Easy Apple and Pear Crisp with Oatmeal Streusel

Didn't the description say something about fresh ginger? Whatever, I still miss the Supertaster.

Hatch is back

Hatch peppers are overrated. Plus, I don't need hatch cookies, hatch ice cream, hatch stuffed hatch peppers, and hatch soap.

Chad Robertson's New Book (September 2013)

Robertson's new book will be called "Tartine Book No. 3." The description states it is a "search for ancient flavors in heirloom grains" with "groundbreaking new methods of bread baking including new techniques for whole-grain loaves, as well as porridge breads and loaves made with sprouted grains."

I'm not thrilled with the title, but I'm sure the book will be worth it.

PBK Stem and Stein

Anybody been to this restaurant in Pflugerville? They have lots of beer and wine and Southern-style food. I had the burger and really enjoyed it. Waitress said they bake the buns there in the restaurant.

The patio is really nice. It has a fireplace and usually some live music.

What are your current faves in the Round Rock area?

Teji's is one of my all-time favorite places to eat. It's where I go when I want Indian food. It's a small place across from Round Rock high school.

Teji's gets a facelift

Glad to see a thread about Teji's.

My wife and I went in one week and came back the next and the whole place looked different after the renovations. It was a weird feeling at first.

The food is great. I like the spinach/potato side (palak aloo, I think) and the chicken korma. Teji's is one of my all-time favorites.

Best Pizza in Austin?

I thought the crust was horrible. It was completely dry. There wasn't anything memorable about the toppings.

Plus, they have a machine that rolls the dough balls out for them. If you can do that with a dough ball, your dough is way too dry.

Best Pizza in Austin?

I'd second that vote if the category was for the worst pizza.

You have to think the judges felt they screwed up by choosing Aria over Brad in last week's elimination.

I have no evidence to support this statement.

My wife said the same thing about the kid. Not seeing your mom for however many weeks (eight is what I think I heard them say) and then taking him away.

I was surprised to see Brad go. He was trending upwards, and Aria was on somewhat of a down-slide, with the exception of the current episode.

Making Bread in Texas

Every time I make bread from a recipe, such as Peter Reinhart's bread books, I feel I need to add much more flour to get it to the correct consistency. Does anybody else have to do this?

san antonio food police on alert

I think it's pretty cool. San Antonio is one of the fattest cities in America. Plus, these are government employees -- some of the biggest employees known to man.

She's only kicking out the vending machines, not restricting the employees from bringing things to work. Cutting back on sodas is a huge step towards getting fit. She should disable the elevators if it wouldn't violate federal law.

Pizzeria Corvina Closed?

It's not in a good location because it's buried in the middle of the parking lot and not enough people knew about Pizzeria Corvina. They even offered a Dell discount as Dell is right across Hwy 45 but that wasn't enough to keep them in business.

Maybe it's the fact that you have a gourmet pizza place in a strip mall. Maybe gourmet pizza doesn't play as well up North of Austin.

Pflugerville doesn't have too many pizza places... there might be a market for a new pizza place. If you were to move into the old Pizzeria Corvina, marketing would be huge.

Ramsay Cookalong (LIve?)

This show was a mess and I love watching all GR shows.

1. It was supposed to be a holiday special. Nothing about the show made me think about preparing a Christmas dinner. This show easily could have aired in the Summer because the dishes and other content told me nothing about this being a holiday special.

2. There was way too much going on. Celebrities in the studio, celebrities via phone, random people across the country who you never really focused on. Plus, some cheesy skits that barely tied into the show. The kid thing was kind of funny, but it didn't fit. The GR on the street was less funny (exception of the Jay Leno cameo and reference to "Jaywalking") but that too was forced. I didn't expect Fox to try and push a Gordon Ramsay Variety Hour.

3. Technical issues, most important being his microphone going out in the first quarter of the show. Second and less important, I would have liked to see the "LIVE" graphic more often just to prove that it's a live show. That's a minor gripe from someone who used to work on live tv production.

Best Austin CSA?

Scott Arbor is the best. They are at the Farmer's Market downtown and are mostly known for their peppers. So you'll get some of those in the Summer. They grow swiss chard, lettuce, carrots, shallots, broccoli. It's all really good. The winter season is starting up so I think you can still get in.

Turkey and dressing craving

Threadgills has a turkey and dressing special on Sundays I think. I checked the website and couldn't find the specials menu.

Bread Books

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good bread making book? The only thing I have so far is Alton Brown's book that has the straight dough method section. I'm looking for a comprehensive book that discusses the bread making process and gives lots of great recipes.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sushi Nini

The Red Devil Roll is my favorite sushi of all time. I do think it's weird how they're trying to be a sports bar though. Not sure that'll work.
