Chinese Food - Lemon Cod Filets?

Thanks--I'll have to check out those two (and spend more time in the SGV).

Chinese Food - Lemon Cod Filets?

Throughout my years in college, one of my favorite restaurants was Dragon Regency in Monterey Park. My grandparents lived in town, and it was one of our regular spots. One time, I couldn't decide what I wanted, and the waiter recommended lemon cod filets. I didn't see it on the menu, and he said, "It's not there, but the chef will make it for you."

I never again ordered anything else. And eventually, it made it onto the menu. But by then I had moved out of state, so visits were few and far between.

Flash forward to several years ago, when I wanted to take my then-fiance (now Mr. Sandwich) there. We pulled up--and it was closed, replaced by another restaurant.

I still miss the Dragon Regency, and I've never found another lemon cod dish to equal theirs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

BEST CHINESE FOOD IN THE VALLEY

I've been to Mandarin Tiger twice. The first trip--I loved it. The food was flavorful and cooked just right. The second? Not one dish was good. And the weird thing was that the better food came at lunch on Sunday, while the unsatisfactory meal was a Saturday dinner, when you'd think they'd really be nailing it for the crowd.

But that wasn't the case, and it was really bad. I won't be back.

Does any one know when the Whole Foods in Tarzana is going to open?

This thread is old, but I figured I'd reply, particularly given the assumptions. Obviously some of this turned out not to be the case--there is no gate at the parking, and no need for validation. I suppose that could change, but at the moment, that's the status (and the store's been open for over a month).

Considering how congested both the store and parking lot are at the Sherman Oaks Sepulveda location, and that it's a ways to the Woodland Hills location if you're not that far west, this Tarzana store seems well located. Added benefit of underground parking: it's covered, which means that my car stays cooler than at the other stores.

My only source of dissatisfaction is the shopping carts--not that they have to be taken up in an elevator (I'm not sure what the issue is there)--but that for some reason, they selected a cart design with an unusable bottom shelf. It's angled, so there are only a few inches toward the very end of the cart that allow you to place something there. And that space is so narrow that I'm pretty sure items would fall off.

Other than that, though, I'm very happy with the store, and it seems to be getting good business.

Best Coffee in LA

Love the Raven's Brew Deadman's Reach--I just gave some as a gift!

Kauai Foodie?

Agreed--we've gone on each of our three Kauai trips over the past 5.5 years and are big fans. My parents went in the early 1970s and had an extremely memorable and delightful experience, and we're very happy that it's held up over time!

Saimin outside of the Beach Cities/South Bay?

Awesome! Thanks, everyone--I'll have to try some of those. (Haven't ever tried L&L's saimin, although I am fond of many of their other dishes.)

Saimin outside of the Beach Cities/South Bay?

Is there anywhere to get saimin without driving to Torrance or Gardena? Particularly in West L.A. or the SFV?

New to the SF. Valley. Where are the best places to eat??

I haven't been to Aroma Cafe yet, although I've driven by it many times. It's on my list of places to try. I'll have to add CiCi's as well.

Chili My Soul- Closed Indefinitely

So sad to hear this. I was just craving Chili My Soul, and went to the website to see what they were offering today. I'm really sorry to hear about Randy's passing. Although I didn't know him, he created something unique--and delicious.

Chicken Fried Steak

Has anyone had the CFS at Newcomb's Ranch on Angeles Crest Hwy.? Obviously that's sadly inaccessible right now, but it did survive the fires.

New to the SF. Valley. Where are the best places to eat??

We moved to the SFV less than a year ago, and enjoy the following:

Adrian's (Italian; White Oak and Vanowen)

Salsa & Beer (White Oak and Vanowen)

Cafe Carolina (Ventura between White Oak and Lindley)

Vip's (breakfast; Ventura between Lindley and Reseda)

Brooklyn Pizza (Tampa just south of Vanowen)

Yang Chow (no, it's not SGV-level, but we're not there, and it's head and shoulders above anything else we've found; Topanga Canyon just north of Victory)

Who has the best hummus?

I recently tried California Mediterranean Grill by Amer's Falafel, on Ventura Blvd. in Encino. The food was generally good, but I thought the hummus was amazing: very creamy and smooth. I even got some to go at the end of my meal. Has anyone else tried this place, and how would you rate it?

Best Pizza (NY Style) in LA

I've only been there once--and that quite recently--so I can't compare to what it may have been earlier. However, we did pick up some pizzas at Brooklyn Pizza a couple of weeks ago when we had company, and everyone loved it. We'll be back, I know.

Help! A glorious 13-day honeymoon on Kauai and Maui - where. to. EAT!?
