hmm a few friends have suggested the halal cart and said the chicken and rice is not to be missed. are you not a fan and why?

i like the idea of ny style pizza, never had it and definitely want to try it. i do love neapolitan pizzas too. maybe we'll do bleecker street (pizza and macarons) instead of eataly for lunch and just go to eataly for snack. the space seems really cool.
thanks for the macaron and serendipity link. i love macarons, so will try and pop by some of these if the wait isn't too long. =) or try and go during off times as RGR suggested.
thanks for the tips on dominique ansel. depending on stomach capacity, will take those into consideration.
we have a soft spot for amorino from our trips to europe. but the ice cream sundae at luger looks good.
will look into the breslin, clinton st. baking and shopsin's.
lots more to read up on! =) thanks!

CHEGO Soft Opening - Roy Choi of Kogi BBQ opens Rice Bowl concept on Westside
I agree with quick and tasty, but I'm unsure about the healthy part. My sister brought back leftovers from the pork bowl, mostly fatty pork, and the chicken bowl and they were both greasy.
Grand Central Market - Recs?!?!
i crave the cantaloupe juice we had there. don't remember the name of the place though.
ISO Taiwanese sit-down, family-style dinner
There is a place on called Liang's Kitchen that we really like for the hand cut beef noodle soup and they also have very good sweet homemade soy milk. They also have a bamboo side dish and ox tail soup that are tasty. 227 W Valley Blvd, San Gabriel, CA 91776
For 3 cup chicken, we really enjoy the one at Mei-Long Village 301 W Valley Blvd
Ste 112 San Gabriel, CA 91776
For a taiwanese cannot miss kind of item, I would suggest boba or brick toast or shaved ice from a tea house. I personally like guppy house http://www.myguppyteahouse.com/ , but its a bit out of the way. They actually also do taiwanese food as well, but its only ok. I am in love with the portuguese style egg custard tarts at Elite 700 S Atlantic Blvd
Monterey Park, CA 91754. I guess its not really taiwanese but I first had these in Taiwan years ago.
French Macarons in Brentwood
Hey OC Mutt, have you tried the macarons at the Larder at Tavern? We had the pistachio, pumpkin and salt caramel macarons. They are $1.50 each, and slightly smaller than the ones at La Provence, but pretty tasty. The lady behind the counter was very helpful and the salt caramel macaron was definitely the highlight. Maybe give it a try next time you're in that area.
On a side note, I recently had an absolutely delicious chocolate macaron from the Bouchon Bakery in Vegas.
Need restaurant suggestions for dinner with friends in West LA
2117 restaurant might be able to accomdate a group of 8-10 if you call ahead? It's relatively quiet and their food is japanese euro fusion cuisine. They have a $38 prix fixe that includes choice of any two small plates or salad and one entrée. with dessert.
I really enjoy their fried calamari with garlic parsley sauce and the three layered crab salad with baby greens, avocado, tomatos chive, vinaigrette & wasabi sauce.

I also like the backroom at Musha rec as well. You can view their menu here: http://musha.us/
French Macarons in Brentwood
This post is called french macarons in brentwood. I think I am allowed to share my experience on these two macarons. That's the whole reason I went. I never was asking chowhounders to judge the entire restaurant based on my assestment of two macarons. I am merely just stating that the macarons were not that great.
French Macarons in Brentwood
I did go to the La Provence in Brentwood Gardens and I bought two macarons. The lady who addressed us acted like she was in charge, so I assumed she was the manager, but server is fine. Apologies for not using the proper term.
Both my husband and I thought this lavender macaron tasted like lotion or soap and usually lavender is one of my favorites. I was just sharing my experience at the restaurant.
French Macarons in Brentwood
We stopped by on Sunday, the 27th and the lady had some serious attitude. She said they were closing (with several people still eating) around 3pm, so I asked if I could look around. I then asked if I could buy a $2 macaron and she said closed means closed and didn't I read the paper sign in front of the door? I honestly didn't since I checked the hours on the website and was just so excited I walked right in. Despite her very rude attitude, another very nice server at the counter offered to help me, so I bought 2 macarons. Also, while the hostess was rudely lecturing me about the hours, another customer had come in and ordered a sandwich.
