Compass or Cafe Luxembourg?

Having been to both, I prefer the food at Compass and it will definitely be more comfortable at Compass. I have never had bad service at Compass, btw.

Best all you can eat Sushi in New York

Some other mid tier suggestions are Sushiya on 56th St. bet. 5th & 6th which is walkable and Fatty Fish on 62 St. & 1st Ave if you will be on the Upper East Side. Those two in addition to the other ones mentioned are my favorites.

You will find public transportation in NYC very convenient and pretty much any place in Manhattan is accessible. Have a great trip.

Review of various Charlotte Restaurants during second half of my trip

We went to:

New South for lunch and I liked it. Two people in our party had the Fri. special which was pork chops and said it was good. I tried the pecan crusted tilapia which I thought was tasty and my crab cakes were quite good, mostly crabmeat and very little filler. Our vegetarian friend had a mix of sides: brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese. The first two were fine, but mac and cheese with penne was not to my taste and I also found the cheese too thin and quite unsatisfying. An order of fried green tomatoes as an app to share was OK. Although not sure they are in season now, as the taste was a little bland to me. It was lightly fried with some corn and horseradish cream on the side

Koishe for dinner. All the dishes we ordered was fine except for the shrimp pad thai. It was truly one of the worst pad thai I have ever had. We were joking around that the sauce was ketchup based. I think everyone took one bite of that dish and left it alone. Thank goodness that dinner we decided to share all our dishes and had it family style. The chicken with eggplant, beef with broccoli, eel with rice and vegetables rice noodles were all fine, as was the California roll and futomaki that we shared for an app.

Tin Tin Buffet lots of variety and turnover. It was very crowded and fresh food was constantly brought out. It was fine. There was nothing memorable or anything extremely bad. The good thing is that everyone is sure to find something that they can eat. I am not into buffets but one person in our party really likes this restaurant and so we went.

Nothing but Noodles, once again we shared and I really did not like much of anything I had. Eggplant parm over capellini, sesame udon noodles, beef stroganoff over egg noodles, pasta primavera, chicken with veg. lettuce wrap as an app. Tomato sauce was bland, udon noodles a little too sweet, stroganoff was off, not in a spoiled way, but we could not figure out what ingredient was in there that made it taste the way it did. We did not like it and it certainly does not taste the way that beef stroganoff usually tastes. Pasta primavera: way too much parmesan spoiled this dish. The only veg. in the lettuce wrap was carrots and red peppers.

McAlister Deli for a quick lunch. The pesto flat bread pizza was good, half a club sandwich and baked potato and cheese panini. It was all fine and not memorable at all.

Once again thanks Lynnlato for all your help. I certainly had a better experience this time than last year and hopefully will get to try more places next year. I have added Halcyon to the list for next year.

Review of various Charlotte Restaurants during first half of my trip

First off, thanks for all your help lynnlato. You were the only one to answer my posting and I was able to convince my sister to go to Ilios Noche. We went to Ilios Noche instead of Trio since you were not too keen on that one. I am very grateful to you for saving me from meals like Buca which I had to endure last year. So here goes where we have been so far.

Ilios Noche was fine for everyone except my sister. She ordered salmon medium rare and it came out well done. They were nice about it and did not charge us for it since she did not eat it. I had some of the pastichio which was slightly a different take than I have had in other greek restaurants but that is why I ordered it. I liked it, just thought it was very heavy and creamy and ended up taking half of it home. Too rich for me to eat in one sitting. Also had some of the cod with polenta which was quite good. We had a trio of desserts to share which I thought was a great idea. I wish more restaurants would let you pick 3 diff. desserts and give you a smaller portion of each so that you could try more variety.

Mama Ricottas for another dinner. I had the RW dinner which was 4 courses, bruschetta, pasta with pesto sauce, veal milanese and warm banana bread pudding. First course was the best. Never had pesto sauce that was so white or with so much cream before. This veal was the thickest milanese style I have ever had. I have always had it where it is pounded extremely thin. Bread pudding was mediocre. My sister once again ordered salmon medium rare and it came out well done. I don't get it. Fish is generally served medium rare in NYC. I finally told her to order it rare and maybe it will come out right. We shall see, I am here for another week and we will have some more places to go to before I return back to the frigid cold.

South 21 was on my list since I have never been to a drive in and thought it would be fun to try. Been there next. Really so not impressed with anything I had. I got the hamburger steak special, had some of the all the way hot dog and said well we don't have to come here again.

Showmars was a fast food that I would go to again. Had half a gyro sandwich and half a fish platter. Very good fish, wish McDonald's and Burger King fish sandwiches tasted like that. Onion rings were good too, so much better than the ones at South 21.

Thanks for the Halycon rec. We were at the museum last night and were going to stay for dinner but after hearing about the evening rain opted to leave Uptown earlier since we had a few dropoffs. That one may have to wait until my trip next year.

