June 2015 COTM: VERDURA - storecupboard recipes, antipasti, salads - pp 27-106

I made this gorgeous, delicious salad for a weekend potluck, and it was very well received. Because I doubled the recipe, I needed 2 peppers so I could use a yellow one as well as an orange one. For the cucumbers, I used several small Persian cucumbers and didn't peel them, so was even more colorful.

Good vineyard with real food near Seneca Falls

I have no direct knowledge of food offerings, but I'm attaching a map of the Cayuga Lake wine trail for your perusal and hope you will find it useful. There's also a Seneca Lake wine trail if you want to go further afield.

And here are some area restaurants that may serve food you find worthwhile.

Catering near Syracuse for a casual outdoor event?

Happy to provide more if they don't work out, and please let us know the outcome. It might be helpful to know the small lake in question, for example, and the number of people.

How can I repair my crunchy rice pudding?

Yes, more liquid and more time on the stove should help.

And I just saw a woman yank three radishes out of a bunch. Good grief.

Dinosaur Barbecue (http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com), Pascale's (http://www.pascalecompanies.com), Alto Cinco (http://altocinco.net/catering/), and Wegmans (http://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/sto...) come to mind, but there are more. I can't speak from experience about their catering, but they all serve at least reasonably good food in their restaurants.

What cookbooks have you bought lately, or are you lusting after? Happy early summer, June 2015 edition!

Well, this is the third time I've tried to respond to this.

My experience comprises 2 titles. The first is Charles Pham's first Vietnamese cookbook. The Kindle version seemed to lack the videos that made the electronic version more worthwhile than the print version. My second experience was with April Bloomfield's A Girl and Her Pig. Hands down, the Kindle was at best an awkward version of the printed book.

I don't think Richard Olney was a fun person. Just a guess.

At any rate, I'd like to be included in the adoption. I can contribute both cats and cookbooks.

I am looking for a way to thicken my home made salad dressing

Why do you need to thicken it? IMHO, Italian dressings aren't thick.

I think the Kindle versions are often hastily done without consideration for the particular virtues of electronic publishing. Ebooks, at least those I've bought, seem to be more thoughtfully set up.

Does anyone have a good macaroni and cheese recipe?

My nephew has adopted this one for its relative simplicity.

Many of us think we need to stop buying cookbooks. You might want to get a tablet, if you don't have one already, because it's an easy way to hide cookbooks (not excess, never excess).

How to preserve garlic in the desert

I (humid northeast) had good results by wrapping loosely each head in aluminum foil, putting them in my crock pot and cooking them overnight. At that point I think you could submerge them in olive oil for further storage (if someone knows otherwise, please chime in), but I just parked them in a container in the fridge for future enjoyment.

What gadgets/cookware would you have in an efficiency apt? (my list) (kid leaving in fall)

If he does need more stuff, you can bring it Parents' Weekend, or he can take it back with him after a holiday.

Syracuse - Parkview Hotel one night

Unfortunately, the bar closes at 9 or 10 depending on the day of the week. Alto Cinco is open until 2 a.m. There is a concert venue next door, so if there is a performance, it might not be a good choice and parking will be difficult.

Picasso's Pastries opens at 7 a.m. and has both coffee and pastries. I'm not sure what Recess's morning food is. In the Westcott neighborhood (Picasso's, Recess, and Alto Cinco are there), avoid Mom's Diner. The food is meh and the coffee is dreadful. Freedom of Espresso, several locations, is good both for coffee and muffiny types of things. If you aren't leaving until later in the morning, Phoebe's, across the street from Franco's, opens for coffee etc. at 10.