On to the macarons - they were very beautiful as always and rather large. we ordered pistachio and lavender. I love lavender, but unfortunately this lavender macaron was overpowering and tasted like eating soap. The pistachio also tasted rather artificial. I'm not sure I will be returning, but I hope that hostess adjusts her attitude.
anniversary weekend in san diego
I don't think there was any statement anywhere in this post regarding wagyu.
Thanks for your input and recs, but we already came back and had a lovely weekend.
anniversary weekend in san diego
Here is our mini food report:
Lee's Sandwiche's (Westminster-on the way down to SD)- combination sandwich as a snack, great to eat while driving and held us over til we got to la jolla and you can't really beat the price.
El Pescador - grilled mexican large shrimp (very large and flavorful, think it would have been even more juicy with the shell and head on, but still good), grilled scallops (slightly dry, but maybe cuz we had them cut them in half), dungeness crab cocktail (can't really mess that up, their cocktail sauce had chcunks of tomatoes which was nice) and clam chowder, pretty good too. I liked the local vibe of this place.
Breakfast/lunch at the Cheese Shop in downtown. We drove around unsure where to eat and just decided on this place. I had mushroom and swiss omelette - it was ok, and husband had pork loin sandwich. the pork loin was cooked nicely and went well with the relish and mustard and other items in the sandwich. Good to try once, not sure if we will be back.
Dinner at the Wine Vault. Thanks stevuchan. This place was fantastic. We would definitely go back. What an excellent value for a 4 course meal plus wine. We sat outside in the firepit area but the inside is nice too. Our favorites were the ume black cod and the pork belly, but here are the descriptions from the website:
Beef Carpaccio | Gorgonzola Dulce | Black Truffle Vinaigrette | Micro Arugula | Pickled Grapes
Ume Glazed Black Cod | Baby Bok Choy | Smoked Rice Noodles | Breakfast Radish | Micro Cilantro Braised Pork Belly | Dashi Broth | Ginger-Scallion Vinaigrette Grilled Hanger Steak | Herb Roasted Potatoes | Maitake Mushrooms | Caramelized Onion Chutney | Demi Glace
Brunch at Extraordinary Desserts on Sunday. We were going to try to make it to Cavaillon, but we'll have to save that for next time. The european breakfast buffet, which we've had several times is good. Smoked salmon and some nice cheeses and for some reason I'm addicted to their roasted tomatoes - however this time, the skin on them was rather tough.
On our way to Solo in Solano Beach, we happened upon the delightful farmer's market on Cedros Ave. We tasted some sweet white peaches and spicy salami, a little too spicy for me, and I bought some beautiful flowers and jewelry.
Thanks for the input and the recs.
anniversary weekend in san diego
sounds perfect. thanks.
what do you guys think of bronx pizza vs. sicilian thing pizza? i love thin crusted neapolitan pizza.
anniversary weekend in san diego
thanks, these are great suggestions.
after reading the suggestions and looking at the menu's i'm actually leaning away from the "fine dining" and fancy hotel experience and looking for a more low key tasty dining experience. maybe somewhere with a vibe like starlite, cool and chill, but better food? or maybe somewhere for happy hour?
i also love macarons and had some last time at mille feuille. any other recs for macarons?
kinda off topic, but can anyone recommend a good massage place?
anniversary weekend in san diego
sat is pretty open. doesn't need to be too nice. open to hole in the wall and casual as long as it's something good to eat.

Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Seville Trip
Hi everyone,
We just got back last night. Here is a short post of what we ate.
Madrid:
Lateral - close to our hotel and open on a Sunday evening. it was ok, everything was a little salty. the jamon iberico was kinda tough
El Cenador del Prado - good squid ink rice
Seville:
El Rinconcello: good salmorejo, tallerines, gambas
La Alqueria at Hacienda Benazuza - 30 min from Seville by taxi - I really wanted to love this place as they serve dishes that El bulli has served in the past. At 110 Eur a person not including beverages plus the 70 Eur round trip taxi from Seville, I found it to be really unremarkable. The things we ate were inventive, but did not taste good together and at that price I was expecting a lot more. For examples - crab meat with a chocolate horchata like soup; razor clams with lemon foam on top; thinly sliced iberico jamon wrapped over a crunchy bread; rabbit in a sweet sauce - pretty good; the olives with the burst of olive oil? were probably my favorite thing. the dessert was one of the most inventive desserts we've ever had. it looked like a block of ice, but it was some crazy dry ice or foamy thing and they sprinkled dehydrated yogurt on top and you had to eat it very fast. it tasted kinda like air. it was really cool.
