Best Burger in CT

Goldburger is everything you'd want in a burger place. The dogs are really good too. They even have food challenges! Now I'm hungry. I'll have to make it a point to get to Newington today.

Hartford Area Restaurants Open for Christmas?

Do they sing christmas carols a la "A Christmas Story"? That would be most entertaining!

best place in CT for Mofongo

Santiago Restaurant on Franklin St in Westfield, MA is as good as it gets. Go on a Friday or Saturday night and the owner sings and plays guitar. It's one of my favorite places to go and their mofongo is represented on my food wall!

The Big E. Anything new?

That's funny. I see you're from the Boston area, so you probably think West Springfield is somewhere out towards Bejing, China. From what I'm told, It's like a large version of the Topsfield fair. The "E" in Big E is short for Eastern States Exposition. Living in West Springfield, I go quite often. My favorites this year are the corn from NH building, Pizza from Wooster St pizza in the CT building (I grew up in CT and lived in Manchester for a while. I used to get takeout from either Wooster St or CJ's) Great slice! Of course the free samples of Cabot cheese in VT and chased with a nice Otter Creek beer of your choice. The Maine baked potato is really good, but I wouldn't be caught dead waiting 2 hours for it. Billies baked potatoes are just as good. I always get the raspberries in the Mass building. RI is my favorite. The lobster stew is worth every bit of $10 and the lobster ravioli with vodka sauce is to die for. Other staples are the turkey leg from the Pork Palace, cheese curds, Gyro at Demetri's ,the "cheeseburg fried" at White Hut and tasty beverages wherever tasty beverages are sold. All of the foods mentioned are featured on my food wall. The beverages are featured in my fridge.

Modern aPizza

Frank Pepe is the top of the mountain. You can climb the Modern mount or the Sally's mount, but you will always be looking up at Pepe. I don't always eat pizza, but when I do, I prefer Frank Pepe. Stay hungry my friends.

Halfway between Hartford and Manhattan?

Two words. Frank Pepe. You can meet in New Haven which is closer to Hartford, or Fairfield which is as close to halfway as you're going to get. I couldn't get a decent meal to save my life when I was out in SF. I'm going out there again next June. I'll have to get some rec's from you.

Top 5 of the Cape

I'm not a Cape Codder (although I drink them quite frequently), but I play one for one week each year. I thought anywhere north of Orleans was outer Cape. Then Orleans, Brewster, Chatham and Dennis were lower cape. Hyannis, Yarmouth and Falmouth is mid Cape and upper Cape is where the bridges and Woods Hole are. I'd like to get this down so I can appear to know what I'm talking about in certain social situations.

Thumanns hotdogs in CT

I've heard good things about the Thumanns dogs but I haven't tried them. The best dogs I know of in CT are the Grote and Weigel. I grewup in CT but now live in Mass. The Blue Seal out on Chicopee are the best dog I've ever had. They have a snap that can't be beat. And, of course, they are best with a little mustard and chopped onion. No ketchup for anyone over the age of 12!

Lower Cape Amazing Dinner Rec Please

You won't be disappointed with ABBA, but if you want your socks knocked off, try Ocean House in Dennisport. That was my favorite of the cape. It's right on the ocean and it has excellent food. It is the definition of a culinary oxymoron!

I went to ABBA in Orleans last week and it was terrific. Great atmosphere, excellent food. The lamb was out of this world.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

Had dinner at Ocean House last night. It was everything you could ask for in a restaurant. It really is the quintessential ocean front restaurant. The oysters were terrific. The calamari with fried with slices of chorizo melted in my mouth. The lobster ravioli might be the best I've ever has and the Wagyu steak with the cabernet soy reduction made me want to drink the sauce by the glass. Even the dessert was a work of art. I'm not a dessert guy at all, but when your vanilla ice cream comes in a chocolate bag with chocolate spoons, even I was helpless against it's powers. Tonight we'll try Pisces in Chatham even though I want to go back to the Ocean house.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

Dammit CCG. Your cape bible has holes? Fin was good, but I wouldn't put it past Brewster Fish House. The Menu at Fin was limited. Quality was similar. Maybe I hit BFH on a good night. Clientele at Fin were dated too. A bit stuffy and "cape sweater perfectly wrapped around the neck with their new girlfriend" types there. It made me a little ill.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

JT's was a pressured choice. We arrived in Brewster at 1 and our house was a 2 pm "check in". JT's was just there. Next time i'd rather eat sand. Abba was fantastic last night. The lamb was as good as it gets. The food wall takes up 3 walls in my kitchen. Every time I anticipate a great culinary experiences, I take pictures of the food before it's consumed. If it's great, it goes on the "foodwall" either in a 5 x 7 or an 8 x 10 picture. I've got a lot of good stuff on that wall. I have 4 pics from the Brewster fish house. I thought i'd have to re arrange the wall when I heard it sucked. I was happy with it this year, but it has slipped a bit. Just about to leave for Fin tonight. I'll let you know...

Fish Market Springfield Area?

Schremerhorns in Holyoke is probably the best place in the immediate area. City fish in Wethersfield, CT and A.Dong grocery in West Hartford, CT are fantastic. A.Dong is an experience in itself!

