Martha's Vineyard with kids

Seasons on Circuit Ave has mediocere food with some good selections for kids. The best thing is a big attached game room where the kids can play video games, pin-ball, and air hockey type games. They also serve sushi that has been very good every time I've had it. It can get a little loud during sports games that they show on many TV's, but it's all good fun. A very short walk to the carosele (did I spell merrygoround OK?) It's a good location for kids. The beach is right there too for a swim.

Naked Oyster - Cape Cod

I went there several years ago with my sister-in-law. They had only been open a few months. We ordered a selection of baked oysters. Yummy with one exception. An absolutely foul dead one was on the plate. The stench was awful. I've never been back and never will. I've eaten oysters all over the country and never have been served something so disgusting. I know that they had to know it was rotten, the smell was that bad.

Blue Seal hot dogs

I've seen them at Price Chopper.

Excellent Affordable Wine and Food Phest

Chef makes the point that it is affordable. Affordable it the key word here. Yes there are many better wine events, but not at this price point. At this price one would expect to have to wait in lines. Maybe someone will learn about wine and become a foodie. We all have to start somewhere. (I've got to agree with the PG boys being all about themselves though, shameless selfpromotion at it's worst.)

Point Judith - Any thoughts cuisine in Point Judith?

I second the reccomendation of the Matunuck Oyster Bar. I had lunch there yesterday. Good friendly service and very fresh oysters. I had the Pan Roasted Littlenecks with grilled chourice. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Oyster Cabin?

I went by today, there were 5 trucks there apparently doing work inside. I'll keep driving by every other day or so.

7/09 Great Portuguese in New Bedford: Mimo's on Acushnet Ave.

All of the Portuguese people I work with favor Cafe Mimo. The specials are fantastic. I've had the octopus in spicy sauce with lima beans. It was heaven. Everything I've had off the regular menu has been very good. Much better than other restaurants in town.
The house steak is wonderful. The sauce is to die for.

Trattoria Romana, bizarre service in Lincoln

The bride and I had lunch there today. It took a while to be seated. It only took about ten minutes or so. That was the "fastest" experience we had. We ordered after waiting about 10 minutes for drinks to arrive. We decided to split the Antipasto. It took almost an hour for the antipasto to arrive. Several tables seated after us were working on dessert when it finally showed up.

We had to send it back three times before it finally arrived with everything listed on the menu. It came with only one of the meats listed on the menu. The waitress brought it back explaining that it's different on the lunch menu than the dinner menu. It's not. She brought it back to the kitchen again and a little sliver of proscuitto was added. Finally the hostess had go to the kitchen with the waitress and explain to the cooks what should be on the antipasto plate. The salami finally made it's appearance.

Shortly after that our entrees appeared. The bride had a chicken and artichoke dish that was very good. I had ordered the Petit Filet Maxwell, a filet Oscar variation. My steak arrived plain and I had to wait while the cooks put the lobster, asparagus, and sauce on it.
When it finally arrived it was fantastic. The steak was cooked perfectly rare as requested.
The waitress was all apologies, but I felt for such poor performance someone from management should have stopped by to chat.
I think that the hostess was in charge and couldn't come by because she was too busy trying to expedite orders from the inept kitchen.

I would like to think we just got unlucky, but from the other tables around us I could see no one was getting good service. Two ladies waited 10 minutes to have their dessert replaced after being served the wrong item. A group seated before us were recited 6 specials. We were only offered 4. I figured maybe they 86'd two of them. The table next to us seated later were offered all 6 specials.

La Trat. Romana has great food and some of the lousiest service I've ever experienced. I'd have to say most of it appeared to be the fault of the kitchen. Through the glass wall I could see two line cooks with no supervision in sight. Thankfully the waitress kept our beers coming along with the apologies.

I won't be back unless I'm taken there by gun point and the food is free.

Jays Oyster Portland Maine

The bride and I had a snack there Saturday. The clam chowder she had was pretty good. Once again I had the oysters. Never again. Yes they're cheap, but you get what you pay for. We got there before noon and there must have been two bushels already shucked.
They had to be at least 75 degrees F. Dry and nasty.
I love J's for the beer and atmosphere, but if they let their oysters get that warm, what else are they leaving lying around? Holding temps in restaurants are critical for food safety. Oh, and the stink coming out of the steamers made it obvious that the water inside was old. Old water means no or little cleaning.

Oyster Cabin?

I just drove by, new sign but no sign of life. The sign does say Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. The property looks nice. New paint and landscaping. I'm looking forward to the opening.

dining before the bridge

Hi atlanticgirl. I'm not sure what bridge you mean. Are you coming off-Cape over the Sagamore?
I gotta say, both stores haven't changed much. There is a Roche Brothers in Marshfield that may be on your way. I think it's exit 12 off of Route 3.

