Help! Where can I find Tasso, Boudin and other Cajun products in Dallas?
I love Heberts. In fact, I moved from Houston to New Orleans in 2008 and found that the "best" cajun stuffed chickens in New Orleans WERE IN HOUSTON. My New Orleans friends hated that. lol. My NOLA native husband was quickly convinced and was soon returning from our Houston visits with an ice chest full of products from HEBERTS. I am now in Dallas and would love it if Heberts would open a store here.
New Brennan's Restaurant in Heritage Plaza?
Anyone know anything about the new Brennan's restaurant "Heritage Grill" at Heritage Plaza in Metairie? I think it is in the old Chops location.
Chili in NOLA?
....or drive to Texas.
Lots of great food here but there seems to be a shortage of chili, southwestern/mexican and bbq options. Savor those while you are out of town and focus on more traditional New Orleans fare.
You guys aren't going to like this...
Moved here from Houston and I couldn't agree with you more, Fish. I've been here two years and am thrilled when we travel --- We have gone to Houston, Scottsdale, LA, Orlando and NYC this year and they have helped me feel less deprived.
Orchid fried rice @ Pho Orchid
We ate there for the first time tonight and really enjoyed it. I had the pork pressed vermicelli entree and my husband had the pork bahn mi and a grilled pork with vermicelli and egg rolls. Thumbs up on all three counts.
We have typically gone to Pho Nola for bahn mi in the past but this will be our new preference as the boba tea blender at Pho Nola has been running nonstop the last two times we have gone and it was very difficult to hear each other over all of it's noise. Atmosphere at Pho Orchid was really nice.
Parkway Bakery
Go with your instinct but I would probably just take a cab instead - nobody else is apt to be so blunt but that is my honest opinion. Parkway poboys, however, are well worth the cab fare.
Seafood Market: Best Fish Selection?
I am trying to find a local seafood market that has a good selection of fresh fish. The ones near my house primarily sell shrimp, crab, oysters and crab. Any suggestions?
Korean BBQ?
Is there a korean bbq restaurant in Covington called "Far East BBQ?" If so, has anyone been there?
I used to go to Gimchi, but it went out of business. I have been to Korea House but was only mildly impressed.

Help! Mexican food
Not impressed by El Gato Negro. Actually sent a margarita back...dishwater tasting to me. I moved here from Texas 2 years ago and have struggled to find similar Mexican/TexMex. Superior Grill is okay. Taco San Miguel on Severn in Metairie has authentic South Texas Tex/Mex. Not sure about their margaritas. Of the 4 restaurants you listed, I like Felipes. Definitely above-par compared to our other local offerings.

Turle, alligator, nutria meat in New Orleans-- 9th ward
Wow...nutria? As in, to eat? Seriously?
I think I'll pass.
New Orleans Restaurant to Hide and Not be Seen
I appreciate where you two are coming from Bill and CajunGirl....
My husband and I have the same "relatives to be avoided" dilemna....only we LIVE here. lol
We sometimes try to throw them off by saying we are going to a decoy restaurant and keeping our actual dining destination under wraps. It works most of the time, although there have been some awkward moments for sure.
Best Banh Mi?
Followed the suggestion of one of the previous posts and went to Pho Nola over the weekend. We ordered the combo bahn mi and it was excellent. I never would have even noticed the restaurant if I was just driving by. It is at the corner of Transcontinental and Veterans...on the diagonal across from the Target. It is in a tiny strip center next to a little asian market. The food was great, service wonderful and atmosphere contemporary and clean. A definite do-over.
Help! I have 15 minutes to come up with a good restaurant for salad,
Thanks everybody for responding. Time to broaden my husband's horizons and restore my culinary sanity! :-) Looking forward to checking your recommendations out.
Help! I have 15 minutes to come up with a good restaurant for salad,
well...we are leaving to go eat now. If anyone hears screams coming from the Metairie area, it will be me.
Anyway, I'm still open for recommendations...
Otherwise, I'm apt to be back at New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood again over the weekend.
Please help me. :-)
Kolaches
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I am going to check them out this weekend. :-)
Help! I have 15 minutes to come up with a good restaurant for salad,
If I can't come up with an alternative in the next 15 minutes, I'm going to have to eat at New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood AGAIN.
