Donatos Pizza, Toms River CLOSED! No more meatballs?

So disappointed. very nice people - amazing meatballs and good gravy.
If you know the Donatos. Tell them

Mike from Philly, Meatball parm with Fried Onions. Is missing them.

Joy Tsin Lau, Dim Sum, Not so hot.

Really not so hot as in many of the items were barely warm and the chicken feet, well cold chicken feet are not really a good thing. Yes, I sent them back only to get another that was barely warm. Same with the tempura whole shrimp.
Food was only OK.
This was the first time I have been here when it was not busy, In fact only 1/2 the tables were seated and it was 12:30. Maybe that should have been my first clue that something has gone wrong here.
Finally the threadbare FILTHY carpet really turned me off, if they are not taking care of something like that in front what must be going on in the back?
Disappointing visit overall.

Restaurant Supplier open to public

REAL, HUGE, AMAZING

I have been driving past "Benjamin Foods Supply" in Willow Grove for weeks wondering what it was.
Today as I was going by I see "OPEN" and "SALE" banners out at the sidewalk, I go in;

Wow, 200,000 sq ft of honest to goodness real restaurant equiptment, supplies and food, in my backyard. Who Knew? and Open to the PUBLIC.

I assume that lack of interest here shows a lack of interest there.
Well let's throw it out there again and see if we get any bites.

Best Hot Dogs In Montgomery County PA?

The Last Stand-- I just "found" it yesterday.
I just started working at 420 and Baltimore Pike. I wanted Charlies Hamburgers and they were closed for vaca until 1/11.
Lo and behold thanks to no leaves on the trees I could see THE lAST STAND.
I ordered 2 specials and a Birch beer from the tap.
Very good grilled dog on a nice fresh slightly steamed 'not soggy' bun good mustard, the right amount of chopped onion and a slather of their "world famous sauce". The sauce was the traditional finely ground meat chili. Could have been a tad spicier got a little lost with the mustard and onion. Still the best dog I have had at a good price $1.75 in a long time.
Birch beer was good, but not sure it was anything special that needed to be on a special tap, then again thats what sold me.

Taco Truck on top of Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting?

went there Tues after seeing these posts--meh- not great- the fish was the best but thats not saying a whole lot, the pork and beef needed some fat. As soon as you started to chew and the little bit of sauce was gone it dried out. Maybe its not authentic but some shredded lettuce or napa and some diced tomatoes would have helped a lot.

Am I alone here: underwhelmed by Zahav?

Nope! Not Alone anymore. My daughter and I had a "date" there for lunch. Going "to the city" is big deal. We did not have negatives. But definetly found out we are not small plate people. We confirmed that with a dinner trip to Distrito. Portions too small to enjoy, really taste and hard to share a winner. when you get a loser you feel extra disappointed. AND they are not Cheap. We had to order "seconds" at Disitro and left with plenty of room, barely enuf cash, to spare for Capogiro ice cream YUM!

Maryland style crab in greater Philadelphia area

Trevi in Glenside - at last, something good in the 'hood!

Mrs and I went tonight, hoping for the best. Hoping for a good vibe and real good food. (Arpeggio) Well.. they have a lot of room for improvement as they gain experience.

The decor is very nice, new. clean and fresh. But, the beautiful old world style painting of the Trevi fountain and the nice hardwood floors also meant a good bit of noise bouncing off those plaster walls and wood floors. Maybe thats why there was no music? The room was begging for, carpet, drapery, something to absorb the noise and add some cozy warm ambiance.
The table setting was spartan ,black top, knife,2 forks, a nice cloth napkin and a 6" plate (which was the only plate we had for our bread and then our entree pizza. Oh and a rose bud in a water glass. How about a cruet of olive oil (it would have helped make up for the 6 slices of hoagie roll and foil wrapped butter in the bread basket,1970?), a pepper grinder, a candle?

We were still recovering from Easter so we ordered light, she had an Arugula salad, a good handfull of fresh arugula, 7 marinated cherry tomatoes, and 6 pcs of candied walnuts with a standard, raspberry vinagrette. Pretty good, as it was in 1980, but not at $7.

We shared the evening 12" pizza special,$13, red pepper, red onion and anchovey. The crust is rustic and thin and crispy, really good, the marinara red sauce was well done with a nice fresh flavor. the red peppers and onions were fine, the anchoveys a little disappointing, I was hoping for fresh filets or some special brand, but it was just a small bit of haphazerdly placed pieces out of a can or jar, same old....
. The limoncello cheesecake was very good.