1st Wedding Anniversary in Martha's Vineyard

I've been to Alchemy a few times and loved everything about it. Only been to Chesca's once, it was good, but I haven't been in years.
You should check out http://www.mvol.com
You can get info about the entire island and can link from there to the VTA schedule. You'll save a fortune using the bus instead of taxis.
Oh, and Happy Anniversary! My wife and I honeymooned on the Vineyard and have returned every year for our anniversary. 16 so far.
Alchemy is our favorite fancy place. Last year we ate at the Oyster Bar and had an excellent meal. Fresh oysters and a fantastic flat-iron steak. I cannot recommend The Art Cliff diner enough. It really is the kind of place that is a true gem. Great food done creatively. Breakfast is delicious.
Definitely try to see the rest of the island. It's a lot bigger than most think.

Anyone tried Uncle Ronnies Red Tavern

I went for the first time a few weeks ago. The food was good enough, service was OK too. I thought the prices were a little high for the atmosphere. The bar area is modern and nice. I don't see myself going back except to maybe try the Polish dinner I saw advertised.
The salad bar is comically small, but everything on it was fresh.
Their website lists special dinners etc. http://www.uncleronniesredtavern.com

Public Clambake?

Kempenaar's in Middletown RI has a public clambake on July 3rd. My brother-in-law had his wedding there and it was fantastic.
My cousin had her wedding at Francis Farm and it was good. Service was slow for the people not eating clams, (they have burgers and chicken).
Second the recommendation of searching for fire dept. bakes. Also you may want to search "Rod and Gun" clubs. I know that the Singletary R&G club does one each summer. (Oxford, Ma)

Douglas, MA

Falzone's is good, just do not order any fish. The Block Island calamari is fantastic, as well is the Italian. Really great chicken picata. Please believe me when I say do not order any fish.

Curing salt in RI

Be sure to call Tom's if your going there from Providence. I stopped by there today hoping to buy curing salt. They did not have any on display and the two employees working thought that they didn't sell it. Tom's number is 508-755-7295.

New years eve, portland maine

Check Mainetoday.com
They list some restaurants serving special dinners and other things to do as well.

Ship-a-lobster rec's

I've had good luck with LuckyCatch in Portland, ME. They catch their own lobsters and ship them along with clams or whatever you'd like.

christmas dinner in Newport

The food section of the ProJo usually lists restaurants open for Christmas. Try checking their website at Projo.com.

Jays Oyster Portland Maine

The oysters were great there a long time ago. I think they buy cheaper oysters every year instead of raising the price.
The best thing about J's is the cold beer and the people watching. From local Mainers to tourists from NY, there's always something fun to look at while you have a frosty one.

Babysitting 5 year old foodie, need rec.s for an educational dining experience.

I'm looking for recommendations for a truly memorable meal for my 5 year old nephew and me.
I'm going to be blessed with babysitting for him for 3 or 4 days around Christmas. This kid loves food, one of his first food loves was steamed broccoli and he loves sushi and is very adventurous. He's part Japanese and I'd love to share some of his heritage with him. I'm hoping for a dining experience that he will remember for a long time to come. It's got to be lunch which may limit our choices. Any type of cuisine is OK. We may hop the train to Boston so don't be shy posting Beantown recs. We can travel as far west as Springfield, north to Worcester, east to Boston, and south throughout eastern Conn. and all of RI.
He's very well behaved so no restaurant is out of the question.
Thank you so much in advance for your recommendations, it's very appreciated.

New Bedford chow

Cafe MiMo on Acushnet Ave is a small Portuguese restaurant that my Portuguese friends all love. I've eaten there a dozen times or so and have never had a bad meal.
The steak is excellent and they have some great specials everyday.

You may want to go to Southcoasttoday.com, it's the homepage of the local paper.
Under entertainment they have dining reviews with a large archive of past reviews.

As far as New Bedford itself, it's not the greatest city, but it's fairly safe if you use the common sense you'd use in any city. Keep the car doors locked, be vigilant, etc. all apply here. It's also very easy to get out of downtown and dine in quaint Fairhaven or Padanaram village in Dartmouth.

Best of luck with the job offer!

Casa Mariachi, Putnam, Ct review

The bride and I just returned home from a great experience at Casa Mariachi in Putnam, CT.
The restaurant is located on Rt 12 at the King's Inn Hotel, just yards off of Rt. 395. At one time this restaurant was a chuck's steakhouse, a country themed home cookin' joint, and lastly a British Style pub.

