Moonpie's Profile
Baltimore breakfast sweets
The Fractured Prune has a location on Harford Road. Donuts are made as you order, so always hot.

Drop Your Businss Card in the Bowl....[Moved from Chains]
Have you ever dropped your business card in the bowl at a restaurant in hopes that they will draw your name for the complimentary office lunch?
I do this periodically and have gotten a platter from Chick-Fil-A and also a nice spread from Baja Fresh for my office.
I recently dropped my card in the bowl at Noodles & Company and was surprises when I received an email advising that I had won some dishes for my office. I just needed to let them know how many people they could expect.
I wrote back with thanks, advising that we were small, with only 7 employees, but I due t the wording of his email, I could not tell exactly how this would be handled. Do they just select some items or do we put together a list of our desired entrees and come pic it up, or what?
Their response was that I could come by and pick up a couple of free dishes that they pick out, but they would actually like to invite the entire office to come to the restaurant.
Now I appreciate the fact that they are trying to promote their operation, which is the whole point of the food giveaway, but do they really think that we can shut down the whole office just to come to Noodles & Company to eat?
Am going to reply to their email and stress my appreciation of their generosity, but a "couple" of dishes may not be enough for everyone to share and unfortunately, we are not able to shut down for a lunch away from premises.
Just thought this was a little different expectation on their part, but perhaps I am looking a gift horse in the mouth.
your local "waffle house" -- tell us about the experience
Yeas ago while on a road tripwith a very early start, we pulled into a Waffle House about 5:30 in themorning. The cook was outside, sharpening his knives on the concrete curb.
Scattered and smothered please!
Key Lime Pie
I am the unofficial baker for the office celebrations and this year my boss states he would like a Key Lime Pie for his birthday. I am not a huge fan of this desert and therefore have trouble discerning various recipes to determine which would be most authentic.
I know Key Lime pie is not supposed to be lime colored and usually has a graham cracker crust, but does anyone have any suggestions or a tried and true recipe they would not mind sharing?
Thanks!
Top Chef Fantasy Game
I'm in.
Thanks for setting this up!
(However, the site could make it slighty easier to figure out!) ;-)
food prep tragedies
In college, so very careful with the pennies as they did not go very far at all. BF at the time, passed a major exam and brought some ribeyes over to my dorm room to celebrate. Limited to only an even at the time, we set it to broil and walked down the hall.
Short time later we went back into the community kitchen to check on the steaks and saw that they were on fire!
In my panic, I pulled the fire extinguisher and put the fire out. We looked at the steaks that didn't seem to be so bad with the exception of the powdery residue from the CO2 (completly covering the steaks).
We decided that they probably were ok, so scraped the powder off and proceeded to eat the steaks and then commenced to burping all night!
Chilean Sea Bass - how to cook this fish?
I usually dust with flour, place in hot saute pan for a quick sear on both sides (appx 2 minutes per side); cover the pan and finish in the oven.
Side note: I usually also dust with Black and Red seasoning from Penzys before adding to the pan.
Office Gift--Eastern Shore
Will be going to Eastern Shore next week to make sales calls. Would like to bring something to one of my clients, but not sure what is available. Any suggestions for good bagles, donuts or pastries?
Will not have access to a refrigerator (will be there all week and this particular appointment is not until Wednesday morning), so will have to pick it up Wedneday morning.
I am staying in Salisbury, the meeting is in Willards, and I can make a reasonable drive if needed.
Thanks!
Mick
Anyone been to the new Wegman's???
No wonder the Fairfax store gets so crowded!
In all seriousness, I have almost stopped shoppng at Wegman's unless I can get there etremely early in the morning. Otherwise I tend to get frustrated at the traffic jams with the shopping carts (and whoever invented the &*(*@&( carts shaped like a car for kids should be shot!).
Desperately Seeking Aunt Jemima Buckwheat Pancake Mix
Try www.hometownfavorites.com
They show stocking a 2lb box for $3.30.
Have ordered from them before; its fun reliving my youth, especially in their candy aisle!
Solo Dining in White Marsh, MD
Will be in the White Marsh area of Northern Baltimore next week and would likerecs for dining. Hotel is located near the White Marsh Mall, and prefer to stay away from Olive Garden, Don Pablos, etc.
Any suggestions that don't require a great deal of driving and confortable for a single female?
Thanks!
Chicken and Dumplings - Loudoun/Fairfax County?
I have never had anything but breakfast while on the road, but a friend just mentioned that Cracker Barrell has great Chicken & Dumplings.
Looking for traditional southern new years day meal in DC...
I bet Gladys and Ron's Chicken and Waffles in Largo, MD will have something (East Capitol Boulevard). They even offer a 10% discount to VA residents (I guess for makin the drive).
Have not eaten there, but being a Southerner, the menu makes me drool at times.

