BEST DEAL in New Orleans' restaurants?

I love One's happy hour. Scallops, chargrilled oysters, a couple of Onetinis, and fresh baked sourdough bread and you are set.

Coquette's $20 lunch special is also a great deal, as well as August. I am dying to go back to August.

New Orleans on a Budget

For a fancy lunch that is also budget friendly, the 3 course lunch for $20 at Coquette can not be beat. They have drink specials on Wed and Thurs as well. Don't miss it. Seriously.

Other budget friendly options:
Mandina's, portions are huge so you can share an entree; I like their gumbo and poboys.

Cochon Butcher, located behind Cochon is cheaper and better in my opinion. It would make a great lunch or dinner spot. The Cuban is amazing. Don't miss the boudin either.

Bachannal - most unique place in the city. It's a wine store with a great big backyard. You buy your bottle of wine, then get glasses for an extra corkage fee. There is a chef in a truck in the backyard, and live music is back. This is a one of kind experience and is easy on the budget.

Also, Eat restaurant in the Quarter is cheap and fun. I like their brunch.

If you have a smartphone, download the Gambit Weekly's happy hour app. There are a ridiculous amount of restaurants in town with food and drink happy hours. One Restaurant & Lounge is the best, with Domenica a close second.

Enjoy!

Christmas Day late lunch

Great idea! Thanks.

8 Block

The $14 dollar price tag is worth it just for the outstanding dessert bar and yummy meat and cheese area. Overall, an above average buffet which I will definitely re-visit. I work in a building that is connected to the Hyatt though, so that makes it easy.

Vitascope Hall, the sports bar, is terrible (not really I just don't want anyone to know about my secret Saints game day spot. It is really strange but the place is empty during games. I guess most people that go there beforehand are actual ticket holders.)

Just did 17 Gumbos in 4 days

Did you go to my favorite - Mandina's?

Hide your BBQ shrimp! Kukubura's coming back to town!

Check out One Restaurant & Lounge or Dante's Kitchen in the riverbend if you are not going to Brigsten's. I have never been to Brigsten's, so no opinion on that. The other two are fantastic. A forty minute ride from the FQ on the streetcar (very scenic of course so it doesn't feel like a long time), get off right after you turn on Carrolton, and walk up Hampson for One or Maple (and then left on Dante) for Dante's Kitchen.

One has an amazing happy hour with food and drinks half price, so if I were you, I'd get on the streetcar at 4:30, hit up One for the first course (an interesting take on chargrilled oysters, gnocchi to die for, crab cakes, its all good), and then head to Dante's for dinner. Do it.

Also I think you should expand your barbecued shrimp horizons - what about Pascal's Manale?

Hide your BBQ shrimp! Kukubura's coming back to town!

yes. good idea.

Christmas Day late lunch

Locals -

Mom has decided she is on strike this year and will not cook. Where should myself and about seven others go for Christmas lunch? Something casual (read: inexpensive), yet festive. Are any of the hotel buffets any good? What about somewhere that might be a little offbeat and under the radar? Or is there somewhere that is so perfect it is worth a splurge? We will have one child with us, a four year old who is not a terror, but not quite accustomed to sitting down for long periods of time, either.

Thanks!

French Quarter Fest 2011

Yes, Sunday is a terrible time. Friday is the best day because it is not as crowded. I will be there when it opens on Friday. Also, they are adding another day this year, Thursday, which should be nice as well. Saturday and Sunday are ridiculously crowded.

Eloping in New Orleans...please help with budget friendly recommendations

Speaking of coupons, go ahead and sign up for restaurant.com as well, they send 80% coupons all the time. I spent $3 for a $25 gift certificate to Cafe Degas. A cute little French restaurant in a really pretty neighborhood - if the weather is nice they open everything up and it is heavenly.

I always recommend Boucherie. Take the streetcar (it's a long ride, about an hour, but very scenic) if the weather is nice. Get a reservation.

These two are not typical New Orleans places but they would give you a great opportunity to eat really good food at a great price and see some of the prettiest neighborhoods outside of the FQ.

Have a great trip and congratulations!

Whole Foods

I'm a Whole Foods junkie. I mostly buy groceries, though - veggies, cheese, meat and wine - you can't get a better selection under one roof.

Brunch at Dante's

The steak and eggs at Dante's Kitchen is one of my favorite dishes in the world.

Overall, I prefer One or Mat & Naddie's for dinner.

Tuna steaks

Thanks for all the great replies. I wish I had time to go to HKM! I'm going to check out Rouse's on N. Carrolton and then Dorignac's.

Tuna steaks

I want to grill tuna steaks for Mother's Day and was wondering if anybody knew were I can find some as pretty as the ones at Whole Foods but maybe a better price than $19.99/ lb. I haven't checked Rouse's yet.

