NYC Chowhounders headed to Portland-Research Completed, would love your thoughts!
I've posted this on portlandfood.org as well so am cross-posting just in case others have thoughts on our food itinerary below!
Hi all,
My husband and I are NYC foodies headed to Portland in October. We'll arrive Saturday afternoon and will be in Portland until Tuesday morning - we're spending a few days on the coast and in the wine region. We'll return the following Friday before we catch a flight back to NYC. I've done EXTENSIVE research but would love some input from locals. Here is how I made my selections: 1) Farm to table restos since Portland was in a pioneer in this 2) We have great ethnic restos in NYC including great Thai which is why Pok Pok is not on the list 3) We are staying at the Nines so any suggestions of nearby places for coffee and drinks would be great
Saturday arrival (around noon)
Lunch: Cafe Castagna for their burger (my husband loves burgers and I've heard good things about their fries)
Dinner: HH at Park Kitchen and then the food carts on SE 12th and Hawthorne
Sunday morning:
Coffee: Spella
Brunch: Simpatica Dining Hall or Arleta Library or Pine State Biscuits? Iam really torn since I love brunch and not sure which is best. We may also go to the Mount Hood/River Gorge area so the earlier the better so we can set out on our day trip.
Lunch: Pick up sandwiches at Laurelhurst Market
Dinner: Toro Bravo - i'm a little hesitant whether we should go here or try some other place since there are decent tapas places in NY.
Monday:
Coffee: Coffee Northwest
Breakfast: Perhaps just grabbing something at Coffee NW or at Ken's Artisan Bakery
Lunch: The lunch carts! Definitely want to check out Tabor
Brewery: Hopworks or Bailey's Taproom
Dinner: HH @ Clyde Common and Ten01 (if we can make it in time)
Questions:
1) I'd like to splurge on one last meal the Friday we return to Portland.. was thinking the Beast or Le Pigeon but would love thoughts on this. Don't really want to spend more than $40/person (including wine if possible?)
2) Any suggestions on what foodie items we can bring back? I'm thinking coffee for sure from Stumptown or Ristretto

Downtown LA - NYC Chowhounder with NO CAR
Hi everyone,
I'll be staying at the Omni in downtown LA with no car (most likely - unless there are no foodie options in the area). I've done some research and hear that the resto in the hotel is good. Are there any chow-worthy places within walking distance or should I give in and rent a car for a day to explore some of LA's other dining areas? I'm only in LA for 2 days.

Tower Diner, Forest Hills
I've ordered delivery from here - they have an online delivery system which is really convenient and quick. It's decent - we got the usual diner fare - burgers and fries. It's not a bad place to eat if you're looking for comfort food in the neighborhood.
Early morning eats/good coffee joints near New Orleans Marriott?
I'm excited to be heading to NOLA next week for work! Unfortunately, my days will be packed and the only real time I'll have a chance to go "exploring" or taste the wonderful cuisine of New Orleans is early in the morning (my days will be begin at 730am).
Are there any places within walking/jogging distance to the New Orleans Marriott (on Canal) for good breakfasts or coffee? Also, they'd have to be open relatively early. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!
Great weekend on the North Fork
My husband and I had a lovely weekend in the North Fork - great wines and good eats! Coming from NYC, it was so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city!
We left Friday evening and grabbed dinner at the Premier Diner in Commack. It was good diner food, packed inside and hit the spot since we were both starving.
On Saturday, we stopped by Junda's Bakery (after going to Tanger). We sampled some of the baked goods (raspberry cheese babka muffin and a cheese puff) - this will need to be a regular stop for us each time we go out to the North Fork! We had lunch at Love Lane Kitchen (fish tacos and fish/chips) - great home-cooked food in a nice atmosphere. We went to the Bedell and Corey Creek Wineries (we've consistently gone there for the past few years). We stayed in Greenport but had dinner in the AMAZING North Fork Table and Inn. To say that the food there is delicious, is an understatement. We have been to some of the "finer" restaurants in NYC and this ranks up equally among them. Also, while it's a bit pricey, I felt as though for the quality, the service and ambience, it was worth it. My husband at the LI duck and I had the paella. For dessert, he had the ice-cream sandwich and I had the carrot cake. I'm looking forward to a return trip sometime in the Fall!
On Sunday, we stopped by the Briermere farms for a pie on the way home. I know that place gets mixed reviews on the board but their pies are awesome!
Good eats near Loew's (Cherry Creek area) and Grand Hyatt?
Hi Denver area chowhounds!
I'm headed to town on Friday evening for business with my boss and we're staying at the Loew's Hotel (E. Mississippi Ave) in the Cherry Creek area. Any dinner recs, bakeries or quality coffee within walking distance to the hotel? We will have a rental car so would be willing to venture out. We're traveling from NYC and are looking for something reasonable for dinner (entrees below $20). Should we check out Elway's-someone suggested this to me.
I'll be on my own for Saturday and will be staying at the Grand Hyatt on Weltonr. Any good eats around there for lunch or bakeries nearby? I have to catch an early flight on Sunday morning so are there any nearby breakfast or coffee places where I can grab a bite?

