late night in NOLA

Hi,
Heading to New Orleans in late March, just getting a jump start on planning! We get it around midnight, but will be on California time and have traveled all day. Is there any place in the Quarter open late night to grab a quick bit to eat? Nothing too heavy, a great appetizer or two and some drinks would be perfect.
thanks!

Green Split Peas

Thanks for all of the ideas! I'll give the 'hummus' a try and report back, that sounds good. You're right about the price, it was about a dollar for the bag, cheap enough to play around with. I've been trying to get my creative cooking juices flowing and do a 'spring cleaning' on the pantry, it's been fun!

Green Split Peas

Hi,
I've been organizing and cleaning up the pantry and found a large bag of green split peas I purchased a few months ago and never got around to using. It's starting to warm up, not really split pea soup season. Does anyone have any other green split pea recipes?
Thanks!

a few very excited foodies come back to NOLA.....please tell me where I should throw down!

I'm excited for your trip! I found the restaurants in New Orleans amazing and as exciting as any place in the country. So much soul in the cooking!
Cochon was awesome, my favorite restaurant and we hit up a lot of them on our few days there. We had aligator bites, turns out I like aligator! We also had a headcheese special and another special app that had layers of roast pork, eggplant and a poached egg (there were a few other things, but I forget), it was awesome, totally different then anything I've ever had before. We also got the cochon au lait which trumps all other roast pork. A little noisy, but it's a great place.
That said, I would pass on Stella! We went there on our big dinner night out and it was a major disappointment. I found the menu over promised and way under delivered. The best thing we had was the first thing, the foie gras app. It was a take on a blt, but with foie, roasted tomato, slaw and toasted brioche. This was excellent. We also has a shrimp app, sort of a salad, good, but nothing memorable. The entree was terrible. We got the duck 5 ways, which was highly recommended. I hope this was an off night, because I can't imagine that was how the dish was supposed to be. There was a duck soup element that was nice, but the duck wonton that went with it was greasy, bland, it tasted like it had been frozen and re-heated. The roast duck was dry and stringy. I forget the rest, but we left most of it. The other entree was a fish dish, very fishy. Instead of dessert, we opted to get the check and get out. We ended up heading back to Cochon for another round of apps.
We also liked Acme, Napoleon House for drinks, and a funny experience at Laffite's Blacksmith bar. I had one lunch by myself and had great meal at the bar at August. It seems a little pricey for dinner, but it was nice for lunch.

Have a great trip!

Good eats in Alameda?

I wish I could remember the name of it, it's escaping my mind now. In the past, they've been at the back of the parking lot, not on the street. Hopefully they will be there this week! I'll take better notes this time.

Good eats in Alameda?

The Saturday market is nice, small, but a good variety. I went near the end of Summer and got some great blueberries, still have some in the freezer. It seems like a lot of the farmers are there, or they've hired very knowledgable people to work the booth. There is a really good Indian food stand from Watsonville, excellent Tika Masala and Eggplant curry. They weren't there yesterday, hopefully they'll be back next weekend.

does anyone know if the market is year round?

Good eats in Alameda?

Hi,
We're new to Alameda as well and have been exploring the restaurant and food scene here as well. I think Dan's Produce is the way to go, really good produce and a fraction of the cost of veggies at Marketplace. I think Marketplace is massively overpriced and the qualitity is no better then Dan's.
I ike Hob Nob for brunch, good pancakes and bloody marys.
Pizza is hard, Alameda Pizza on Webster is the best we've tried on the Island, it's fine, nothing like Cheeseboard in Berkeley.
Coffe shops-you have to try Wescafe and Little House, we flip between then, both highly cute and with good coffee. Wescafe is on Webster (near Lincoln) and has a great outside area in the back, really nice people. Little House is on Blanding (near Park St. Bridge) and has good food, I really like the crepes. Food can sometimes take a while, but the coffee comes out right away.
Thai-there's Toomies and King of Thai both on Park, they are both fine, but not great. I would cheack out Chai Thai on International in Oakland, it's a close drive from Alameda and really good.

Good luck! Post back what you find!

Crab in Seattle

Hi,

My husband and I will be in Seattle this weekend for the first time. It's a work trip with lots of commitments, so we really only have one or two dinners to ourselves. We would love to get a great crab dinner while we're in town. Any recommendations for the best crab in town? It will be either Sunday or Monday night (I know it's not ideal, but it's what we have to work with). Doesn't have to be fancy or formal, casual works for us.

We'll be staying downtown, but can take public transport or a cab.

thanks!
