Very Best Mexican/or Ethnic food in Queens? Lunch-time adventure!
Thanks Missmasala, that's exactly where I was thinking, but didn't know if there was a better place. Thanks for reassuring me! Our last lunch adventure was to Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos and the picadas there were so outstanding. I'll be at Nixtamal tomorrow, any other picks for our next outing -please let me know everyone, thanks!
Very Best Mexican/or Ethnic food in Queens? Lunch-time adventure!
Kinda last minute, but my friend and I have access to a car and we want to go somewhere far to get an amazing lunch tomorrow! I was thinking Mexican food in Queens (I'm Mexican-American), but we're adventurous, so anything delicious plus hard to find anywhere else.
Have car, will travel! Help a chica out please :-)
Mediocrity thy name is 'The Islands'
sad to hear about the Islands, strangely enough I always went to the Island Village the spin off that had one of the original chefs. Their jerk was hot and tasty. I think they're closed now :-( it was a great place with actual seating and BYOB
Per Se or Gramercy Tavern
Victor, your experience just made me sigh with longing. Wow, what a memorable meal and birthday. Can I ask, dare I ask, how much was the bill? I know, if I have to ask I can't afford it. And it's true. But I can dream can't I??
Great UWS Pizza for an office party?
My boss is buying the staff pizza and needs a place to order delivery.
We're on 77th st. and there are so many pizza places on every block. Which is actually good? I mean, I can send her to Ray's but I'd actually like something worthwhile.
Your suggestions are greatly apprechiated.
BarBQ on 3rd Av & 6 st Bkln
Wow, there's one on 3rd? Cool, I'll have to check it out!
BarBQ on 3rd Av & 6 st Bkln
There's a place called BarBQ at 689 6th Avenue (Corner of 20th St.)
Not on 3rd ave, as far as I know.
If this is the place you mean, than yeah it's pretty good. Pulled pork and the mac&cheese is my favorite. Great hot sauces and bourbon.
Joy Indian Restaurant -disaster [moved from Outer Boroughs board]
Strangely enough, I've had a similar experience at Joy. Waited an hour, called, 1 1/2 later we got our food, turns out it's a veggie dish but we ordered lamb, another 1/2 hour and we finally get our cold food with no samosa hook-up to be found. The customer service there is pretty laking, not rude, just not good. The dishes do swim in an orange oil which I find to be a little too much. However, they're decent indian food for the area. I reiterate "For The Area." I've also had delivery from Kinara multiple times. Pretty good, about the same flavor as Joy. Really good samosas that come in a chickpea sauce.
While I'm sharing: At Joy the Garlic Curry Special is very good (lots of whole cloves of garlic!), so is the vindaloo. Kinara has a good saag paneer and vindaloo as well.
David's Brisket House: Renovation or Out of Business?
Well, the last thing I heard it was closed by D'OH for a long while and someone recently saw it being gutted. Renovations or new owners? So sad. I really loved their pastrami!
Anyone know anything more?
Any other local places that are just as good?
Cuban cafe con leche (Fort Greene/Park Slope)?
I suppose you can try the Havana Cafe (NY) or their outlet Havana Outpost (755-757 Fulton St). I like the cafe at the Manhattan one, but I'm not Cuban so I can't speak for it's authenticity. Also, Cubana Cafe on 272 Smith St.
Street food on the UWS
On 96th during lunchtime there's a chicken and rice vendor. Not awesome but your average C&R place. It makes that whole corner smell really good nevertheless!
Local Chili Ingredients in NYC
Mumm if you go there get some Manchego to top it off.
Local Chili Ingredients in NYC
Not sure if you're into spicy food. But adding chorizo and lots of jalapeños and other peppers works for me. If you go this route I'd also add some beans (white or pinto).
Booze brunch in Park Slope
Please let us know how it turns out and if they do champagne too (I'm not a big juice drinker).
Booze brunch in Park Slope
Yeah but the service is so bad there you'll probably only get 2 drinks out of them.
Sorrel: Any recent visitors?
My co-worker, sitting beside me right now, goes there almost on a weekly basis.
He says he went there last week for brunch and it was excellent like always.
