Best Steak - Kansas City

I am a red meat person and the best steak in KC is a very easy call....Capital Grille. No question about it.

Best Hamburger in Midwest

I have eaten burgers all over the country. I've had Booches...great. I stop there everytime I'm in the area. Meers...funky, very interesting place with a nice BIG burger, but it's not great. Cozy Inn...pretty good, but no cheese available...bummer. Five Guys is indeed the best national chain (other than White Castle, which I consider in a category by itself). A great burger that hasn't been mentioned is found in Colo. Springs ONLY: Conway's Redtop. I haven't been there for awhile, but I've eaten it every time in in the Springs and it is fabulous. They steam Velveeta cheese onto the burger and it absolutely melts in your mouth. Town Topic in KC serves up a great greaser. Also, in St. Louis there is an old joint on Manchester called "Carls" and it serves up a mean greaser in a funky oldtime joint that only seats about a dozen people around the countertop.

El Porton Cafe--Leawood KS (JoCo)

Gave it a try this past Thursday with my wife....no one was there but us.

The decor is indeed "chilly" Some of the tables and chairs looked like cheap cafeteria furnishings, but the other 1/2 of the restaurant has decent tables and chairs..but overall a cold environment (with cheap paintings for sale on the walls).

However, the food was very good. Wife had the skirt steak and it was delicious. The sauce was great and the side dishes very satisfying.

I had the Cubano and it was wonderful. The baguette bread was first rate and I really enjoyed it.

We're going back!!! Hope they have beer by then.

1 Week left to Live...one meal each day at a KC Restaurant

For fun, if you had one week to live, and could eat a meal each day at a KC Restaurant, what would you choose?

I'll start:

Mon: The cheese enchiladas with green chile sauce at El Camio Real
Tue: A double cheese burger with fries at 5 Guys
Wed: The philly cheesesteak pizza at Grinders
Thurs: Chicken Normandy at Tatsu
Fri: BBQ Beef sand. and Fries at Bryant's
Sat: Kona crusted Filet with Shallot Butter sauce and Truffle/Parmesan fries at Capital Grille
Sun: Pan fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and sticky buns at Strouds.

Tried Frontier...it has the look of an old steakhouse that I'm looking for...but it was really, really bad.

BBQ in Wichita?

I'm from KC and there is a place (I don't remember the name of it) on 54 hiway as you are heading West out of town (or coming into town from the West). It's just a small joint on the North side of the hiway and it was quite credible...very good.

STEAK HOUSES IN KANSAS CITY AREA

Thanks for the reploy, JD...I, of course, know about these. Perhaps I should be more clear...are there any old/new steak joints that are NOT so well known as the three you mention?
Any hidden gems!!!

STEAK HOUSES IN KANSAS CITY AREA

I love old steak houses (or new ones that have the spirit of the steak houses of old). They have to have that certain ambiance which is ingrained in a great steak house of long standing. And, of course, they have to serve a geat steak and geat sides.

Of course, the geat old steak houses of yesteryear are quickly dying out. Unfortunately, there are not may left. Strouds, while at its soul is a chicken lover's delight, also serves a great steak and, of course, wonderful side dishes. And, even though it has relocated from the original great location, the current joint still has the old-time "Stroud's feel" to it.

Recently, the old Main Street Steak House closed. It had fallen on hard times, causing the food quality to wane, but it was till "old school".

My question: are there any great old steak houses left in KC? Or, are there any great new steak houses in KC which possess that charm and personality of an old steak house?

Look forward to your responses.

Scott

HELENA TO WHITEFISH MONTANA

Will be travelling from Helena to Whitefish, where we will spend about 1 week.

Looking for the very best of:

1) Breakfast Joints...really want "greasy spoon" type "big" breakfast spots...Great omlets and shreddied hashbrowns-type places.

2) Pizza....Love NY style best.

3) Steak Houses....again...the "joints" are the best. Nothing fancy...just great steaks and cold beer.

4) Hamburger Joints.

5) Other "great" restaurants that you favor.

Thanks so much for your help Montanans (and others)!

NEED CLASSIC EXPENSIVE FRENCH (B-Day)

My mother and her husband will be in Montreal in a few days celebrating her 80th birthday. They prefer french served in grand fashion. I am opting to treat them and would like to know the top 3 or 4 french restaurants in Montreal which have historically been deemed the finest over the years and which still retain their quality. Need very very nice and attractive setting/ambiance.

Please help...

Merci,

sk
