Opening Night at Cassia by The Spice Table's Bryant Ng (A Photo Story)

Olives are not edible until cured and are usually only available in Fall during the olive harvest. Flora Bella usually has some around that time at the SMFM.

The Dry cured are the wrinkly ones and are my favorites for an intense tapenade

Sushi Tsujita Serving Lunch 7 Days a Week (A Photo Story)

The soup was served first followed by the Chawanmushi Then the Sushi was served on a plate as in the lunch menu picture. Followed by the Hand roll at the end. IIRC I added an extra hand roll at the end.

It is not so many pieces that it suffers from being plated at once IMO. The service here from the staff is among the best I have experienced at a sushi bar btw..

Porcini Mushrooms

Porchini is awesome and great in risotto! Fresh is really hard to find, but dried look in any Bristol Farms or whole foods type place. Surfas carries them in west LA

If you enjoy espresso or siphon brewed coffee check out Balconi on the Olympic side of the Olympic Collection. Unpretentious and excellent.

Top Leaf: A Pictorial Essay

I am not a tea expert but usually you are not going to bother listing place of origin on a tea menu unless you are using something interesting. You should be able to get a couple cups from a tea pot or re-steep. Really it doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

Fine dining in West Los Angeles/Santa Monica

just found out yesterday. I was a perfect cool night for soup as well! The squid was really nice though, fantastic textures.

Top Leaf: A Pictorial Essay

Well I am hoping a place called 'Top Leaf' has some special quality teas. If that is the case then it's not so bad. Assuming too that it comes with a small tea pot as well.

*tring to be optimistic

Fine dining in West Los Angeles/Santa Monica

Not fine dining, but very good. Meat centered, good wine/cocktail list. I went solo, sat at the bar and had an enjoyable time. The french onion soup with oxtail is really good as were the rabbit boulettes

Uh-oh, Bucato

And he was on 'vacation' before he left too, lol so it has been a while. The new Chef Bryan Weaver is quietly doing some very good food there now.

Who makes your favorite naan?

I don't know why it took me so long to try the bread at Naan Hut. WoW! is it good. Light and crispy with so much flavor, I was blown away. Now I am curious to try some of their food as well.

Chowhound's Impression of Popular Food Critics

I do agree with you that the LAWeekly's star system in meaningless, but that is because of their reviewer (who is just okay IMO).

The star system the LAT had under SIV was 'fair and balanced' I always felt if somone rec'd over a 3* that was a chef/restaurant to watch.. YMMV

Chowhound's Impression of Popular Food Critics

I like LA Magazine in general for their food coverage and Patric Kuh in particular. Miss S. Irene V and her restaurant reviews, I always felt whether I agreed with her or not I could measure if I would like a place or not. And Bring back the stars LATimes!

Super Burger - Bang for your Burger Buck

Look at the prices at Fat Burger and 5 Guy's blue collar folks have been paying 6 bucks for a cheeseburger for a long time.

Even a quarter pounder with cheese is about $5 with tax and that is pretty aweful. Prices of meat have been going up for a while.

Connie & Teds

Def not! I like a heavier batter. My personal favorite is a recipe from Heston Blumenthal with fresh yeast. I get the impression that they use a syphon to make the batter super light which I'm not a huge fan of. I love tempura but when I am craving onion rings I want something a bit more substantial.