Our waitress Jill, was cute, young and perky. It was fun to watch her, go, stop, mentally go thru her "checklist", remember the next step and go again. She got everything right and will smooth her service with a little time. We were expecting shakers of oregano, peppers, cheese etc to be brought to the table . instead Jill had asked we wanted any, when we asked for cheese she grated it behind the counter into a little 4oz bowl, If I had sneezed goodby cheese, why didnt she bring the grinder to the table? Even better bring the grinder and leave it!

Inexperience or too thrifty management?

We will be going back again, perhaps our ordering a little more adventurously with their charcuterie or pasta will get us from good to Wow! ?

Cape Cod or Maine?

Maine
The Ralph Waldo Emerson Inn a B&B in Pigeon Cove just above Rockport Mass. near Gloucester is a great stop over.

Morels at Russos: Spring is definitely here

Where is this, please. Mapquest shows a Russos in weymouth

Trevi in Glenside - at last, something good in the 'hood!

We live in Glenside and are so excited to see these great reviews. We drive out to Arpeggios too often.
I Just spoke to the owner;
.their Web site is under construction.- the menu can be seen on Facebook link.
I told her about Chowhound.- NOT wood fired, but she said they have the best top quality very old ovens that turn out great "old school" pizza.
Not open for lunch, yet.
Not open Mondays.

I'm thinking of putting the pork chops back in the freezer and taking the family tomoro.

Shad

Went to Grobens Seafood in Mt Airy today.
Haven't been in a few years and its only 15 min.
Why do I go to a supermarket? DUH!

Great place, Limited selection which is GOOD as they only handle FRESH NOT FROZEN fish filets and whole fish.

I took my daughter (21) as she is just expanding her tastes toward fish.
Clyde, the counterman was great. He gave her a tour of all the fish, describing and explaining the differences and then ran down a list of prep and recipes and even wine pairings. She got a small fillet of Perch which we pan sauted in butter and a dash of lemon pepper. She loved it. My FRESH shad fillet had NO fish smell and was perfect under the broiler.

Shad

thats what i was afraid of.. not fresh -- i was gonna ride down to Samuels or Ippolitos just to be sure it was fresh -- oh well.. I will give it another try. BUT not from a supermarket

Shad

We got 2 roe sets, $9.95 per set, our first Time< and a fillet from Giants in Willow Grove.

After looking over many recipes for the roe - I gently poured boiling hot water over them to set the skin, dried then poached in bacon fat and butter.

I was very careful just to cook thru, like medium not rare or well,
MEH,!
kinda disappointing.
Shad fish taste but Liver texture and undertones.
Is this right?
They were a very dark maroon color, I read on sites they can range in color from pink to dark red, But maybe mine were not fresh?

We broiled the fillet, as we have done many times, and it was great.

Corned Beef Test Results.....Slow Baked and a Braise, For St. Paddy's Day.

OH Yes! There are several recipe sites for turning corned beef into "ultra Fast" pastrami. I have tried them both. Go to ABOUT.Com. search for pastrami recipe, you will see a chef turn a store bought corned beef into Pastrami in the oven. Then on a BBQ site you will see recipes to use a smoker to do it. - I will try to post links to both.

As you will discover the brine used in almost all store corned beef is exactly the same as the brine called for in almost all Pastrami recipes, WITHOUT the 3 day to 6day brining process.

Oven- take a store bought corned beef, throw away the spice packet, soak it for a couple hours changing the water 1X. Rub it with a combination of , 3 TBS cracked black pepper, 3TBS ground/cracked coriander, 1 TSP red pepper flakes, 1 TBS SMOKED Papricka.

wrap it 5 X in tight foil, yes 5. you are steaming it.. after 5 hrs it should be tender. if you like a firm spice layer put it unwrapped under the broiler for a few min. VERY hard to wait but it is better and easier to slice next day. We never wait.. LOL

Smoker-- same prep and rub as above - drop the smoked paprika, I just do 1/2tsp. - Smoke at 250 +/- 3 -4 hrs check for tenderness. DO NOT use Brisket time. The brineing process makes it a lot more tender and much less time than a brisket.

Oven method is super easy, meat is more traditional. More juice and fat retention
Smoker method is super tasty but you lose a lot of weight, Really shrinks, fat renders down for flavor but you wont feed as many people, get 2 we do, lol

Seriously there is so much shrinkage either way, it is so delicious you cant keep your hands off, IT IS just as easy to do 2.

cape me this weekend! oysters, seriously, just oysters!

