Updates on Aruba?

Wow, thank you both. This is very, very helpful. I think we'll go with Barefoot instead of the Flying Fishbone. We also have reservations at Marandi. I think we'll skip Old Man and the Sea. I am going to see about Ellioti's now! It looks like it might be ok to bring my daughter there because they have live music to drown out the toddler noise!

Updates on Aruba?

Thank you! That's very helpful. We are staying at the Marriott Ocean Club. Is there anything at all in the high rise area worth checking out?

Updates on Aruba?

We are staying in Aruba next week. I have several reservations but I am still shuffling things around.

So far, I have:
Flying Fishbone
Old Man and the Sea
Papamiento
Madame Jeanettes

Is there anything I should add or subtract? I am seeing some not so great reviews recently for Old Man and the Sea and Papamiento.

My preference is for good food over fancy presentation. In fact, I would prefer a casual environment to something super upscale but will follow the tasty nibbles. Little local places are great. I avoid trendy and chains at all costs!

Thoughts, please!

Inexpensive (but good!) choices in Camden/Rockport area

My husband and I will be staying in Camden later this week. After looking over these boards, I've made reservations at Primo and Long Grain. We're also planning to check out Paolina's Way. However, we need a few more suggestions for good places to eat.

We're looking for fairly inexpensive (i.e. less than Primo) places that have basic but GOOD food. Any place that uses local produce is a major plus. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Mother's Day/Thank You Dinner with Mom?

We're going out Wednesday. The one caveat is that it needs to be on the earlier end of things (6:30-7:30ish, not 8, 9 10) because we're up early the next morning.

Bibiana sounds good. I've never been there....

Mother's Day/Thank You Dinner with Mom?

My mom is a very adventurous eater and would enjoy Eola in theory. However, I went to Eola once last fall and I had an AWFUL experience. At least one member of our party's food was literally inedible. The service was horrendous, too. Perhaps it was because it was restaurant week?

Mother's Day/Thank You Dinner with Mom?

My mom is coming into town next week and we are going to do Mother's day and a "thank you" dinner in one. I'd like to take her somewhere with great food and a nice atmosphere. That doesn't necessarily mean formal dining... I'm just not looking for a hole in the wall.

My mom is an amazing cook who grew up with fine food and wine. My dad is not so into food, so she doesn't get to try too many great restaurants these days. Last time she came to town, we went to Ris and she loved it. She's also enjoyed 701.

Any suggestions on a nice place with amazing flavors? I'd prefer something in Dupont, Georgetown or downtown.

Stir-fry with Oyster Sauce?

So, I went nuts at this cool Asian food market in Virginia the other day.

As a result, I have an entire bottle of Oyster sauce and I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I know it's used in a lot of different stir-fry sauces but I need a recipe.

I was planning on using some pork, some tofu and the oyster sauce. I also have tons of fresh veggies. Can anyone think of something yummy to do with all this? I also have sesame oil, soy, fish sauce, Siracha, curry paste, so on so forth, so I'm pretty well stocked.

Pork tenderloin question

Thanks everyone for all the tips! I will definitely brown it before roasting and, as a raw garlic flavor is NOT what I'm going for, I will go ahead and just roast some garlic in the pan with the apples and onions and then make a pan sauce.

Pork tenderloin question

I have a pork tenderloin at home that needs to be cooked. I found an online video that recommended cooking it with apples, onions and garlic. Sounds yummy.

One question: The video recommends cutting shallow holes in the raw meat to create pockets that are then filled with crushed garlic. In theory, this infuses the pork with a garlicky flavor. In practice, wouldn't this just allow the juices to escape and dry out the meat? I would appreciate any guidance on this.

Thanks!

Cedar Restaurant--New in PQ

I also enjoyed Cedar. I went about a month ago and the place was almost empty on a Sunday night. However, service was great and our meal was lovely. I don't think it was the most amazing dining experience I've ever had but it's a solid American menu for a reasonable price.

Paneer

Does anyone know where I can find paneer (indian cheese) in DC? Obviously, you can get it cooked at Indian restaurants, but I'm looking for plain, uncooked paneer to use at home.

Thanks!

St. Michaels area for fine dining etc...

Rise Up is great if you are on the road... but, if you want a really nice, friendly place to sit, I recommend St. Michael's Perk. The owner is really very sweet!

Georgetown Waterfront Recs

Agraria just re-opened as Agraria Fishers and Farmers.

The old place sucked but the new menu is actually pretty good and very reasonably priced.

The service is still spotty... but, as a resident of that neighborhood and one who's eaten multiple times at most of those G'town waterfront restaurants, I can say that you will be LEAST disappointed by Agraria.

Coming Soon: Ping Pong Dim Sum

I've been to one of their London locations. It's been a while... but I remember the dumplings being very yummy and sort of unusual. They don't do dim sum carts... rather, everything is steamed/fried to order.

What I really remember was their wonderful cocktails. They had fruit based cocktails that weren't sticky-sweet. Hopefully, they won't change this for the American palate.

I would definitely look to Key Lime Cafe and Ava's for lunch.
