What's Your Earliest Conscious Food Memory?

My earliest memory is BREAD. I remember an unsliced loaf sitting on our kitchen counter, I reached up (so must have been shorter than a standard kitchen counter), shoeved my hand in and pulled out the insides of the loaf. My mom went to slice it and there was only the crust left. Now that was good bread!

Browned Butternut Squash Couscous

Any other suggestions as to a cumin substitute? We don't like cardamom either!

Need Help with Pie Ideas

I am going to bake a pie for Thanksgiving (this weekend in Canada) and have no idea what kind to make. My daughter wants a combination of strawberry/rhubarb/apple pie. Is this too many ingredients for pie or should I just go whole hog and maybe even add cranberries into the mix?

Need help formulating my Thanksgiving dessert

Oh my god...can I come to your place for Thanksgiving dessert? Last year's sounds like a dream come true! Re your question about this year's dessert - I would forego creamcheese and orange entirely and stick with the caramel flavours - that seems more "autumn" to me. Good luck!

Three Ingredients! -- Soy Chicken Wings

Tried these and they are excellent. The sticky glaze is ideal for my tastes; I've never understood the desire for crispy wings. I'm quite turned off when ordering wings in a restaurant and receiving these crispy things where they just dumped on the sauce of your choice. Needless to say, I prefer to make them at home and just love experimenting with ingredients. My sister tried a similar one to this that was also 3 ingredients - tequila, lime and soy sauce (well 4 ingredients including the wings!)

Basic Baked Potatoes

I tried a russet rubbed with canola and course salt baked at 400 an it turned out beautiful! Was quite dry inside and therefore accepted the butter gratefully! I also priced fairly deep holes all around before roasting.

Lemon-Oregano Roasted Potatoes

I just used new potatoes last night and they turn out great. Some of my family thought lemon & potatoes was a 'weird' combination - but they got educated!

Should You Tip on Takeout?

I agree with Billy33 from New Zealand. I'm from Canada and think the whole tipping thing has gotten way out of hand. This is not a criticism or commentary on servers in any way. I feel that maybe food establishments should pay their employees a decent wage so they don't have to depend on tips to survive.

Perfect Potato Salad

Lots of hard boiled eggs and using Miracle Whip instead of mayo is the way I do it. I like to add green onions, chopped celery and sprinkle with black pepper and paprika.

Beef liver?

In Canada, beef liver (from mature animal) is extremely cheap. I hate to say this, but we feed it to our cats for a treat every so often. I still haven't gotten over being forced to eat it as a child.

On Servers Forgetting Orders

Dear luniz:
You say "I don't like it when people tell me how to do my job, why should I tell them how to do theirs?" Answer: Because everyone needs feedback on their performance in order to improve. Doesn't matter if you work in an office or in a restaurant. If you want a tip (or bonus in the corporate world), you have to live up to your customers' expectations.

Food that Most People Love and You Don't...

Don't need an argument from anyone about how great these things are (this is simply my personal taste). A few of my "unfavorite things" are garlic, raw tomatoes, cucumber, melons, shellfish.

The Basics: How to Make Turkey Gravy

I would never discard the excess turkey fat. That's where all the flavour is! I would not use butter either, just whatever fat the turkey produced. I've always made turkey stock and used that for the next turkey, it's SO much better than store-bought chicken stock.

BURGER PLACE IN EDMONTON

Delux Burger Bar is pretty good - they have an appetizer called "Delux Sliders" which are bite-sized Kobe beef burgers. Pretty darn good! Located at 9682 - 142 Street in Edmonton.

I could have sworn it was called "Latitude 54", but I've been wrong before! Whatever the name, it was great food!

Try Latitude 54. We were there mid-August for a wedding and stopped in here to get "a bite". Once we were seated discovered it was not a place to rush the experience. Took our time and had a blast. Memorable was the Beef Carpaccio and the Halibut. Very friendly services and not too terribly expensive.

Taste of Edmonton - not to miss?

Sooooo disappointed (again) about Taste. A couple of mouthfuls of food costing $4 - $5!! Boring restaurants participate with a couple of exceptions. Have suffered this every year, hoping something will get better, but it never does. Also would have liked to sit down and have a brew but there are never enough tables/chairs and lineups are horrendous.
