Good lunch near UNO?

I'm too late to help the original poster, but China Tea Garden is a really satisfying super cheap option - it is on Elysian Fields heading away from the water. Huge nola-portions and all the meat is of a good quality - no parts and pieces. This is a flavor oasis in a tough neighborhood. Have not yet tried the new small sushi place across the street: Good Time Sushi - if you search them on Google, someone has posted a picture of their menu in the Google search itself.

I'm convinced the best burger in the French Quarter is at Jäger Haus

You must've been to POC on a weird night - we eat there all the time and your description does not fit their incredibly fresh, tasty, quality burgers (this is the only place in nola where I order meat rare.) The amazing buttery loaded potates seal the deal.

The Swamp Room in Metairie tastes exactly like POC, but is cheaper. Not the same atmosphere tho.

Baby Shower Sweets

Off the beaten path is Sweet and Savour's bakery in Gentilly on Elysian Fields - they do all the regular things, but also do special order king cakes, petit foures, and strawberry shortcakes, off the top of my head. They also make their own donuts. My bf is a huge fan of their specialty cake squares - lemon, caramel, red velvet, german chocolate - with tiny thin layers of cake and icing, but larger and less meltaway than petite fours.

Cheap Ass New Orleans food

Coops: paneed chicken with alfredo, duck quesadillas, and, of all things, wonderful veggie burger offering. And anything covered in their homemade blue cheese dressing.

Best 'ethnic' dishes in the city?

Has anyone found an Ethiopian restaurant? Never made it to the now-dead Red Sea and all my searching online is for naught...

Squeal BBQ

What style is Squeal's sauce? My current fav is The Joint, but have been trying to get to Hyster's which was recommended by a friend - has anyone tried Hyster's?

Best Catering In NOLA Area?

Sammy's on Elysian Fields has a great looking catering menu - their lunches are affordable, large, rich and wonderful - and are small enough where they would probably work with you on something custom to your budget...

Mat and Naddie's buffet

Mat and Naddie's is super cute, but doesn't feel like a good deal - the food provided is plentiful and fresh, but the selection is small - tons of cold cuts and cheeses, tasty breads and some interesting saldas and hot items, but overall a little flavorless. We got there, 15 or so minutes before lunch was to shut down, and they were out of some of the more interesting advertised items like the quiche. They are such a small that operation that I felt bad about begrudging them the lack of quiche and other yummy stuff, but the lack of dessert too, plus the overpriced tiny beverages made me feel like the starving American in a too modestly run European country cafe. I look forward to trying the curry corner mentioned in the other posts...