What to get on Scarpetta anniversary menu?
My husband and I also went last night and thought it was very good. The bread basket was delicious. I enjoyed the food but I'm not sure whether it would warrant another visit from me.
We had the following -
First Course:
-short ribs (I'd order this over the polenta)
-polenta
Second Course:
-Tagliatelle
-Agnolototti (this was delicious and the wine pairing went really well with this dish)
Third Course:
-Capretto
-Turbot
Dessert:
-I can't remember the name but it was a panna cotta with coconut gelato (I think). I was hoping for something chocolate-y but this was pretty good.

Good Eats Near the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge?
Hi all,
Any decent eats around this area? Not Japanese but am open to any local spots that are reasonably priced and open later in the evening since we may not get here till late. We'll be driving from Manhattan so if there are any worthy stops we should make to eat dinner, please feel free to offer those suggestions as well!

I'm trying to decide b/w these 3 restos in Astoria for tomorrow evening. I'm particularly craving meze and grilled octopus. Other factors would be nice ambiance and reasonable prices for the food and wine (we're trying to be more budget conscious eating out). Any suggestions among these 3? Thank you!
Best General Tso's Chicken in Rego Park/Forest Hills Area?
I know it's not authentic chinese food but I sometimes crave some good americanized chinese food. Can anyone recomment a good place in the Rego Park/Forest Hills area that delivers or is accessible via subway?
Any thoughts on East Ocean Palace?
I've tried the places below and just wasn't impressed:

Dragon King (decent and would probably order from here again)

Marseille has a decent brunch and you can make a reservation as well.
need rustic northern italian reco for birthday dinner for huge hound!
Have you looked at Peasant? I'm not sure whether it's northern italian but it's rustic and the wine list was pretty good.

There's also Cafe Katja on the LES - great sausages and beer selection. It's on Orchard. I went there last week and it's pretty reasonable, authentic and tasty.
I wasn't enamored with Demel either - the cakes are good, but something about being in the middle of a mall turned me off.
Oko frozen yogurt coming to Forest Hills!
So could this potentially be a sign of better things to come in the food scene in Forest Hills? I've been to the Oko location in Park Slope and it's decent frozen yogurt (a bit pricey for what it is, but it's an organic and all natural product). Their other location is in the East Village. I hear that they'll also be offering desserts which maybe a good alternative to the meager offerings we have on Austin (apart from the Bonelle).
Weekly restaurant specials (i.e. half-priced bottles of wine)
Do you all know of any restaurants that have weekly specials whether it's half-priced bottles of wine or dinner specials? I know that Nolita House, Barna and Bourgeois Pig have half-priced bottles of wine on Tuesdays. Any other places you're aware of? I'd appreciate suggestions! Thanks.
Quiet place for a book club meeting in midtown?
So I've racked my brain and can't come up with a place for a book club meeting to take place. Here are the parameters:
-There will be 6-7 of us.
-Someplace in midtown (east/west) since we all live in various areas (Harlem, Bronx, Queens, UES, etc).
-A quiet winebar/bar/coffee spot/light bites where we can hear one another speak.
-A flexible place where the resto staff won't get upset if one of us comes in late to join the group.
In the past - we've met at Cafe Notte on the UES which worked well because it was spacious, light bites and quiet. We're trying to find an alternative since this location wasn't convenient for everyone.
I was thinking Cafe Grainne (which I realize is below Midtown) but it maybe too small?

