We like the lahmajoun. Fresh Armenian 'pizzas' with ground meat and veg spread (no cheese). Get 12 in a pack for $13. Ten minutes in a 350 degree oven. Crispy, thin crust and yummy taste. Freeze well since they come with a piece of parchment between each. They are also great on a weekend morning...put them in the oven while you make a very thing crepe-like omelet. When the lahmajoun is ready, put the thin omelette on top and roll both together into a tube you can hold in your hands and enjoy. Tasty and filling...Probabley good hangover cure after a big night out.
Ketchup chips best tasting.
Not sure if Krispers can be counted as chips but the ketchup flavour was my fave. Nearly ate a whole bag by myself in one go! Love them.
Has anyone been to "Port" in Pickering
Been several times with friends who have a sailboat in the nearby marina, usually in the summer. We have a bunch of appetizers and cocktails at the bar instead of full meals in the dining room and we really enjoy it. We prefer the casual atmos in the bar area. Don't tend to get a warm reception at the front door for some reason but servers and bartenders are great.
New restaurant in Royal Bank Plaza
Went there late Nov. for lunch with 3 work colleagues. There was some weird secrecy thing going on with letting us look at the wine list, but anyway, we ordered a glass each and then our meals.
I had pasta with clams, which was good, and the server offered me grated cheese, which I accepted (I know, I'm waiting to hear from all the 'no cheese with seafood' folks out there!). Colleague had another pasta (penne I think it was) in a red sauce and found it cold and blah. I think it was left sitting, waiting for the other dishes to be ready, because they came out fresh and very hot. For some reason, the server didn't take the pasta off her bill, but took off her glass of wine instead (?). Third was mushroom pizza and they said it was good. The fourth had salad and grilled calamari, which came with more of the salad, and it was fine but she kind of overdosed on salad. I suppose it would have been nicer if the server could have let her know that the calamari would already come with a lot of salad on the plate when she ordered it along with the additional salad, she might have had something else instead of more salad and enjoyed the meal more.
One thing they could do, (besides sorting out their wine list) is put their phone number somewhere visible. I tried to look them up to make reservations and couldn't find them. I left my office and went to the location to see if I could get a phone number, couldn't see one, and they weren't open yet so no one there to ask. Maybe they have by now; I haven't been back since.
Caplansky's - You have got to be kidding me!
A friend took me to Pancer's for lunch and I had a much better experience both in food and atmosphere than lunch at Caplansky's. The smoked meat sandwich was great, fries were great (overdone at Caplansky's), free sampling of the pastrami for next time and the server was this sweet older Jewish lady that looked after us like your Grandma would. Caplansky's was ok but no reason to go back (for me).

Chow-worthy stops on the way to Rice Lake?
Rubbs, also in Campbellford.

Slow cooked bbq and we love the chicken wings.

And what is with the 'no mayo in the restaurant'? I like mayo to dip my fries in and got the exact same response a couple of months ago. Weird.
South - southern Latino cuisine (Ajax)
I haven't been either and would like to know if it is any good as well.
Best date restaurant in Ajax?
I sugget Casa Verde, Pickering Village. http://www.casaverderestaurant.ca/
Toronto's Best Chicken Wings
I know it's a chain, but may I ask what people think of Wild Wing? Normally I don't like chains but went to one in Orillia, first time at a Wild Wing, and really enjoyed everything, Wings, fries, onion rings, service, all good.
Shwarma in Oshawa/Whitby/Durham?
Ok so not in Oshawa, but Pita Delite in Ajax on Harwood is my favourite local shwarma place. Went for lunch this Sat. and had beef shwarma. Totally yummy. If you like it spicy ask for the special hot sauce, which is kept under the counter.
Also a must have is the fava been dip, only available on Sat. and also kept under the counter, not on the menu. Comes with salad plate of red onion, cucumber, hot peppers etc and a couple of warm pitas. Heaven. Makes one wonder what other treasures are hidden under the counter...
Dim Sum
Love Yiu Wah. Been going for years approx 1 Saturday/month for dim sum, usually in the colder months. Always find a good variety of choices freshly made. Love the trolley ladies, look forward to seeing them. Some of them have been there for ages.
More stocking/supply chain issues at Loblaw's - getting fed up - lame excuses - foil pans and tarragon !
Not worth it to complain. They sold us "live" mussels from the fish counter that were off (they wouldn't close when tapped) and when we returned them, they said something like, "well they must be fresh becaue we just took them out of the fridge". Well then they were in the fridge dead! Insert blank look.
This is the type of response we got and it happened more than once. Eventually we just stopped going there at all and now shop at Sobeys for most general grocery items.

Agree about the produce in the Ajax Superstore. Completely stopped shopping there a couple of years ago now. Half rotten produce on the shelves. I guess they don't think people in Ajax need to eat their veggies.
Best Indian in Toronto - where is it?
My favourite is Mt. Everest in Pickering Village (Ajax). Also a new restaurant recently opened on Liverpool in Pickering called Zeera's By the Bay. Was also excellent.
moving to the country
I see the oringinal post is a few years old now, but we have a cottage in the same area and do like to support local places.
Capers is great. Had lunch on their patio many times. Also Dooher's in Campbellford for caramel tarts (as recommended by the server at Capers).
Recommend Rubbs in Warkworth http://www.rubbsbbq.ca/.
Superb tender smoked brisket and amazing chicken wings. Shared their Fat Elvis - Full rack of St. Louis ribs, a pound of wings, double skillet of Creole shrimp. Had poutine, coleslaw and baked beans for sides. All was excellent. Keep in mind the St. Louis ribs are side ribs not back ribs but still good. If you like it hot ask for scotch bonnet sauce on the side.
Where to buy Za'atar?
I found it at Longo's, in Markham on their specialty spice rack.
