Bakeries in Calgary?

Same story with me: former Montrealer longing for great, crusty European-style breads in Calgary. A reliable source (from Quebec!) just tipped me off to a new bakery that she says is excellent: Wilde Grainz Artisan Bakery, 1218c 9th Ave SE in Inglewood. I also second the Manual Latrue mention. Cobbs has a decent multigrain farmer's loaf, but not much else. Their pastries are made with margarine = YUCK! Prairie Mills does a nice sunflower whole wheat bread, heavy, earthy, but their crusty breads are too sour for my taste. Believe it or not, Costco's ciabatta breads are acceptable in a pinch. Brace yourself for a whole new bread culture here. Don't you miss Premier Moisson??!!

Cheap eats in Montreal

A must, and a Montreal institution, is a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's deli on Boulevard St. Laurent. Cheap, succulent, large sandwiches. Fries are the real deal too. Top it all off with a cherr coke. Doesn't get much better than that.

Am I the only one who finds Sweet Republic gelato underwhelming and bland?

Yes, I should have clarified what I ate. Not talking about ice cream. I had the fruit sorbets, pineapple, canteloupe, strawberry and chocolate sorbet. The chocolate was excellent. But the fruit flavours seemed shallow to me, needing more zing. Of course I appreciate the focus on natural ingredients and the care taken to create a high quality product. To be applauded, for sure. Having eaten plenty of excellent artisinal ice cream/gelato/sorbet in Italy and Montreal (Bilboquet - the best!), I was hoping to be swept off my feet and wasn't. Will try some of the recs. And will go back and try some of SR's other flavours. Thanks!

Am I the only one who finds Sweet Republic gelato underwhelming and bland?

Read so much about Sweet Republic, was expecting to be hugely satisfied. Find the flavours lack depth and punch. They leave me frustrated actually, as if I need to keep digging to experience the full, explosive impact. It never happens. Where can I get great artisinal gelato in the Scottsdale area? Hand crafted, DEEPLY fruity, tart lemon, coffee is what I am after. Not basil.

Looking for Best Pizza in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area

We really love Oregano's, the thin charred crust with a hint of chewiness, the interesting and fresh toppings. The salads are wonderful too. Anything else I need to know about for some pizza alternatives? Picazzo's? Grimaldi's? Love the idea of real Neopolitan pizzas but won't wait for hours at Pizza Bianco. Any brilliant ideas? Should I stick with Oregano's? Thanks!

Great Cheap Food in Chinatown needed for my visit

New Yorkophile, please speak to me of these other foods you cite: Mexican, Pizza, etc. I am game. Will walk far. Probably staying in Chelsea. Will ride the subway. Want fabulous, delicious, authentic, cheap food experiences. Ethnic stuff mostly. Outer Boroughs a possibility if it's really worth it. Rather stay in Manhattan as I only have 5 days in NYC. Would go on a trek somewhere to an interesting spot for walking, browsing and eating, not just eating.

Please Update Me on Curry Hill South Indian Options

Ha! I am following this long, convoluted thread and I'm sold on Bhojan but I, too, want to know where I can get a big, fat, crispy-edged masala dosa in the area and you guys seem like the perfect people to ask. Coming to town for 5 days at the end of Sept. and I'm doing lots of homework so that every meal is stellar (and cheap!). Back to dosas, please?!!!

Great Cheap Food in Chinatown needed for my visit

Noodles, Pho, Dim Sum, Schezuan, Dumplings! Looking for value and great quality at bargain prices. Nothing fancy please. Just food that really delivers. Atmosphere and service not important. Just the food counts. Cleanliness would be nice. Coming to Manhattan in September for 5 days and thinking Chinatown is where the deals for meals are. Right? Thanks, folks.

Looking for Best Cheap Eats in Manhattan

Not opposed to taking the subway to Queens for the sake of a great meal, but is Ben's Best better than Katz's? I am not kosher so the kosherness of Ben's isn't a deciding factor. I'm just after an experience that is memorable (and cheap!). I love ethnic markets and would definitely enjoy checking some out.

Looking for Best Cheap Eats in Manhattan

Hi. Will be staying in the upper west side but walking and taking the subway EVERYWHERE in Manhattan; especially willing to go where the great food is. We will have 5 days so will see and do alot. Interested in checking out various neighbourhoods for food and fun as well as seeing the museums. Love walking the streets, poking into interesting shops and little galleries. Food wise, interested in sushi, pizza, pho, coffee, pasta, the best carts, East Indian, dosas, deli, dim sum. We are Canadian and are most interested in little family run restaurants with authentic ethnic food. Looking for value and cheap prices. Nothing fancy or formal or nouveau anything or fusion.

Looking for Best Cheap Eats in Manhattan

Coming to NYC in September and food will be a big part of my experience. Looking for great food and VALUE, including all kinds of ethnic foods, street carts, markets, bakeries, etc. Atmosphere and service don't matter to me - - - - just the food matters! Help make my holiday memorable, fellow foodies! Many thanks.

Best Cheap Eats in NYC in all categories, please!

Coming to NYC for 5 days in September and food will feature large in my plans. Will be walking EVERYWHERE and nothing is too far for great food. On a budget, though and want great food and VALUE. Ethnic is a must, of all types. Want cart food too. Sushi, pho, pasta, dosas, pizza, coffee, baking, markets. Atmosphere and service not important. Just the food matters! Brooklyn and the Bronx not out of the question either if it's worth it. Hard question, but please take a shot at it. Many thanks.

Mexican lunch in Scottsdale?

I quite like Pinata Nueva for Mexican meals in North Scottsdale. Near 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright. Very acceptable, authentic, casual food, big portions, reasonable prices. Huevos Rancheros is always a great bet for lunch if you want a veggie plate but not enchiladas. Trader Joe's rocks!! Restaurant is maybe a 5 minute drive from the Frank Lloyd Wright Trader Joe's!
