Caramel Apples

Whole Foods has caramel apples dipped in chocolate by the chocolate fountain (bakery area). I am sure they would make you a plain caramel one if you asked in advance. Central Market currently has them in the bakery area too (also dipped in chocolate). I can vouch for the Whole Foods caramel apples - I think I had at least 25 when I was pregnant . They will cut it in slices for you too.

New Uchi on the northside?

Thanks for the info Carter B. I know exactly where that is - that is a big chunk of real estate.

New Uchi on the northside?

I was hoping that would be the location too (close to my neighborhood!), but it is going to be on North Lamar somewhere between 40th and 43rd (Central Market area) in 12 to 15 months. The open spots that come to mind are the large empty lot behind EZ's and the now vacant exotic car dealership that is a few blocks north. The N. Lamar location info was verified by the hostess at Uchi. This is Life in Austin blog said the exact location would be between 40th and 43rd in 12 to 15 months.

Crawfish Price Check (and quality)

I had crawdads at Fish City Grill in The Triangle last Thursday. I believe they were $6.95/lb. Not cheap, but I believe they are the only place in town that is currently serving them and I was desperate. I called around and most places said early to mid-February. The crawdads were pretty good. The waitress asked if I wanted them regular or spicy (a nice touch); I opted for spicy. Moderate level of heat - not so bad that your lips become numb. Just right. Out of three pounds, I only had one with a straight tail (dead before it hit the boiling pot - do not eat these). It is annoying to order crawfish and have several that you cannot eat., so I appreciated their quality control.

Soups in Austin

The tomato tenderloin soup at III Forks is my absolute favorite.

Macaroons like the attached photo

I know this is an old post, but I saw French macaroons at Whole Foods this past weekend. They were from an Austin company called Luxe Sweets and located in the bakery section on one of those display islands. I can't remember all of the favors (pistachio, white chocolate orange...), but they were perfectly formed and beautifully packaged. I think they were $10 for around seven macaroons.

Best chocolates/truffles?

I just mentioned this in a previous post, but I love Wiseman House truffles at Gardens or a Oakville Grocery. The boxes at Gardens are nicely wrapped. They are a little on the pricey side, but worth it. Last week I bought a Christmas tree shaped box of Joseph Schmidt truffles (18 large decorated dome-style truffles) as an emergency gift (in case someone gives me a gift unexpectedly).

Chocolate

The truffles that you are thinking of at Gardens are Wiseman House chocolates (made locally in the Hill Country). They are fantastic and definitely my favorite local chocolate. I am not ashamed to say that I ate the entire box by myself. I have also seen the truffles sold individually at Oakville Grocery in the Domain.

Name this candy: apricot paste with pistachios

Thank you all - I am almost positive that Aplets or Cotlets is the candy that she is referring to. I vaguely remember that they were dusted in powdered sugar and the picture on the website looks right.

Name this candy: apricot paste with pistachios

The one item that my grandmother wants for Christmas is some sort of candy that she described as "apricot paste with pistachios cut up in little squares". I am pretty sure this exists (as odd as it sounds) because I have very vague childhood memories of her eating this candy. Can anyone tell me what this is called and where I can buy it?

Cupcakes! Or great Bakeries in Austin...

I totally agree. Upper Crust's marble cupcakes are incredible - that little nugget of chocolate...Yum! This is the one item that has tempted me to write in to Bon Appetit and ask for the recipe. Upper Crust already gave out their recipe for their black gold chocolate cookies, so it is not likely that they would give out another popular recipe. : (

Favorite Soup?

If I could eat the Tenderloin Tomato Soup at III Forks every day, I would.

I also have the recipe (but have not yet made it):

take out for thanksgiving?

I am getting Thanksgiving takeout from Hyde Park Bar and Grill for my grandmother. I have had their Thanksgiving meal before and it was good. It is quite a bit of food for around $16 or $18 (dessert is $2.75 extra). They also have a vegetarian option and it is priced a few dollars less. They start serving at 11am and stop early evening (can't remember the exact time) - definitely call first.

Restaurant for big family dinner?

My extended family will be in town this December to celebrate my grandmother's 96th birthday and I would like for all of us to go out to lunch (preferably) or dinner. The group will be around 15 adults and 7 children (ages 1 - 8).

My ideal restaurant would be somewhat centrally located, not too expensive (I would like to keep it under $500), have an area that we could all sit at one big table (preferably off to the side or in a seperate room) and (most importantly) I would need to be able to set up a reservation in advance (I am sending out invitations). Any recommendations?