BTW, Tom Fitzmorris' recipe for grilled tuna and hot slaw is delicious!

Yankee foodies with limited time and limitless appetites

I'm biased against the quarter and in favor of uptown, so my recommendation for Friday dinners are One and Boucherie. Get reservations at either. These places are both casual fine dining with an attention to detail that is on the standard of any of the more sophisticated fine dining places in town. I love taking groups to both. I say take a cab there and get on the streetcar for the ride back downtown to your hotel.

Do a brunch one day - Green Goddess or Eat, both in the FQ, are great.

A Mano or GW Finn's

Congratulations!

85 bucks without alcohol is too much for me, even when splurging. I guess I'll have to wait until I start making the big bucks before I try A Mano. It sounds fantastic.

Partaille's at Bouche

What is the dress code? I'd love to go after volunteering at Wed at the Square but will be in shorts and T shirts.

A Mano or GW Finn's

Or Broussard's? Or Patois?

A Mano or GW Finn's

Which one for my next splurge dinner? I know they are worlds apart. Which one is better for food and which one is better for the overall experience?

This weekend in NOLA, lunches near Loyola, dinners in French Quarter

I go there often, but would never recommend it to a visitor. There are just too many other great places to check out. I would say Mandina's or Liuzza's by the Track for basic New Orleans red beans, gumbo and friend chicken.

Don't miss Cochon Butcher, Green Goddess, Mr. B's for barbecued shrimp, and hit up FQF. Meltdown popsicles for a quick frozen treat.

Have fun! It's gonna be a gorgeous weekend. I hope to make it down to the FQ at some point.

Best Fried Oysters

Is May good for oysters? I'm not sure.

Keep in mind I have never tried Dick & Jenny's or Casamento's oysters. However, I find it difficult to believe they can be much better than the scrumptious fried balls of heaven on the Mat & Naddie's fried oyster salad (the green onion remoulade dressing takes it to a whole 'nother level) or the oysters amandine from Maple St. Cafe. The best amandine in town, no matter if its fish or oyster, in my opinion.

My mouth is watering now. I need oysters!

5 days in N.O.

When are you visiting? if it's any time soon and you are here on one of the gorgeous days we've been having, take the streetcar up to audubon park and do your reading on a blanket there. It's so nice.

I would recommend venturing out of the quarter for a few meals. You can take the streetcar up to Mandina's, or out to the Riverbend and up Carrollton Ave. where there are great places - Boucherie for dinner, Dante's Kitchen for brunch, Camellia Grill and many others.

Also consider Eat (on Dumain & Dauphine in the quarter) for great brunch, ok dinner (I'm a fan but not everyone loves it) and Adolpho's italian (Frenchmen St.) - both are byob so easy on the pocketbook.

Have a great visit!

Wet Dressed, Dressed or Plain?

Dressed means mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and maybe pickle.

There is no such thing as wet dressed.

This is the rule.

Good place to eat within walking distance of Rock 'N Bowl?

Ye Olde College Inn is right there. It's a neighborhood joint with italian food, poboys and a few New Orleans only specialties. Not bad at all.

Best food neighborhood

I have been thinking of spreading my wings and flying to another area of this great city. While I know I will miss a ton of food places around the black pearl (Mat & Naddie's, Dante's Kitchen, Refuel, One, Hopper's Wines, the Tuesday farmers market, Maple St. Cafe, Mona's, Whole Foods and on and on...) I know there are so many out there to discover in mid-city, downtown, the quarter, the marigny, algiers point, etc. So here's my question: Who lives in the best food neighborhood in this city and why?

suggestions for an uptown birthday dinner

I have never been to Gautreau's and have only been to Clancy's once, so can't really comment much on those (Clancy's was too stuffy for me, with stand off-ish wait service. Nothing like what others on this board have experienced).

I think One fits the bill. Certainly intimate because it's so small, and the lighting is great. The food is outstanding and the drinks are top notch. It is easily my favorite splurge dinner uptown, with Mat & Naddie's a very close second. Nonetheless, if by any chance you are going on a nice weather Monday - go to M&N. They have an adorable patio and great band.

At either place, get the oysters. At One get the onetini, gnocchi, trout entree, and the flourless chocolate cake. That cake is to die for if you are a chocolate lover.

Oh and don't forget to tell them it's a special occasion when making the reservation.

Happy Birthday! Don't forget to report back.

Thanks to all you great NOLA Hounds - Reviews of my Mardi Gras Trip.

That is fantastic! Thanks for visiting. Looking forward to the report.

hot Joe/ best coffee roasters in the city please/ best blend to bring home

Speaking of coffee, has anyone been to the Orange Couch in the marigny? We passed by on Mardi Gras day and it looked cool inside.
