Sunday Breakfast/Lunch/Brunch in Westwood

Takes reservations for breakfast is a tough one, most good b'fast places- that aren't in a hotel don't take reservations and westwood doesnt have much in the way of great b'fast.

Tavern, like Servorg metioned. Farmshop also (a bit further away) takes reservations. The other direction you can try Bouchon.

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

99 ranch still draws me over the hill on occasion, although usually it's more tempting to hit pollo a la brasa and Assi in k-town (not 100 percent overlap I know)

So where did you end up taking your guest and what did they think? Just curious!

Best Chicken and Waffles in LA

YMMV and all that but it would regularly take me 45+ to get to the SMFM from la tijera/405 around 11am by freeway. Which granted is a bit farther, but traffic usually clears up after Centenela. Eventually I switched to just taking the streets.

You do find the best routes by experience but I wouldn't push it if I was on a strict lunch break. The path of least resistence would be Panns or the Culver City area IMO

Best Chicken and Waffles in LA

Those are fantasy drive times, the area around westchester/fox hills/culver city. Can be a real cluster f... getting to that pico/bundy area where Shunji is; even if you know the area well.

Okay so it's not always that bad, but it can be a high blood pressure drive IME driving that way often

Kula - Kaiten Sushi on Sawtelle

The Spanish mackerel was my favorite there and the Albacore was okay, not a fan of the rice- something they at least get right at Nijiya (aside: just like the Buns at Five Guy's- ruins everything they get right) They may have had red snapper I do not recall, but i is not something I'd order at a large chain for fear of getting something like tilapia re-badged. The tuna looked particularly sorry.

Really I didn't hate it and I have nothing against mayo in sushi or otherwise, but for me the bottom line is that it didnt scratch my itch for sushi despite the low price. YMMV.

Help! All I want is Rapini.

Nope. BUT they do carry a great selection of Olive oil in large and small format. 3 or 4 brands of 00 flour. Quite a variety of canned goods, and meats/cheese.

Kula - Kaiten Sushi on Sawtelle

I tried it the other day as well in the name of being cheap. It was okay, but I don't know that I'll be back. I don't see much advantage over just going to Nijiya (which has decent sushi for a market) or sushi stop for that matter.

It was reasonably busy when I went, so everything was fresh. The wait was short and quality was fine, but it helps to like mayo and eel sauce.

Chowhound worthy dinner for a family only night in LA

I am a big fan of short order, but don't forget Short Cake if you are in need of coffee/espresso with some (very) nice pastries. In addition I am a fan of Loteria, which is a bit expensive but pretty good if you are in the mood for tacos or chilaquiles. Monsuer Marcel in the market is a touristy french market BUT they have a nice wine selection mark ups aren't too bad IME.

Your location is fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Just give up on the idea of walking from the hotel and you will be much happier.

PS.. If you brought a suit jacket and can get into the Magic Castle the shows are great! (dinner is just Meh) but the close up magic room can't be beat IMO.

Chowhound worthy dinner for a family only night in LA

Naaaah, LA is not much of a walking city. The hotel you chose is well located to see a lot of stuff. A hotel in Santa Monica is great for seeing and walking.. Well Santa Monica and very inconvienient for seeing LA anything east of Bevery Hills. Especially if you are not very familiar with traffic ect.

Stay where you are, LA is NOT NYC or SF in regards to walkability. We are spread out into lots of mini cities that can be walkable once you drive there!!

Good luck

It's not a great location for walking to good restaurants, but it is a well located for a short drive to: Hollywood, West Hollywood, Fairfax district, Downtown is a short freeway/subway ride away; Beverly hills is not too far.

"Cronuts" in LA?

I have to say that the version of 'Cronuts' at Rockenwagner look really good, I was at the SMFM this morning and just in for coffee so I didn't think to get one.

* Still annoyed I can't see the links to restaurants mentioned on the right side of the thread.*

:(

I really miss that place! you could always count on them to have interesting varieties of fruit and veg at great prices. I hardly went into the dry goods section in the back though.

Bay Cities or M.Marcel is where I'd look off of the top of my head, sorry I can't think of anything more specific. Do you remember the country of origin?

Jonathan Gold's favorite LA Burgers

It is a slight exaggeration of course but he -does- gloss over things like service, cleanliness, decor (and the rest of the menu) ect.. because ultimately they are not as important to him as two or three great and/or obscure dishes from Asia or Italy. That is just his style.

His style is what makes him great and gives me the point of view that he is miss-cast as a reviewer/critic. JG is a food adventurer, Lyricist (I like that), columnist. What I do like about him is really knowledgeable, passionate about what he loves, and it is usually worth checking out a place he likes for that one great dish. Then going out to eat.

I just want to feel that the whole restaurant and that whole restaurants experience has been reviewed.

Got to go my hansom cab is waiting ;)

Jonathan Gold's favorite LA Burgers

It's a westchester institution, very popular but the TGIFriday's comparison is very apt. It does well because the food feels 'safe' decent quality American food and it doesn't really have the competition that it will have in SM. The place feels chain and the last thing I ate there was an over priced 'west LA' Bahn Mi, which whatever but there was no creativity no twist or extra interest to make it special.

I'm sure the SM one will look nicer, but if the menu is the same I would just skip it.

Jonathan Gold's favorite LA Burgers

Either way, both the food and decor scream over priced chain food. The last time I went I had a 'bahn mi' that was not good and 3x the price of Mr.Baguette. If you are going to spin it at least have a point of view and do something interesting with it justifying the price

That is why I like her! She is 'critical' of the food she reviews. Even when you don't agree with her you have been left with enough information to form your own opinion.

JG is a GREAT food writer but a very poor critic/reviews. To me he comes across as a beagle all over the page all slobber. You end up knowing a lot about 3 dishes on the menu, but nothing about the wait service, cleanliness or the rest of the menu.

Really wish SIV would start reviewing again. Yes, i know this is spitting in the wind but she does MUCH better fact based reviews and he would do a great job as a general food columnist, which is almost what he does anyway.

Bring back the stars!