Will report again later. Once again thanks Lynnlato. Maybe next year I can bring you that burger from Spotted Pig. :>)

Anti Microwave

I absolutely agree that skillet on the stove is the best. I used to use a toaster oven but it is slower and dries out the pizza. I think that using a microwave is the absolute worst method of heating up pizza. I am not a fan of the microwave and only use it to reheat food when I bring lunch to the office, no other alternative then. I typically steam everything as my method of re-heating and cooking. I have this big pot that sits on my stove at all times. LOL

Need Comments and Recs for Charlotte Restaurants

Yes I remember you from last year too. I make annual visits to Charlotte around this time of the year and you and some of the regular posters from this board were very helpful last year too. I was given a copy of the index for this year's Citipass book and pretty much told to choose from there, but obviously some of my choices won't be from there. LOL Unfortunately Illios Noche is not in the book. However I will see if I can slip it in anyway. LOL Thanks for two other choices that are in the book.

Need Comments and Recs for Charlotte Restaurants

Thanks for giving me some new ideas to research. Unfortunately one of the relatives I am staying with has a Citipass book and all her choices and recs are from that book. Thankfully Bistro La Bon is in the book so that one won't be difficult to convince.

Halycon sounds great. I just checked their website and it reminds me of Stone Barn Hills in Westchester and the Modern at the MOMA. I think walking around that area and maybe Uptown too would be a fun thing to do after lunch? I saw a self guided public art tour that I would like to go to.

I don't expect to have my socks knocked off coming from NYC, but I just did not want a horrible meal. Last year I was taken to Buca and it was really rather bad. First thing I said for this year was I do not want to go to Buca again. LOL

Need Comments and Recs for Charlotte Restaurants

I will be coming down from NYC and staying for two weeks and need recs for breakfast, lunch/brunch and dinners. Moderate price range and a few nice lunchs and dinners as there will be some special occasion meals. Also one friend who is just coming for the weekend is a vegetarian, so if anyone knows of a place with lots of choices for him, that would be great. I am looking for any non Asian cuisines. In terms of location, we are flexible. Half the time I will be staying in the Ballantyne area and the other in Idlewild (??? that is what my zip code search said). So anything near either neighborhood or in between will be fine.

I have been checking menus and websites on-line. So far my research has resulted in both Trio and Mama Ricotta's for dinner. I want to go to Prices Chicken too. Other possibilities are Providence Cafe, New South, George's Brasserie, Le Peep for breakfast (saw lots of veggie choices). I will be there during Rest. Week and wanted to know if there are any good choices for that week. Thanks for any suggestions./

Ouest

Nothing wrong with Ouest, just think the other two are better.

Looking for Charlotte Restaurants

Well tom is my last day and I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. The only other meals we had out were

Tin Tin Rest. for lunch buffet which was pretty good. Lots of variety and it was fine.

One of the people that I was staying with is a junk food addict so she said that we have to try fast food chains that are local to Charlotte. So we went to Cookout for burgers and onion rings, Captain D's for fried fish and shrimp and Cici's Pizza for pizza buffet. It was OK as far as fast food is concerned and I am not a fan of fast food but I have tried it once and now don't have to the next time I come down. LOL Was trying to go to Price's and South 21 for our fast food meals, but their hours and location just did not work with our schedule. Guess it will be during my next trip.

Thanks for everyones input. greatly appreciated.

Looking for Charlotte Restaurants

Thanks everyone for your help. I am still in Charlotte and thought that I would post some of the meals we had so far.

Roosters - Lunch for four of us. Food was fine, not wonderful. But we did not get off to a good start at this place. First off I made a reservation and we were seated at the worst table in the restaurant in the back right next to the server's station which really ticked off one member of our party. Also they were moving a table with glasses on top and the glass dropped and splattered glass all over our table while we were having our entrees. We had chicken pizza, chicken wings, the hangar steak, ribeye steak, pan fried corn, spinach, mac and cheese, beets and salmon. Spinach was extremely sandy and I should have returned it but did not bother and just did not eat it. Not worth a return trip at all.

Bonterra for dinner. We had the shortribs and crabcake as apps and scallops, 2 had hangar steak (specials of the day) veal chop as entrees. Crabcake was excellent, scallops and hangar steak a little on the salty side. None of us had any room for dessert.

Buca for dinner. Once was enough as I will not be willing to go there again. Although I have to say the eggplant parm was good and that was the only dish that we ordered that I would be willing to eat again.

Any Comments on Rooster in Charlotte?

Charlotte's daily Groupon discount is for Roosters and just wondering what people thought of this one? Any good and if so what are the must haves and avoids? I know it is near Southpark Mall and thought we might combine it with a shopping trip. Not sure what else is around there. I know it's OT, but any insight on that would be greatly appreciated as I am not familiar with the area. TIA

Looking for Charlotte Restaurants

Will be visiting for about 2 weeks in about 2 weeks and looking for some good casual places to eat both lunch and dinner. We need one nice place for a special occasion dinner, but the rest I would prefer casual and moderate. Great weekday lunch suggestions also would be appreciated.

Sorry I don't know neighborhoods well, but I know that I will be spending half my time in the Ballantyne area in the south and the other half in zip code 28212 where I have never been before. Last time I was there was about 2 years ago and we went to Table and Gallery both in the Ballantyne area. I was perusing through Open Table and saw that Miro is in the Ballantyne area but could find no postings about it here. Any comments and thanks for any suggestions.

I really liked the brussel sprouts pizza too, only small complaint is that it is on the oily side. I had some to doggie back and when I heated it up in my pan, lots of oil came out. Was not as noticeable at the restaurant.
