Def not! I like a heavier batter. My personal favorite is a recipe from Heston Blumenthal with fresh yeast. I get the impression that they use a syphon to make the batter super light which I'm not a huge fan of. I love tempura but when I am craving onion rings I want something a bit more substantial.

Shake Shack is coming

This conversation reminds me of when 5 guys came into town the first time as well. A lot of the same comparisons to in n'out

-1 on the onion rings. Maybe that style is not for me but I didn't like the batter on the fried fish either. I am always on the look out for great onion rings too.

They have a really nice beer selection btw if you are into that and very good bar eating for 1 or two people with nice staff.

Pizza Restaurant Westside?

I've said it before but I sure do miss the old style Maria's pies. The Sunset/barrington location is nice but the pizza just doesn't do it for me anymore

Vicente Foods in Brentwood has a sneaky good Pastrami sandwich

Mine is corned beef on rye. the corned beef is warm and fatty they rye is flavorful. Pickles really crunchy and good (more on the less sour end of pickledom). Great tasting and great value if your on that side of town.

Wally's Vinoteca (Beverly Hills): A Pictorial Essay

Length-wise is correct. Most places will get it off the bone and cut it like ham on a meat slicer. You can usually tell by looking at the fat.

Hipsters on Hillhurst

Not a big fan of Scoops myself, the texture seems a bit icy. Not sure if they are using a lower fat base or? I really enjoy the Ice Cream at Atticus and almost Gelato like texture. Personally Sweet Rose is my all around Favorite though

Sweet Rose is 5$ if you get a made in house waffle cone otherwise it's 4$ a scoop IIRC (I usually get a cone!)

La Ratte Potatoes at stores in L.A.?

For sure, to be clear, that was as aside (because I like them so much) to the main point that Weiser is most likly the only game in town when it comes to La Ratte potatoes.

Personally I use Sierra Gold's from Rutiz Farms for that sort of thing

La Ratte Potatoes at stores in L.A.?

Weiser family farms grows them in Tehachapi. Check which farmers market by you they go to. It is not something that is always in stock so its always best to get a contact with them and reserve in advance if you can.

any rhubarb sightings lately? in desserts/pastries or raw at farmer's markets/grocery stores?

I don't know that it grows well locally, we just don't get enough cold nights or rain. You can find it at the SM FM but they are usually half green even if you manage to get there before it sells out to restaurants
