The best diner in the South
No, No, No, the best diner in the South is:
Weaver D's
1016 East Broad St.
Athens, GA 30601
(706) 353-7797
Open Mon-Sat 11am - 6pm
The is the best southern style home cooking I have found anywhere. I used to live in Atlanta and Tampa. This place has the old Cleve's from Atlanta and Pop n' Sons (Mom's too) from Tampa beat hands down.

To be fair I must report back and state that Market Fresh Produce is still in business! I plan to visit them this weekend. They now have a website:

Welcome to Athens and enjoy!
Could Athens, GA, support an "indie" butcher shop?
Aside from "Simply Meats" on Baxter, there really is no other place, (other than the usual grocery stores), to buy meat in Athens. I can't imagine the idea of more than one Butcher Shop surviving in Athens due to the ever increasing vegetarian population in this Town. The "Vegans" are taking over! (LOL!)
Market Fresh Produce - Bogart GA
A sad day for Boagrt and the Athens Georgia area. I made my usual Saturday pilgrimage to Market Fresh Produce this weekend. My heart sank as my car approached the market and pulled up in front to see the door locked and all the shelves bare of beautiful fresh fruits and veggies. There was a closed sign on the door, but the sign did say will re-open in October. One must suspect something more than just a family vacation, since we are still at the peak of the summer growing season down here in the South. Perhaps a change in ownership or perhaps a "gentle" way to just go out of business without much fanfare. Closing any business for a 6 week period of time could be fatal for the business especially in this economy. I will be pleasantly surprised to see them re-open in October like the sign says, but I seriously doubt it will happen. There won't be much for sale in October except for Pumpkins, Apples, Onions and other root vegetables. All the brightly colored summer stuff will be out of season by then. Alas, the search is on to find an alternative, but I doubt it will be as good as Market Fresh Produce. Good-bye, we will miss you.

They have had the best Tomatoes all summer. Beautifuly red, sweet and juicy. You must also try the homemade local bulk sausage. I recently made some sausage gravy with it for a pot luck at work and was the hit of the party. I try to vist them every Saturday. Just to let ya'll know, they ARE closed on Sundays.
