Favorite Santa Barbara Restaurants
Mediterra Cafe in Goleta now does sit-down lunches - and they're delicious.
Dessert Santa Barbara?
Go to Alcazar, the tapas bar on the Mesa, and order the chocolate caramel truffle cake with kahlua sauce. To die for.
I also second the recommendation for the souffles at The Palace.
Knife dilemma - Good price on Henckels Stylus set, but is it worth it?
Hoping for some advice from knife experts. I spotted a Henckels Stylus 8-piece set as seen here...

...for $50 at a local discount store. Seemed like a good deal, but then I wondered about the quality. How do the cheaper Henckel knifes compare to other brands, and would chowhounds recommend these ones with stainless steel handles?
I don't necessarily need 8 knifes, but I'd use them if I had them. Or would I be better not to go for this set and instead invest in a couple of higher quality knifes? I'm on a tight budget.
Thanks...
What besides Vegemite should I request from Auckland?
I'm addicted to Feijoa sours — chewy candy found in bulk bins in Auckland supermarkets. (Feijoa = pineapple guava).
I'll split the cost of the Vogels plane with you, Junipery.
Pismo Beach --> Monterey --> SF, recommendations?
I was at Nepenthe in Big Sur last weekend and had some delicious appetizers, not to mention a fantastic view to go with a late-afternoon glass of wine. In Monterey, head for Passionfish (actually in the town of Pacific Grove, just down the road). The food is terrific, the wines aren't much more than retail and they serve only sustainable seafood (and other tasty things, including an incredible chocolate+raspberry dessert). If you're traveling from Monterey to SF on Highway 1, stop at the Whale City Bakery, which is somewhere north of Santa Cruz, for great croissants, etc.
