality meats or wood for smoking.

Wes's is only good if you need the rims removed from your vehicle. Their food and service has fallen so far Im suprised they are still in business.
LJ's fell flat on my two visits, Ricks isnt bad, but I hold firm that Smokey Bones is the best of RI's sorry lot. United was clearly the best in RI, but it close a little bit back - and even then United was mediocre compared to Q I have had in other parts of the country.
Smokey Bones is still choice one when I have a hankering.

United recently closed to my great dismay. I wasnt a fan of LJ's in my 2 visits.
For bbq in RI the list for me is:
1. Smokey Bones
2. Rick's Roadhouse
3. LJ's
4. Wes's
It's quite sad that a chain top's the list but their Q is very consistent and fairly tasty. Rick's is also decent but not quite as consistent. I hope United's owners get things together and reopen!
Buffalo Wild Wings???
Tried a few days ago with mixed results. We had boneless wings which were well cooked and tasty, however they were tiny! Looked more like overgrown popcorn chicken than boneless wings you get at other chains. They had a promotion where they were 60 cents each, we split 3 orders of 4 (3 different sauces) and an order of fries. Honestly it was good we werent starving because on a normal day I could have eaten everything myself!
Essex, Stowe and Burlington
My fiancee and I just came back from a 2 night stay at the Essex as well. We also had dinner at Amuse as part of our package. Overall we were impressed with the dinner - with the minor exception of my appetizer. I had a duck/torteloni dish where the meat had a very fine texture that was a bit off putting. We both thoroughly enjoyed our entrees and dessert.
Other meals included breakfast at Magnolia which was amazing. I had the lemon ricotta pancakes which may have just been the best pancakes I have ever had. She had a vermont omelette which she enjoyed but the hit for her was the toast/homemade strawberry preserve. Low light was the homemade ketchup which was downright inedible - kinda wished I had some heinz packets for the homefries.
We also had breakfast at the Skinny Pancake. Mixed review here....we both enjoyed our food but felt it was a bit overpriced. I had a traditional crepe and a side of house cut fries (some of the best ever) but honestly left still hungry. $5 for a single unstuffed crepe with syrup? Breakfast was over $30 which isnt terribly overpriced had I not needed to stop at a local bagel shop on our way out of town.
Final meal in the area was at Sarducci's in Montpelier. Food was great and very reasonably priced. Only hiccup was rushed service who was late on the water refills and forgot a request for a second beverage.
Admit it....You go to Ikea just for lunch.
32 replies and only one mention of the cinnamon buns? These are the only reason I can be talked into going to IKEA.

On a side not, what are the chances a moderator can fix the title to this thread??? OCD
Your opinion.....
2.5 minutes of my life I will never get back.....now 3.5 minutes including this post. Probably doesnt come off as funny (to me) because its too close to the truth, are there really people like this in the world?

Can anyone provide me with feedback on these caterers?
When the host is late serving the meal - also rude? Is it ok for guests to leave?
Sandy's comment was she had guests that expected her to serve the food immediately after they arrived (for the record I think this is extremely rude). She commented that this was "the norm" in her area. Therefore when you said they were "rude guests" that is where I disagree. If a host is going to deviate from "the norm" I feel they have a duty to let their guests know beforehand. If they are going to serve dinner at midnight when people are used to eating at 7pm, if they are serving pad thai and satay on St. Patricks day, if they have a dry house and invite heavy wine drinkers etc etc etc. Communication is the key if a host intends on deviating from the norm, otherwise its perfectly acceptable for a guest to be upset. Granted a guest still needs to be gracious, but patience can wear thin when things dont go as expected.

Crappy guests? When in Rome.....
Through this entire thread the word constantly brought up is communication. If the host is going to go against tradition/customary norm then they need to communicate this before hand. Sandy clearly knows what the epectations are in her part of the country so in the invitation she should let it be known what time dinner will be served.
you said it yourself "usual guidelines" and those change family to family, state to state, country to county.
PVD/RI * March '12 * Open/Closed/Coming Soon
Mizu, has opened up on Warwick Ave in Warwick (a month or two back). They offer sushi, hibachi, and other Japanese inspired cuisine. They spent a TON of $$ redoing the interior as the place was a dump and is now quite nice. We haven't tried the hibachi side yet but the restaurant side has some nice dishes. SO loved the sushi, I liked the teriyaki, friends enjoyed their meals as well. We had great service once and only so/so service the second time but nothing to stop us from returning - just felt a bit more rushed by the second server. Bartender was a bit amateurish, but the cocktails were on the inexpensive side. Comparable to Kon in EG, just a bit cheaper. A welcomed addition to the Warwick dining scene!

Michael Jordan's Steakhouse @ Mohegan Sun
Last time I went I ordered my salad without blue cheese, noting to the server my dislike of it. I ordered mac & cheese as my side, took a bit or two and notice a very strong unpleasant cheese flavor.....yup blue cheese. That sure did piss me off!

I would try posting in the Southern NE board, you will get a better response than here.
Steakhouses - Stop asking me to cut into my steak as soon as it arrives!
I have been asked this on several occasions as well, and every time I just respond with "I'm sure it's fine, if not I will let you know." I usually order steak medium, but can tolerate anything from med-rare to med-well. You can usually tell just by sight/touch if its the right temp anyways. If the exterior is extremely charred or barely charred I may want to double check but come to think of it Im not sure I have ever sent a steak back to the kitchen due to temp.
How come my 2-week-old Don Julio flour tortillas are NOT moldy?
My guess would be the tortillas have a low moisture content. Mold needs moisture, among other things, to grow,