Great newish spot on 5th ave--apropos cafe
Wow, I hate to dissagree with so many people, but I'm really surprised that anyone likes this place. Given I haven't tried the desserts or coffee, but I did have the pizzas and they were horrid. Small (though that didin't really matter), oily (and I like grease!) and the toppings were just bad. My pizza was the clam and it tasted so bad I could only force down a slice and a 1/2. The clams were brown, dry and chewey. I'm positive they came out of a can and they were cooked into a jerky-like form. My partner had some chorizo or sausage thing (can't remember). It was oily, salty, and basically tasted like oversalted sausage on a table cracker. Even the crust didn't have a good flavor.
Maybe I ordered the wrong type of pizza, or it was an off day (not crowded, they had plenty of time to make it). But for the price I'd rather pick from the other pizza/Italian place in PS or in Carrol Gardens for that matter.
Lucali's - what's going on?
Does anyone know what their corkage fee is there? And is it per bottle or just per table?
Convivium or Rose Water?
I loved my meal at Convivium a few months ago. Chicken livers -excellent, ravioli with duck ragu -excellent, friendly service and lovely atmosphere that makes you feel like you're in another land.
Canaille on 5th Ave, Park Slope
Has anyone else tried this place?
It was listed in the NYT's new openings section.
Back to Brooklyn
Al Di La -no reservations, but grab a drink nearby while you wait, no problem.
Convivium Osteria -google for their website. Amazing food and environment. "Chocolate" is next door for dessert! All on 5th ave.
On Flatbush there's Frannies (high-end pizza and small plates) and Flatbush Farm (the pub side is best for predinner drinks. Food, in general, not so good)
Check out menutopia for easy to find listings by neighborhood and menupages for reviews.
Fette Sau
Sorry, just had to chime in here. With all due respect. BarBBQ's free bourbon hour is a disgusting mess. I love the place, I really do, but on that night it gets packed to the walls with frat boys and hipsters all trying to get at the bar for the booze. None ordering food, some buying beers, but generally just standing and squeezed together in a rather small dining area.In my experience at least. Go on a weekend.
On a quest for the best Tamales in the 5 boroughs.
Havana Outpost and the Cafe Havana in Manhattan has the corn and pretty good food.
Tamales: go to Sunset Park and walk around 5th ave. You'll find it.
Just don't tell the DOH, they already ruined my ballfields
Where can I find Soyrizo? (Not Chorizo)
I know, I know, why would I want a soy-based chorizo when I can eat all the tasty chorizo that I've always grew up on. Well, I'm trying to lose the gut, and seriously, I make a freaking delicious soyrizo and jalapeño frittata.
So, where can I find El Burrito Soyrizo. So far I haven't found it in NY.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Manhattan or Brooklyn suggestions are welcome.
Distinctly New York eateries?
There is some great Jamaican/Caribbean food in the Prospect Park area, specifically in Prospect Heights and Crown Heights. The Islands comes to mind. Mummmm Jerk Chicken.....
Taco Truck, Where are you???
Damn, Oh well......
It sucks to work on the UWS. No cheap eats.....
Taco Truck, Where are you???
So I've heard about the 96th street and Broadway taco truck, "Super Tacos" (I think it's called). I tried for the second time to schlep my way up there for lunch today only to find no truck in sight. Again!
I only have an hour lunch. On my first trip I headed from Central Park West, over to Broadway, and took the 1 to 96th. Taking me just about 20 minutes. I looked up and down the block and the side streets. Nothing. I ended up taking some mediocre street cart food back with me.
I waited a month and decided to give it another shot today with the same result. This time I was so bummed I didn't even hit up the halal cart..... sadness.
Super Taco, why have you forsaken me!?!?
David's Brisket House: Renovation or Out of Business?
Sorry to break it to you, but it's NOT out of business (at least not yet) so your other guess is right. But I think it's against the rules here (CH) to actually say it?
smoke joint: what the ?!?!?
Meh, I didn't really like it when I went. Tried the pork and tried the catfish. The catfish had possibilities (tender and the crust looked golden) but ended up flavorless. I won't even talk about the pork. The mac n cheese was exceptionally awful. I've never met a mac n cheese I didn't like, but this was just watery and gross. The thick corkscrew noodles they use were very chewy too. The vinegar slaw turned out to be the only part I liked. I’ve had good bbq down south, so maybe I’m just picky.
Sandwich rapture
Catene Deli -is that the place that has fried calamari on their sign?
