Chicago hotdogs in Center City?
Moe's on Washington & Gray's Ferry has them (and all kinds of stuff) Also Yo Dogs in Wyndmoor. (about 20 min outside the city)
starr's Square Burger has a sort of Philly / Chicago dog thing going on.
Or for some good philly hot dogs, might want to check out Johnny's Hots and Paesano's
Bistrot La Minette
As far I as can tell, nowhere does Bibou advertise itself as a "Bistro"..
although plenty of writers and yelp reviewers have referred to it as such..
Hot Dogs in Eastern PA
Scranton area has lots of "Texas Weiner" style hot dog joints.
Also Easton has its own style of hot dogs that they call "mop dogs" which usually involves a pickle. Again Hollyeats.com is the best source of information on this (especially the mop dogs)
Charlie's Pool Room, across the river from Easton is Alpha, NJ is worth visiting (also on Holly's site)
Unstellar Stella? Pizzareria Stella Revisted.
Really? I loved Stella. Yes the dough was not crisp / soggy in the middle but the flavor combinations were awesome.
I put them a few notches above Osteria and Batali's Otto in NY, but as far as I'm concerned Tacconnelli's is better than all 3. Maybe not in terms of fancy toppings (the truffle pizza at Stella is INCREDIBLE) but just in terms of sheer consistency.
No neighborhood bias / loyalty here either, I ate at all 4 of these places within a 2 month period.
Slice can be great or terrible. Inconsistent. For non-thin crust, Franco & Luigis is terrific.
Best Cheesesteak in Philly
George's on the west side of 9th street in the italian market
Where does one draw The Scrapple Line?
A country dish that came about as a way to make the most from what you have, it's really almost a Pennsylvania Dutch terrine.
I don't get the aversion to eating "weird" parts of an animal, if you're going to eat meat might as well eat the whole thing.
I think having no idea what goes into your food (fast food and pre-packaged whatever) is a lot scarier that eating some ground pig nose.
1st-time visit to Chicago Chinatown... must-try recommendations?
I was there last year. thought the same thing. Like a ghost town. Awesome place to shoot photos or a movie but not to eat, especially coming from the east coast.. even Philly's Chinatown is more active & interesting.
Out of the Way Philly Restaurants I Like
Southwest Philly African Food sounds awesome... I get really excited when food writers are willing to explore beyond center city and the usual... there's really a LOT of food in this city that has yet to be written about. Like-
Port Richmond/Fishtown Polish - bars and pierogies and etc
North Philly - BBQ trucks and Korean way North, almost suburbs
Kensington/Northeast - cuban/puerto rican/etc
Essington- pizza shops, apparently they invented the Stromboli Here??
Oregon Ave- might be some gems to seek out, buy crabs on the street, etc
Cambodian/Indonesian- Definitely a 2nd for Indonesia on Snyder. That whole neighborhood , as far north as Tasker, on the west side of broad, has TONS of combodian/indonesian grocers and markets and a few restaurants, and I think even one that also has mexican products, so maybe some wild fusion going on....
The best authentic pizza in the Philly area
actually I lived in NY for 5 years.
and while there must be a few places to seek out that are really great.. I just don't get what all the fuss is about. Most of the pizza places I walked into off the street are mediocre at best, dirty garlic shakers covered with grime and a bum in the corner gripping a bottle of port wine.. Most of that stuff couldn't hold a candle to the average south philly pizza shop.

Where does one draw The Scrapple Line?
Scrapple also goes pretty far south into Maryland and DC.
pat's or geno's???
I had both 2 hours apart once. Liked Pat's better. Geno's meat (at least on that day) was in bigger chunks, and came falling out of the bun when I ate it.
Pat's meat was chopped more (but not shredded like some) and good balance of stuff.
I finally had a Cheesesteak and Roast Pork from George's (on the west side of 9th street) and I have to say, might be one of the best of both, definitely one of the best Roast Pork.
The best authentic pizza in the Philly area
Brick Oven / Thin Crust-
Tacconnelli's
Slice (tried both. South Philly location is better, My dough from Rittenhouse branch was chewy, actually hard to eat, like stale bread, weird)
NYC "fold-over" style-
How about Lorenzo's on south? Thats as close to NY as your gonna get. Lotsa drunk people, giant slices to fold in half.
I like Lazaro's but they have a sweet sauce.
Sicilian-
YES to La Rosa, on Broad & Snyder, awesome, no frills.
South Philly-
Franco & Luigis, always fantastic
Seattle delicacies
YES to the cream cheese hot dogs!

hot dogs from jewish delicatessens
After reading about Starr's salami-wrapped hot dogs at franklin square, I was surprised to learn that kosher hot dogs wrapped in fried baloney is a common thing at Jewish delis in Baltimore.
Anyone know where to find one of these in the Philly area??