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

Just tried a reservation for Thursday night. 5 or 9:30. Forgot to mention, we went to JT's in Brewster on Saturday for lunch. Terrible! Impudent Oyster was fantastic. The bouillabaisse was terrific. I'm considering it for my food wall.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

CCG

Went to Brewster Fish House last night 8/14/11. I was both happy and relieved with the experience. Although it wasn't as good or as ingenious as it was before the change in head Chef, it was a solid 8. Tonight we have reservations at Impudent Oyster in Chatham. Tuesdays Reservation is at Abba in Orleans. Wednesday is Fin. Tried to get into 28 Atlantic and it was either 5 or 9:30 for reservations all week. I'm trying to get Ocean House for Thursday night, but they're closed today so I can't book anything. Lunch tomorrow at Sesuit Harbor. Can't wait. Tried to go to Villa Roma Saturday night and there was an hour 40 wait. Some of the people there told me to go down the road to Lascala. Not good at all! Thanks for the top 5 from the other thread. I'm really living by it. PS, Never go to the Cape Cod chip factory on a rainy day unless you are a glutton for punishment.

Favorite Cape Cod Clam Chowdah?

I've got love for the creamed clam! I go to the cape for a week every year and stay in Brewster, so I may not be as seasoned as someone such as yourself. The best chowders I've had on the cape were at Captain Parkers and the Brewster Fish House (both are on my food wall). The Brewster Fish House, by all accounts, now sucks. That is a crushing blow to my Cape week. We'll be there 8/14 - 8/20 and I will be using your top 5 list from another thread to guide me. I have to take the advice of a guy who has Cape Cod in his name, right. I'd like to add to my food wall this year. Do you think I should skip the BFH all together?

White Hut style burgers in Connecticut

Harry's is a great little place. I was very happy with their burgers. Shady Glen in Manchester has a great burger too with fried cheese. I reside in the home of the Hut. Every time friends come in from out of town, White Hut is sometimes asked for, but usually demanded that we go for lunch. I hear they're opening another Hut in Amherst. It'll probably be a goldmine if it stays open late night. Those Umass students will be lining up for those burgers to soak up the booze.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

Musicman. Since you have knocked my beloved Brewester Fish House, to which I have not been to yet this year, I have a few questions for you.

1. Do you think that the clam box in Ipswitch is overated?

2. Do you think Frank Pepe pies are burnt, and are upset at the way they slice the pie?

3. Is ketchup on a hot dog OK if you are over the age of 13.

If you have answered YES to any of these questions, I will discredit you immediatly. If you answered NO, I will be crushed, and have to, not only find a new vacation spot, but find a new reason to live. The Brewster Fish House has 4 places among my kitchen foodwall. If It's no longer good, I will have to rearrange my whole kitchen!

Where to buy meat in the Pioneer Valley?

Ye Old Butcher in West Springfield is a great place for meats. They'll give you any cut, any size right in front of you. They have a lot of marinated chicken, beef and pork skewers too. All at great prices. If you're into Italian sausage, Frigo's in Springfield has the best around. They also have outstanding prepared foods as well. I wish I could find a place around here that sold Dom's original steak tips. I can only find them in the Boston area. Those have to be the best steak tips I've ever had. Every time I'm out that way I buy 3 or 4 packages.

Dining in Springfield Tonight

For a great experience with some of the best cajun/southern style dishes you'll find north of the bayou, try Chef Wayne's Big Mammou. It's BYOB too!!

Try the seafood burrito or the seafood chimichanga. The Tacos pastor and the enchiladas are great too. As for the cheeseburger on the menu, believe it or not there are culinarily slow people who would think, by name alone, a hamburguesa con queso is sheep liver marinated in fish eye juice. I hope I keep my rep!

Chef's Equipment Emporium is comin' to the Pike (Berlin, CT)!

I guess both stores are designed to spice things up. I went to the Classic Restaurant Supply in Hartford (I think it's the same concept) for a large pizza pan. Once i was there, I decided not to stop at one pan but three pans. And a large salad bowl. And 5 stainless steel mixing bowls. And two new cutting boards. And a big stock pot. And a big stock pot wooden spoon. And a new pizza peel. And cheese and red pepper flake shakers. And a new blender for cocktails. And a more powerful can opener. And a zester (still haven't used it). And large mouth quart sized Mason jars. And plastic ketchup and mustard squeezers because somehow condiments taste better out of a squeezer. And a garlic slicer. I overdosed on kitchen! I cant wait to go back. I can stop anytime though. I don't need to have new kitchen stuff, I just like them. I think I might need a meat slicer! Gotta go...

Taste of West Springfield 2011

The taste of West Springfield starts tonight 6/9/11. Looking forward to another year of the ultimate foodie setup. Lots of vendors, lots of food and a tasty beverage or two. Its a chow trifecta! There are a few new vendors this year. I'm excited to try Local Burger out of Northampton and Istambul Mediterranean Grill out of Agawam. I'm sure Pintu and Thai Taste will be great as always and I'm intrigued by the lobster sliders at Samuels. Also, 100% of Thursdays proceeds go to local tornado relief efforts. It's a win-win!

I went to the Pintu Sunday night. Those Tandoori Lamb Chops "Dodiya" are becoming a powerful and addictive drug for me. If I eat them on a Friday night, I think I'll be fine not to eat them for a week. By Wednesday I feel compelled to ask anyone with a white styrofoam take out box it they are holding any Pintu Lamb. Oh by the way, The Taste of West Springfield starts Thursday 6/9 and Pintu will be there! The "Better than Mammou" statement is a mighty bold one! I work close to D&L's. I have to try it. Two questions, Is it a lunch place and is it BYOB ?

The best lobster mac and cheese I ever had was at The Loft in North Andover, MA. There are a lot of ways to completely mess that dish up! The Loft does it right. I hope it was the place you saw.
