SF Dish of the Month (April 2013) - Voting CANTONESE WONTON NOODLE SOUP |
|
|
Anchovies in six packs gone from Costco! That Costco in Hayward carries anchovies, but a large can equivalent to several small cans. |
|
|
Which deli has fantastic sandwich bread/rolls? Raymond's, SSF. All choices are excellent. |
|

Produce before Sacramento...would that be Pedrick Produce in Dixon? They have the very best homemade(or homemade-like) flour tortillas and delicious slab bacon from the refrigerated section. Also, a huge selection of pickled items, nuts, grains and good, seasonal produce. We stop every time on our way from Oakland to Donner Summit. |

ISO Disposable Aluminum Mini Pie Tins Maybe try contacting Janelle at www.pietisserie.com. She does pies and mini-pies at local spots. |

Portugese Chouriço (Chorizo) in East Bay (or SF)? Luso Mercado Delicatessen |

Restaurant in style of Chez Panisse, etc. near Embarcadero or Fisherman's Wharf? We last dined at Boulevard Jan. 2012. Service and food were both excellent, and felt the value/food cost was good. Seared scallops were my choice and were perfectly cooked; beef and lamb chops also ordered and all were really tasty. Friends brought wine from their vineyard, and the corkage was comped with another bottle purchased. Look forward to returning. |

Great pizza in Truckee - where? At Kingvale, the exit before Sugarbowl, there is a small family owned pizza place, Donner Pass Pizza. Everything is made from scratch and the toppings are all fresh. Also, soups and salads and S'mores dessert pizza. They're closed Monday & Tuesday, but you could try calling. Read the Yelp reviews for more info. |

San Fran Wed and Thurs in May - Need expert foodie & bar help. Not SF, but easy to access in Oakland. Chop Bar, reclaimed, recycled materials providing a great, rustic ambience. Great service, comfortable and knowledgeable. Excellent specialty drinks (my fave, the Spicy Q) and wines on tap. We're in our young 50's and love the mix of this place, and the staff accomodates everyone!. Best of Oakland in our book! |

Grand Lake (Oakland): What to Eat and Where? Went there based on Chowhound reviews. Service was slow and unattentive, atmosphere was very cold and stark; coats needed to stay warm. Being fair, did not order steaks or prime rib. Husband ordered burger; just okay , smallish-cooked fine, bun was ordinary. Fries okay. Ordered calamari, which was served on a bed of tortilla chips-odd. Wanted to like a neighborhood place, but disn't feel much warmth or effort from the staff, and the the food underwhelmed. Hope they can improve for their sake! |

After reading the replies, decided to head from 80 to 50 on our way home from Tahoe to East Bay. ----- |

Best ham, roast beef, meatloaf, turkey or roast chicken sandwiches in the Bay Area Haven't been, but sounds like the ultimate sandwich shop. Calabria Brothers. Sounds similar to Armanino Bros that was on San Bruno Ave. Nothing like a good deli sandwich. http://www.thrillist.com/potrero-hill... ----- |

Bachelor Dinner recommendations Caffe Sport for dinner and Gino & Carlo's next door for drinks. Lots of other stuff in the area, too. If you go to Caffe Sport, take a couple of cubes of butter to share; you will be everybody's best friend. ----- Gino & Carlo |

Great thread on Italian Oakland. Makes me glad I'm an SF native transplant to Oakland. Adesso/Dopo both great, and a owner's a good guy loyal to the community. Trattorria la Ciciliana on College is fabulous; memories of Caffe Sport, SF. ----- |

Does anyone know what is in the Buckhorn Grill tri-tip rub? Not Buckhorn recipe, but one used for many years and loved. Tri tip steaks, coat with lemon -pepper seasoning, garlic powder, placed in a zip lock bag and add soy sauce. Let marinade over night. Bring to room temperature for at least 2 hrs. Grill at high, then grill steaks briefly on both sides. Yum. |