If you don't mind a little drive. You are only 10 miles from oyster central. About 10 miles up river from cape may is Port Norris. Once the largest packer of oysters on the east coast. Lots of oyster history if you wicki it.
There are about 20 oyster boats still working the delaware river for "delaware salts". There are 4 oyster packing houses and some will sell 1/2 bushels. Call Hillard Bloom Packing. 856.785.0120. If they don't they will know who does sell retail. Also they should know what restaurants and bars to rec.

Shad

Anyone?

Lent fish fry in Philadelphia?

YEAH!
We always wish for a good reasonable fish place esp one that does a Fri fish fry....just doesnt seem to be.

Kinda like trying to find a nice "American" food restaurant with a decent ambiance and reasonable price. Seems like its either a diner or $30 entree.

My guess is Pasta and Rice are more profitable.

Shad

Posting this up again for the new 2011 season. Anyone have something or somewhere new to add?
I saw the Seafood America in Paoli has just put out a sign for Roe. anyone been? price?
I had some pretty fresh bone in fillets from Giant in Willow Grove about a week ago. Price was right 3.99 @lb. I gotta agree with DelucaCM, Boneless almost always seems less fresh, which doesnt make sence as it should be the faster "mover"..and we just barely broil it with butter and a sprinkle of old bay or paprika, we dont mind "pickin da bones"

Shad roe

We had some fillets from Giant supermarket about a week ago. We did not see roe and I do recall last year many markets esp the supermarkets were not carrying it as it is not popular enough. Wegmans had it last year BUT they wanted $11.99 EACH pair, not per pound, No thanks.

salt baked squid

You fans must check out my review of Mings in Hatboro. Their dry roast squid blew away peking ducks SBS.

Mings Noodles and Dumplings, Hatboro

My son and I picked up my daughter from work in Willow Grove. Our intent was Pho at Pho and Beyond. We didnt know they closed at 8 on Sundays. But our disappointment turned into an excellent late dinner in Hatboro. I and my son have been here 2 or 3X for lunch and we always were very pleased. Yet we seem to forget about it when choosing a dinner spot. No more. And probably a few less trips to Chinatown.

We arrived at 8:50, nervous as we had called ahead and knew they closed at 9:30. We shouldn't have worried the young waitresses and a nice young man (probably the chef) greeted us warmly and we had the place to ourselves.

They make their own pasta for the dumplings and noodles. We went right for the traditional wonton soup. A very good rich broth with perfectly done wontons. They are the thick wrappers, I believe hong kong style, and while I prefer the thin skin we find in chinatown, as most suburban wontons are too thick and chewy or overcooked and flabby., these wrappers were so fresh and well cooked we all loved them.

We then had the Dum[pling Combo, 3 each of pork, veg, shrimp and chicken. Just right, 1 for each of us. The fillings were all very good. The right texture of finely minced and seasoned filling well packed into the dumpling, but not so much that there was any doubt they were hand made. The wrappers were as perfect as I have had. Just thin enough to hold its shape. Large enough to be almost 3 bites and I have to use the word fluffy as I cant think of how to better describe the overall feel of them.

As it was late we ordered only 1 main dish, The Dry Roasted Squid, thinking it would be a single person portion that we would share. Well...out came a Very large portion of the THE best squid we have had. We had just been to Peking Duck House last Tuesday and had the salt bake squid, This blew that away. When I said just that to the waitress she was so pleased she ran back to the kitchen to tell the chef.

Large pieces big enough for 2 or 3 bites. fresh squid just at that cooked but still crunchy chewy crisp state. The breading similar to but was lighter than any General Tso's I have had. The seasoning was a very light sauce that the morsels had been tossed in just before serving, Again like a General Tso , but much lighter not syrupy. Lite Sweet spicy with ginger, garlic and szechuan pepper. We were scooping up the little bits of fond left on the platter.
This is a "Go TO' every time we go.

Heading down to Ting Wong 2/9. but it may be awhile before we "need" to get our fix in Philly.

Anthoy's Coal-Fired Pizza: Horsham

Just went there thursday night. I have to agree with foodie 527. Not only was it burnt cardboard but my fingers were black from (I assume ) the coal dust.. I did not like the flavor that I would attribute to the coal and I found the sauce and meat balls kinda bland. Like a chain that is trying to please everyone. The wings which were just oven roasted and lacking seasoning were good, the carmelized onions they spoon over top seem to be an after thought to get $8 for a plate of ok wings. Back to Arpeggio.