Granada:
Oliver Dinner: good tapas, gambas, salmorejo
Los Italianos: best horchata - so light and refreshing and not that sweet. made from chufa root.
Parador cafeteria for lunch: we went here out of convenience since its pretty much in the Alhambra. the food was not that great, fried calamari, gambas in oil, and tuna fish sandwich. however the sangria was wonderful - tasted like juice!
Taberna del Baco: fried eggplant with honey - I also really wanted to love this but it was really kind of bland. salad was good, tasted like fresh veggies. cream of meat with mushrooms tapas, it was alright too.
Barca: overall, we loved the food in Barca. We thought it was the best food in Europe of all the places we have visited (Paris, London, Amsterdam, a bunch of Italian cities). For 3 days we ate A LOT!
Paco Meralgo - great tapas and great setting. perfect for a sunday evening when a lot of restaurants are closed. the chefs were so friendly cooking in the back. we enjoyed all we ate, but for some reason right now I cannot remember.
Cerverseria Catalana - thank goodness it was open on Sunday and during siesta. We were starving and had a great snack. the chef was super fun too. nice octopus on top of potatoes. a really good lightly grilled mushroom salad with some jamon, and the third dish was hmmm. i am blanking at the moment
Boqueria - unfortunately both Pinoxto, Quim were closed by the time we got there at 4pm. We did however, have some of the most excellent jamon iberico and great manchego cheese as well as a few slices of serrano. for 100 g? each, and a nice slice of cheese it was about 30 Eur. Some nice fruit and juices as well.
Senyor Parellada - we had the senyor parellada rice which was really tasty - like paella with a lot of seafood. we also had the duck with figs (the duck was a little over cooked, and the figs were excellent but the dish overall was really sweet) and a cod with some clams. the cod was very tender and the clams were so so. For dessert, we accidentally ordered a frozen horchata type ice cream thing with a side of creme brulee type custard and chocolate fudge on top. It was really refreshing. We also noticed that two other tables ordered it as well. Also had a cheese plate that wasn't too memorable.
Cinc Sentits - We had the tasting menu at lunch and it took about 2.5 to 3 hrs. It was excellent. We loved the foie gras on top of the thin flaky pastry. The wine pairing was excellent as well, it complemented every dish perfectly. The suckling pig soue vide? for 24 hours and then seared was so succulent and delicious. the maple syrup shot with the salt on the bottom, I thought i would dislike, especially after the experience at La Alqueria, but it was wonderful as well. Overall a great tasting menu at 65 Eur a piece. The wine pairing was 30 Eur.
Cal Pep - we happened upon this place after walking around after Senyor Paradella so we decided to revisit on the last evening since we were in the area shopping. It was a great last meal. We had the most delicious large gambas (shrimp) grilled with sea salt. then the torta espagnol was my favorite thing - just delicious. we also had hake, which I saw on every menu, but didn't know what it was and it was a nice white fish, kind of a cross between cod and sea bass. We also had really a lightly fried seafood platter with shrimp, calamari, fishes and that was the most excellent fried food i've had. I'm not a big fan of fried foods and this was so light and airy and crispy and the batter was not too strong at all. We also had tallerines, which when Pep walked by and saw me eating with a fork, he was like no no no, you pick it up with your hands and eat it directly with your mouth. It was quite amusing.
Thank you all for all the recs. Overall thoughts: In Madrid, Sevilla and Granada, it was more about proximity to where we were vs. venturing out to find some of the restaurants. For instance, we couldn't find some of the restaurants listed and we were soo tired and hungry, we just tried to eat at wherever it was kind of convenient. However in Barcelona, everything was really easy to find and I'm really happy we planned ahead since there were quite a few restaurants closed on Sunday and Monday's. I really recommend having your hotel make reservations for you in Barcelona. We didn't have to wait at all, except for at Cal Pep, which doesn't take reservations.
Thank you all! =)