Freezing Rugelach?
What a great idea! My last batch were extremely varied in size from rolling out the discs...........will definately try this next time.
Manassas Dinner Party Group
Jake's is no longer. Can't think of the name of the replacing restaurant, but will post tomorrow as I pass by there on the way to work.
IMO, Manassas does not have a large offering, but agree with either Carmello's or Paninos for Italian and Siam Classic on East Street (in Old Towne) for Thai. There is another Thai in Old Towne, but I refuse to eat there on principle as I stopped by one day to pick up a "to go" order and the bar was nasty as it was stacked up with all of the bused dirty plates from lunch and this was at 2:00 in the afternoon.....just seemed dirty to me at the time.
Have not eaten at Foundation, but have heard nice things. Costco even has gift cards for Okra's/Foundation....... $100 gift card for $80.
Mail order crab cakes
Not sure if they do mail order, but when I am in Baltimore making sales calls, I always stop at the Sea King (hole in the wll kind of place, but GREAT crab cakes) and pick up a dozen or so. The 10 ounce jumbo lump ones run around $11 each.

Regional Cakes
I recall my grandmother making the Lady Baltimore cake with the Lord Baltimore filling. She was originally from Virginia, but lived in SC for 50+ years.
Most of the cakes I think of as being southern, probably are not in their original form---such as a whipping cream pound cake (yummmmmmm), earthquake and dump cakes. I tend to think of pies as more regional than cakes, so have found this to be an interesting topic.
Anyone order from the Popcorn Factory?
I have never ordered from them, but our office receives several tins a year from one of our clients. Presentation is always very nice, popcorn tastes as fresh as possible (considering). The tins are also great and we have to draw names to see who gets to take the empty ones home.
Foster's Grille "Home of the Charburger" Now Open in Chantilly
I like that they will cook the burger medium so that its not dried out. In addition, have found that the kid's size is usually enough to be fillling.
Clemson Blue Cheese
Clemson graduate here (alas, back in the 80s) and recall the history of the cheese curing at the Stumphouse Tunnel in nearby Walhalla, SC. Have purchased it at grocery stores in Greenville, SC (8 O'Clock and Fresh Market) in the past, but have certainly missed it since moving to VA.
Have introduced it to Maytag fans who felt the Clemson Blue Cheese was comprable, if not better in some aspects.
Help Me Like Sam's Club
The main difference for me in Sam's verses Costco is the book selection. Other than that, I think Costco wins handsdown.
Fave Markets/Grocers that are seen on Food Shows?
While I don't have access to a Fresh Market here in Northern Virginia, I still like the store (somewhat expensive however), which is where a lot of the shopping on Top Chef occurs. www.freshmarket.com
Have also seen Alton at the Fresh Market and Whole Foods in Atlanta.
Top Chef Bait & Switch
I agree 100% Mojo! Any professional knows that when they have to jump in, its just part of the job. So they were disappointed that they were not going out to party afterall, its a contest and the women needed to adjust their attitude quickly and make the best of it. If they were uncomfortable in how they were presenting themselves as chef's, then perhaps they nee to rethink their time on the show.
(Female here by the way and had to jump behind the bar in heels and "play clothes" when an emergency came up.) You just suck it up, make the best of it and laugh about it later.
How Does Subway Stay in Business?
The few times I eat at Subway, I order to vegetarian---just "cheese," lettuce, tomatoe, black olives, SP and vinegar. Its frustrating, for as much as they charge for this, they will only place 5 olives on the sandwich!
Sysco in Elkridge, MD
I will be in Elkridge, MD for business soon and was thinking of stopping at the Sysco Retail Outlet. Can someone advise what may expect to find there? I checked their website, but it really just shows a map and advises they have napkins and plastic cutlery. Do they have kitchenware? foods?
Thanks!
HOTDOG showdown
I second the Dietz & Watson dogs. Good flavor and great "snap." If I can't find those, Boar's Head are second choice. BH used to be my favorite, but I overdid it on those, so now I alternate.
