What to order at The Smith
Shoulda known from the lack of love here not to go... that was a truly mediocre meal in a sterile and uninteresting environment. Skip The Smith!
Need last minute fish or vegetarian-friendly in the EV
What about Westville? It's casual, but still grown up friendly and they have all those veggie market sides and at least a few fish dishes. I always think Italian is a good way to go for vegetarians... maybe Frankie 17? Bianca? Paprika?
Nice dinner - with great ice cream at the end?
Not so high end and probably not the environment you want... but Mary's Fish Camp has great food and serves a great ice cream sundae.
18th Birthday in the City!
I'm seconding Freeman's. You'll be able to make a reservation for that many people and it has such a unique and festive environment. It's not really so hard to find, and walking down that alley with all the lights and everything feels so charming and clandestine. It's really a great party spot, especially if you're coming in from out of town.
What to order at The Smith
I'm going to The Smith for the first time... any must haves on the menu? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
A modest Thanksgiving out for two
Thanks for the recommendation. Casimir looks a little uninspiring, but I guess at that price point we aren't going to be wowed. I've posted on the Outer Borough board looking for something that might be a bit more fun and non-traditional, as I don't think we'll get much in the way of a traditional meal for that price. Who needs turkey anyway!
thanksgiving outing
There's just two of us this year for Thanksgiving. We've decided to go out for dinner, but want to avoid all the fanfare and hiked up prices. I posted on the Manhattan board looking for ideas, but nothing has inspired us. So I'm thinking this might be a good time for an Outer Borough adventure. Anyone have any recommendations for a modestly prices Thanksgiving for two? We're open to either a traditional meal or a more exotic cuisine. Anything goes! Thanks for any suggestions!
Sex on a plate/bun/napkin/hand/cup/bowl or things that make you go *insert homer slobber sound here*
For me "sex on a plate" would probably involve uni. I haven't tried a vast variety of preparations... here's one post about uni in NYC.

A modest Thanksgiving out for two
Thanks, I'll check out Marseille. I'm also thinking that doing a non traditional "ethnic" meal might be a good option.
A modest Thanksgiving out for two
Thanks. I did take a look at Open Table, but for the most part it was a bit pricey. Might just be the only game in town on Thanksgiving.
A modest Thanksgiving out for two
Anyone have any ideas for a nice place to go for Thanksgiving? There will just be two of us, and we don't need lots of fanfare or an elaborate meal. Just a pleasant environment with some good food. Not too expensive... we won't be drinking, so maybe $30 per person. Downtown is preferable... but we're willing to travel for the right place. Thanks for any thoughts you have.
Vegetables
Try Kajitsu. Like you said, the Japanese know how to do it.

Solo diner looking for recommendations (in SoHo or West Village?)
You're staying so close to Prune... I'd recommend go there for any meal of the day. It's not ethnic, but it's so good. You can sit at the bar. You could also have dinner at the bar at Mary's Fish Camp(go early, it gets very crowded very fast), and then hit up Small's for jazz afterwards. http://www.smallsjazzclub.com/
American near Union Square
Thanks folks! It's about time I tried Redhead. Any cocktail recommendations?
American near Union Square
A friend is taking me to dinner in the Union Square area. She's requested American food. I know she doesn't have a whole lot of money, so I'd like to keep it at around $25 per person including tax and tip. Are there any good options in that price range? If not, something nearby... EV maybe?
Chinatown Cart - Lingo help needed
Does anyone have any other favorite chinatown carts? There are so many... enticing and daunting!
Inexpensive near West 4th Street subway
Amy's Bread has a decent assortment of salads, sandwiches and baked goods. You can sit there, but no table service, so that eliminates a tip. 'ino on Bedford isn't too expensive and has delicious food. Doma on Perry and 7th Ave is a cute little cafe, decent food. Cabrito on Carmine has a god happy hour, I think it's 4-7. Have fun!
8AM breakfast in Penn Station tomorrow
Thanks for the suggestion, smokeandpancake. I tried to find a menu online, but there doesn't seem to be one. I'll give them a try!
8AM breakfast in Penn Station tomorrow
I'm meeting some people to take the LIRR tomorrow at 8:45. Is there a decent spot for us to meet for a quick 8am breakfast that is in Penn Station?
Any good restaurants to take client near 33rd and 5th for lunch?
A bit farther, but Sakagura on 43rd and 3rd is fantastic Japanese.
amazing sushi? EV, LES
Just came back from an early dinner at Hasaki and I think that place is still great. Before 6:30 they have a Twilight dinner for $20 that's more food than I can eat in one sitting and the sushi is very fresh.
West Village charming (French) restaurant?
Le Gigot is a great choice. The Little Owl is charming too.
Replacement for Freeman's
Ooh, Minetta Tavern sounds just right. Good thought. I love Sakagura, too. That might be fun for them. Thanks everyone!
Replacement for Freeman's
They did like the food a lot... but I think it was also the drama of the place. Walking down a secret alley, all the taxidermy, feeling like an insider. I don't need to replicate that experience exactly, but I somehow feel like I need a few bells and whistles, even on a modest level.
Replacement for Freeman's
I have some friends coming in from LA. Last time they were here (a couple of years ago) we went to Freeman's and they were wild about it. I thought the food was serviceable, but they seemed to love it. I think they'll want to go back, but it seems the crowd has gotten a little out of control there. Any ideas about where I can take them this time that won't disappoint after the dazzle of walking down that irresistible alley way?
best dishes at Sripraphai?
I steered clear of the Khoa Soi... we got the raw shrimp with garlic salad(incredible!), the watercress salad(very good, though slightly on the sweet side for me), the drunken noodles(tasty, but not at all spicy), and the chinese broccoli with crispy pork(delicious). I think we should have gotten something more mellow to balance out all the salty dishes. But I'm looking forward to discovering more at this wonderful restaurant. Also, we sat in the garden, which was charming.
So where CAN you get good Khao Soi? Does it exist in NY?
sfincione
Is there any place to get good sfincione? The only place that made a good one ( La Foccaceria on 1st Ave, wildly uneven but sometimes great restaurant) is now gone. Must be out there somewhere!
best dishes at Sripraphai?
Thanks folks! I'll report back on those noodles.
I must have done a search on the wrong board, because initially it only turned up 4 threads. But I searched again and, Holy Heavens... I'll be reading all day about this place! I think there will be some serious over ordering tonight.