99 cent store on Saturday in Hayward: 1lb bunches of excellent asparagus. Bought 4 pounds and there was very little waste. Made an excellent low fat soup using 1% milk and fat free half & half. Saute onions and garlic, make a roux with flour and butter, simmer until tender, blend and add spices to taste. Really good soup, and healthy. |

Thanksgiving Day PCH to SF Road Trip Meal My mom and I had one of the most memorable meals of our lives at Mattei's Tavern. The very best steak and delightful ambiance .; it was all very suited to the area. The meal and experience made for a perfect ending to an uneventful trip back from San Diego and was the highlight of our trip. I hope it is still as good as it was many years ago. Diane ----- |

Bakery Selection Later in the Day Pre-order. I phoned in an order on a Thursday, arrived a half hour early on Saturday and my pre-ordered items were ready . Perfection in a box, and at an incredible price. Wows on all three items ordered. Check out the items on the website, or call and talk to the owner. Very accomodating. |

German Chocolate Cake in Lincoln/Roseville Costco cakes are aweful in terms of a good baked item! The frosting is so thick and full of lard, and leaves a film on the roof of your mouth. They are inexpensive, but the quality is lacking. |

French pastries in San Francisco? If you're willing to cross the Bay Bridge for an incredibly delicious and astonishlingly good value, give Le Bedaine in Albany a try. I purchased three large pastries (fruit tart, Millefiore(sp?) and chocolate cream puffs) for @ $40 and was amazed at the the quality and quantity. Alo purchased the house-made smoked sausage; as a non-smoked person, it was delicious!~ Added it to a pasta sauce and it was so tasty. As previously stated on CH, prices are amazing and the service and product are perfection. Plus, it's on the free parking section of Solano Ave. |

Recommendation for parents who like buffets Thank You! As a relative newcomer I am flattered my suggestion was approved! My father was an engineer at KRON-4 (across the street) for 30+ years, and he and my mom enjoyed many meals there together. Fond memories, and decent food. |

Recommendation for parents who like buffets How about Tommy's Joynt in SF? Old school and a good value. Plus, a barrel of pickles! ----- |

my first taste of Oakland's Flavor Brigade -- amazing ice cream Son and I went there this afternoon. We live in the area and had a feeling it was a former Baskin Robbins near the Safeway. FYI, there is a free parking lot in back if you're afraid of the Meter Nazis. We were offered tastings of anything without asking. I decided on the Cherry Italian Ice, and received a generous cupful and it was so tasty and the portion was large. Son had a large waffle cone with Cookie Dough and Blueberry Honey Graham Cracker--delicious! Products are made on site, fresh fruit in the fruit items. Gal at the counter today is a friend of the owner, and super-nice and informative about the product. |

Berkeley Bowl West - The promised land ... west of Eden I recently went on a Sunday, about the same time, walked in and walked out because of the huge crowds. When I went on a weekday, same time, the checker said Sunday afternoons and Tuesdays are the most crowded. After heeding his advice, I haven't experienced that frenzy again. |

Best eats and Bars in San Luis Obispo / Central Coast Alex's BBQ, across the street in Shell Beach is better BBQ. Relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. Huge and good beef ribs, entrees come with salads. Also, adjoing the restaurant is a funky neighborhood bar. |

Van Ness Cash and Carry... good stuff! We have been shopping at C&C for years. Great meat prices, way better than Costco, and they will offer to help you to your car. I adore the employees at Oakland C&C; a really good store. Cash/credit card only. Diane |

Okay, that made me laugh out loud! My mom and brother live in Moraga, but oh so sleepy. Asia Palace is good but an even better experience. The owner's flying out produce, etc as giveaways. We made it home with organic lettuce and oranges. Last time we were there, he insisted on giving my brother and my husband a beer each, but "it's on the house". Hey, what about more wine for me? Just kidding, but the food is good and it's a lot of fun. Good for a try. |