The inferior has been down over with the Mexican theme. Stonework accents and paintings of Mexican scenes are on the walls. Very clean and pleasant. The hostess was genuinely happy to see us. (Refreshing!)

Immediately when we sat down a large basket of hot tortilla chips, homemade, and excellent fresh salsa was delivered. Outstanding flavor with fresh cilantro accented by fresh green onions.

We had a beef and cheese burrito that was huge. The ground beef filling was flavorful and moist. The best my wife has had and as a life long San Deigo native with a lust for tacos that's saying a lot. The rice that came with is is the best I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant. It was moist and fresh accented with peas, diced carrots, a green bean or two and seasoned perfectly.
I had a veggie fiesta platter, spinach enchilada , cheese Quesidilla, and veggie enchilada with black beans topped with fresh cheese. I asked for some hot sauce and expected a bottle of standard fare. Instead the waiter brought a bowl of housemade green hot sauce.
It was some of the best hot sauce I've ever had. Lots of heat with plenty of flavor as well.

Our bill for two large platters of food and four Mexican beers was $32.00 with tax. We thought that was a great deal.

The restrooms are clean. There is a seperate bar area that has TV's with sports on. This area is away from the diningroom, we didn't even know it was there until we checked out the restrooms.

We will definitely go back and try some of their entrees such as steaks, seafood combos, and chicken dishes. I'll post updates.

Please consider dining here and keeping this place in business. We are so thrilled to have good Mexican in this area, I'd be heartbroken if this place doesn't make it.

Dolphin Chowderhouse, S. Harpswell: definitely worth a detour

Shhhhhh! That's one of my favorite places! (I'm just kidding about the shhh part)
I was there in August and inquired if they had any larger lobsters than the chix on special. The owner said no, but she walked over to the next dock north of the restaurant to see if any of the lobstermen had any bigger ones. That's absolutely the greatest customer service I've had in any restaurant.
Good people and good food, you can't go wrong.

Copper Angel, Erving MA?

I've been to this restaurant twice and thought it was great. I haven't been in a year or so though. Creative food that is well prepared and very good service impressed me.
It's clean and friendly, the staff gave us tips of things to see in the area. When I say the food is creative I don't mean that it is the crazy over-the-top combinations of stuff that some places serve as avante-garde cuisine. The atmosphere has a very "home-like" feeling to it. I felt like I was the guest in someone's home who wanted me to have a nice meal. I'm sure the babies would be welcome.
Hopefully someone who has been there in the last year will reply. Hopefully it has not changed, I really enjoy this restaurant.

Rte. 24 with Small Children

I've had good luck bringing kids to Dave & Busters in the Providence Place Mall.
The foods just OK, but you can have adult beverages while you supervise the kids in the very large arcade.

horrible eperience Wharf Tavern, Bristol, RI

I attended a private function there at Christmas time.
On the way in I held the door for a nice young lady. She approached the hostess station and asked if she could fill out a job application. The "lady" working there was amazingly rude to her right in front of me, an obvious customer.
When the food came out the shrimp cocktails ordered were not there and the
restaurant staff insisted they had not been ordered. I guess they had not read their own fax confirming the menu for our function.
This is a good restaurant to avoid. If it's raining and you insist on going here wear shoes that won't get ruined in the muddy parking lot.

Raw Bar Lobster Roll

9 out of 10 people love the Raw Bar lobster roll in New Seabury. But realize that they use only frozen lobster. If you are a real aficionado of lobster and can taste the difference, you will not be thrilled with this lobster roll. Having said that, it is a very good roll and huge at that. If you're not a crazy lobster nut like me I would recommend it. Oh, and there seems to be a lot of NY Yankee fans in there, I think the owner is from NY.

Yarmouth Clam Festival?

We've gone to the festival the last three years. We really enjoy the fact that the food, parking, etc is all done to benefit local non-profits such as Little League, churches, social groups, etc. The food is good and reasonably priced.
The craft and art fair is very good if you like that kind of thing.
Would I drive 5 hours to go? No, but I would if I was making it just one stop on a visit to a really nice area of Maine.
Yarmouth is just north of Portland where there are great restaurants and shops.
Just north is Freeport with LLBean and all sorts of outlet stores. If you like to shop you will be in heaven there. The thing we like best about the area is that only minutes outside of any town are those picture post card like scenes of lobster boats and beautiful scenery. Towns like Harpswell, Bailey Island, Boothbay all offer nice scenery and some good places to eat lobster and clams "in the rough". It's a great area to just "poke around" in.