Review: Dimple (the "interim Vatan")
Yes, was there last week and enjoyed it!! You basically get a small tasting of every item that they've got listed on the fixed price menu. If you want more of any one item, they're happy to bring it to you. Go with an empty stomach because it's a lot of food. It's a great deal, nice ambiance and very attentive service.
Where should I have my tea party?
My bridal party threw me a tea party at Arium in the meatpacking district. I highly recommend this place - it's in an art gallery type of space and we practically had the place to ourselves! The tea selection was extensive and the food was decent. They do a nice job and service was attentive.
Sustainable lunch deliveries in Manhattan
My former workplace had a similar policy - City Bakery delivers to midtown and Pret A Manger has catering possibilities as well.
Asiate RW review?
I had lunch there yesterday for RW. It honestly wasn't too bad but if you're deciding between Asiate and Gramercy, I think Gramercy would probably be a better choice. They had 2 appetizer choices: a sweet corn soup and heirloom tomato salad with burrata (I had this - it was fresh and tasty). There were 3 entree choices (braised short rib, sea bass and risotto). I was a bit disappointed with the sea bass and it looked as though the short ribs would have been a better selection. Dessert was decent - it was a ginger cake (which tasted chocolate to me) with 2 types of chocolate mousse on top. The views were great and while service was a bit rushed, overall it was a pleasant experience.
Awful Restaurant Week Lunch at Megu (uptown)
We went there this past week for dinner and I found it to be pretty good as well. It wasn't exceptional but service was attentive, the food was decent and we enjoyed it. I probably wouldn't return but it's a place I normally would not have gone to had it not been RW.
Friendhouse for chinese...
It's solid bordering on pretty good chinese takeout. I used to order from them all the time when I lived in Stuyvesant town. Their sushi isn't bad either.
Despana Recommendations?
Hi there,
I normally go to DiPalo's to get tapas-like (prosciutto, truffle cheese, etc) items to enjoy at home but I've heard great things about Despana so will be giving them a try. Can you recommend any "must try" items from Despana? I've read good things about their sandwiches but am interested in which meats, cheeses, prepared foods people have enjoyed in the past.

Driving from Manhattan to Providence, RI - needing various suggestions
Hi everyone,
Two foodies are taking a break from NYC for a weekend away in Providence. We'd love some suggestions for meals - not Italian or Asian please. We enjoy seafood, bakeries (!!) and local/organic restaurants but pretty open to everything. We'll be staying at the Renaissance. Also, we will be visitng a relative in Cranston, RI so would love suggestions there too.
I've scoured the boards a bit and am considering the following: La Laiterie, Seven Stars Bakery, Nick's, 3 Steeple.
These are our 3 questions:
1) Any additional thoughts/suggestions for Providence?
2) Recommendations for Cranston?
3) Finally, any spots we should check out on the way to Providence?

Decent (ok drinkable) coffee at 34th Street/8th Ave?
I can commiserate with the lack of coffee choices in this area. Pret a Manger has decent coffee - there's one north of you on 38th and 7th Avenue. Cafe Macaron (off of 7th on 36th Street) has french press coffee which isn't bad. Also, I kind of enjoy the Fay Da bakery cup of coffee (on 34th street, closer to 8th avenue) - it's similar to the coffee cart coffees, but slightly better.
Kid Friendly in 10-15 block vicinity of Penn Station?

My cousins and their adorable 2 year old are in town and am racking my brain on where we can go for dinner tomorrow night? They have a 1030pm train to catch at Penn Station so somewhere relatively close would be ideal. I was thinking Shake Shack since it'd be outdoors, there's a playground nearby, etc or Otto?
