Dover Sole
Artisanal has a daily special, I believe on Wednesdays. Never had it, but been planning to take Mrs. Coasts after a failed expedition in Paris.
Josephina and Sushi a Go Go turning into what?
The Smith, opening in fall 2012 supposedly.
Is there ANY decent pizza on the UWS?!
Fratelli la Bufala is now open and has been busy! i'm yet to try it, but did walk in on opening night. Major improvement on the space, as it's almost impossible to see anything remnant of Niko's. Plenty of interesting dishes on the menu, but everything seems to be a few dollars more than desired for a neighborhood place. anxious to try it. anyone been?
Inexpensive lunch near 55th & Lex -- including food trucks
on 53rd bet. 2nd & 3rd, you can choose between Social Eatz (Angelo Sosa's place), Obao (Michael Huynh's place), and Brick Lane Curry, all of which beat Pret a Manger in my book. There's a Grand Sichuan on 55th & 2nd and Melt Grilled Cheese on Lex. and 54th or so. I usually take a salad from Chop't on 56th & Madison. Call ahead if you go, as the line will stretch out the door, especially on Mondays.
Seeking Restaurant very close to Film Forum
Ditch Plains is nearby and within your price range. i haven't always been impressed with their dishes, but some things are just fine.
How long is the wait at Keste pizza?
the crust at Keste is my reason for going there over Motorino. Keste's crust is so chewy and delicisou. if it were gum, i'd chew it all day. i love it. Motorino's crust in comparison lacks flavor.
Chelsea Market
a cup of coffee and a bread from Amy's makes for a nice breakfast on the High Line. on it's own, Chelsea Market might not be a tourist destination, but coupled with the High Line and the Chelsea galleries, it's one of my favorite ways to spend a day. now that Blue Bottle opened their siphon bar on 15th, there's even more reason to go.
Manhattan Fruit Exchange and Dickinson's are reason enough for repeat visits. not much to eat while there, though, besides breakfast and dessert.
Lincoln Center dinner
Both restaurants offer a Pre-theater menu, so I'm not sure how you mean.
Wedding cakes.
we got a Momofuku Milk Bar dulce de leche for our 60 guest wedding. the cake was under $500, but looked like a million bucks.

Dinners this weekend
i can't say enough about Empellon. check pics from a recent meal there (two hours ago).

Now that Del Posto's is $39 for lunch...
Seasonal feels like such a value. each dish is really carefully put together and the desserts never feel like an afterthought. the apple strudel is amazing, but there's a pear option now that's worth trying.
Laduree NYC today or tomorrow opening?
six months later and the novelty has already worn off. i'm not against waiting in line for something special, but i don't appreciate being made a fool of. the staff here works at such a snails pace to ensure that there is always a line. they make such a production out of every order. delicate service and charm may be parisian charm, but this is New York. shove that cookie in the bag and let's get moving. i'm not likely to return any time soon.
Where can one buy candied violets in manhattan?
Laduree candles are upwards of $70! Seventy. Dollars.
Dinner at Kajitsu this month
apparently they haven't settled on an address yet. i was there in late Feb. and spoke with Chef Masato, as well as the newish American woman that's working there. neither could give any insight on the new space, other than to say that it'd be in midtown.
Place to grab treats for a picnic in the park near the Whitney museum?
Eli Zabar opened a takeout place very close to the Whitney. it can't be two blocks south. looked like some very nice sandwiches and such.
UWS restaurants
have you looked at the Garden Room at Gastroarte? there's often discounts available if the price is off-putting.

nice place for drinks, too. i organized a coworkers going away party there and it worked out really well. reasonable prices, good service, and no pressure to order. i didn't get to try much food, but the bites that i did have were quite good.
good coffee in midtown, within a 10 minute walk of 52nd & Madison?
Just opposite Fika is A Kafe. They serve Counter Culture as espresso or through a Clover.

Breakfast
The side cafe at Petrossian is a great place to sit over a pastry and a coffee. It's not a full breakfast, but I like the space. There's also Norma's at Le Parker Meridien.

Joanne Trattoria (W 68th & Columbus)
i also live in the neighborhood and dined at Joanne just a few nights ago at the urging of a friend. i watched as the restaurant was coming together, but lost interest once the menu was posted online. there's so little that sounds appealing.
regardless, we went and had just a terrible evening. we were booked for an early dinner at 5pm, their first seating, and were promptly served the warm focaccia, which was dry from having been overcooked. our party of six reviewed the menu and ordered. had i gone with my gut, all six of us would have ordered one of two entrees - the spaghetti & meatballs or the roasted chicken with sausage. i ordered last and opted for something different - the penne with rabe and a grilled calamari appetizer. the server explained that the calamari would be served fried instead of grilled, which was fine by me. it was good, but only in the way that fried calamari ever is. i've had it as good in bars.
entrees came and were shameful. my penne was bland and just a bore to eat. the spaghetti and meatball dish was plated dry with the sauce poured over it, leaving much of the pasta still plain. it looked fit for a child. two giant meatballs loomed on top. the server must have mistook my wife for a superhero, as he passed her her dish and warned "be careful. it's very hot." i tried the spaghetti and the meatball and wouldn't return for either one.
it's obvious when a table isn't enjoying their meal. no one insisted that anyone try anything or proclaimed how good their dish was. instead, we all commented on other italian places that serve really good food. i asked if anyone had ever been to Scarpetta for their spaghetti. we spoke of a hole in the wall in Queens.
service was laughable. water was rarely filled. wine glasses were never refilled by the staff, only by myself. the server didn't know who ordered what and expected us to grab hot plates from him to pass around the table.
on the positive side, the restaurant has a warm, homey feel and a great smell permeates the space. it'll take more than that to keep the tables full each night though.

try searching the board, as there are many topics just like this one already. that said, look at Boulud Sud. It's fairly new and many dishes are fish-centric.

Empellon Friday
i guess you've already had your meal. i'm just seeing this post now, or would have steered you towards the steak and away from the mushroom tacos. i'm crazy for the queso fundido, but they can make the tacos seem redundant. cocktails are tasty, but not strong. i generally opt for wine, instead. dessert is not to be missed. the tres leches cake has changed, but it's always great regardless of what form it takes. i liked it best when it was served with passion fruit.
Empellon has become one of my favorites. can't wait to try Cocina.

Total absurdity
the rating process in NYC is ridiculous and should not be a consideration to patrons when selecting a restaurant.
Looking for fast crepes to go, Parisian style?
Viva la Crepe just opened on the UWS. there's another one next to Ceci Cela, I think.

Restaurant near W. 71 St.?
fully agree on Cafe RONDA. it is loud and cramped and the food has suffered in the past year or so. i live nearby and no longer eat there. Giardino is fine. Not better or worse than that, absolutely.
i don't know this indie food and wine, somehow...hmmm