My husband likes to eat salads for dinner 4 or 5 times a week. When we decide to go out for dinner, he defaults to New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood.
I am relatively new to the New Orleans area and don't know my options.
I will scream if I have to go to NO Hamburger & Seafood again.
Please...we are leaving for dinner in 15 minutes and I need some good alternatives. He prefers big dinner-sized salads in the Metairie area.
All I can think of are Zea's and Houston's and both of them are likely to have an unacceptable wait.
Help!!!
Kolaches
Does anyone in New Orleans make them? Fruit or savory. I would settle for either.
Local Knife Sharpening Service?
My only experience with Alpine is that they could use a refresher course of friendly customer service skills. I went to inquire about the lifetime warranty on one of 12 shun knives that my husband purchased there in 2009. It developed a chip in it. Anyway, the two guys working that day were unfriendly and seemed totally annoyed to provide me with the Shun 1-800 number...which sort of surprised me since (a) our total 2009 knife purchase was well over $1000 and (b) while they were searching for the number, I was expressing a high level of interest in purchasing another $100+ knife in their display case. They were so off-putting about the 1-800 number that I decided to purchase the new knife via an online retailer instead. In this day and age, if a local company expects us to Buy Local, they need to be mindful that we have options and reflect that recognition in their customer service skills. By the way, Shun provided exceptional customer service and a quick turnaround. They also offer lifetime sharpening for free.
Anyway, in light of the shoddy customer service that I received from Alpine, I would most definitely try the guy at the Farmers Market first.
Grandma's Pies!
I'm sort of new to New Orleans....here from Houston. There, we had a restaurant called House of Pies. HOP served a really decent version of at least 20-30 different types of pies. Is there an equivalent here and if not, which restaurants even have pie? I don't recall seeing many types of pies on menus here.
Grandma's Pies!
Buttermilk and Chess definitely....and don't forget coconut. Was there also something called Shoefly?
A decent burger....
I am back in Texas visiting for the holidays....and am pleased to report that there has been at least one 5 Guys and Fries in each of the cities I have been in. :-) Hang in there, HeartSick.....even though I wouldn't hold my breath for one in New Orleans, I would bet good money that there will be one in Baton Rouge before you know it.
A decent burger....
I feel your pain, HeartSick. I moved here over a year ago and occasionally dream about good Tex-Mex, beef ribs/brisket and of course, the No. 7 Meal at Whataburger. Hang in there. It gets a little bit better over time. Try to focus on seafood and you will do better.
As the other posters have mentioned, Phils Grill is a decent place for burgers. As for Tex-Mex, the owners of Taco San Miguel are from Houston and the Corpus Christi area. They are my favorite for TexMex in the New Orleans area. Superior Grill on St Charles is ok too.
As for Whataburger, the familiar orange and white roof can be found in Baton Rouge. :-)
Gimchi on Veterans-- Anyone Been??
I am new to the area but am looking forward to checking Sid Mar's out.
Gimchi on Veterans-- Anyone Been??
I really liked Gimchi...strongly preferred it over Korea House. Unfortunately, Gimchi is closed now. It shutdown not long ago. .
Best Mexican food?
I need to check Phil's out. My stepson said they have some interesting burger choices.
Also, if you come across any new Mexican alternatives in the area, I would love to know.
One interesting food tip: I discovered that the grocery section of Walmart sells raw, ready-to-cook tortillas. I used to buy these in Texas and didn't think I could find them here. They are a good alternative to store bought. All you do is throw them into a hot skillet or a few mintues until they are cooked. They are in the refrigerated section. :-)
Best Mexican food?
Please let the owners know, both about the dryness of the meat and the response you received from the employee. I have a feeling they will welcome the feedback and will not only make it right for you but take steps to avoid those problems in the future.
BYOB in N.O. - other than EAT and Lola?
Atchafalaya Cafe was "temporarily BYOB" over the summer. Not sure if they still are though.
French Quarter Oyster Crawl...this weekend!
I agree wtih Kibbles. Dragos chargrilled oysters are not to be missed and I'm not even an oyster fan.
