Your suggestions for a week in the Charlevoix?

I also just returned from a week in La Malbaie - I second the Pain D'Exclamation, really good pastries and a fantastic bread (sourdough) called the Charlevoisien. Great service as well. There is a really cool old time mill/bakery off the highway and closer to Baie St. Paul called the Moulin La Remy - again great bread, pastries and flour. We ate at the Boheme Steak restaurant in La Malbaie a couple of times - good Veau Charlevoix and steaks. It also served some neat regional beers particularly the La Vache folle. One restaurant we wanted to try but ran out of time was in the nearby town called Le St. Laurent Cafe in St. Irenee - great looking place with a really interesting menu, you may have to make reservations for dinner. It is a beautiful region - enjoy your stay.

New BBQ joint coming to Roncesvalles.

The meat was served warm to cool - there was a persistent spice throughout the popcorn, the ribs/brisket and the sauce that unless you liked it was too overpowering throughout. Not very impressed and man do they whack the salt on everything. If you want bbq go to Paul and Sandy's - much much better and more authentic.

Burger DE ville - NDG ( Westminster)

Good burger, friendly staff. Cut the bun to fit the burger - whats the big deal!

Olympic krema yogurt

Loblaws on St. Jacques sell it in their Organics section. I haven't tried it yet because I'm still addicted to the Maple flavoured Liberty yogurt.

Go to the Metro on College and buy their Eight O Clock Coffee, columbian, great cheap coffee. Rated by Consumers Reports as the best buy for coffee. I use it with my stovetop espresso and french press coffeemakers. Eight ninety nine a Kilo.

What happened to Massimo's Pizza ??

Went back today for a second slice this week and I take back everything I said in my earlier post - the slice i bought today (arrabiatta) was disgusting; sort of reminded me of pizza toppings on wonder bread - the crust was soggy, seemed almost unbaked. Didn't recognize any of the workers from previous years. It ranked up there with the worst pizza I've ever had - too bad I once really enjoy their slices - what happened since the Makeover show????

What happened to Massimo's Pizza ??

Had a slice of the arriabiatta this afternoon - not bad, seems to be returning to the original stuff. For the past year (ever since the Restaurant Makeover) the pizza has been pretty crappy until today - thankfully.

Driving the 401 - Toronto to Montreal

Give Mike's Restaurant a try if you like good homestyle diner food (not super fast unless you order one of the specials) good food especially the fish dinners and soups. It offers meals sort of like the specials at the Tulip. Its at the Marysville exit, right off the highway and if you're like me every kilometre counts, two exits east of Belleville.off of the 401 If you do have some extra time fill up with gas on the Tyendinaga reserve - just south of Marysville.
Safe travels.

Diners, drive-ins and dives

Mike's Restaurant in Marysville, Ontario - just off the 401 east of Belleville on the edge of the Tyendinaga Reserve. They have the best homemade bean with bacon soup I've ever had. Great homestyle meals - fish, turkey, stews, etc. Pleasant staff and good prices. Another good diner style place, again pretty straight forward fare but a great breakfast for cheap is Stavros Family restaurant on Queen in Parkdale.

Coffee beans - any recommendations?

Eight O Clock coffee - picked by consumer's reports as the best rated coffee. It's available at all Metro stores, tastes great and it's CHEAP (which improves the taste).

Baker's Yeast in Toronto?

great news, tre marie has excellent ciabatta bread; what the heck is farrow wheat flour?

happy bread baking!!!!

Baker's Yeast in Toronto?

1311 St. Clair Ave West. check the cheese section - it will be wrapped in saran wrap. it's an excellent bakery.

enjoy.

Baker's Yeast in Toronto?

Keep this a secret and don't tell anyone.....you can buy fresh yeast at tre marie bakery on st. clair ave west its about a half a block east of oakwood on the south side. They sell it in the cheese area, to the public, individually wrapped for about two bucks - no need to try to smooze the bakers or the owners, its all out in the open.
Happy bread baking!!!

Wild yeast in Toronto?

i am not a big fan of reinhardt's book - it definitely has alot of worthwhile information but .....its really boring. Have a look at dan lepard's Handmade Loaf - excellent breadbaking book (he also has an excellent website with forums) with a great section on building your sourdough starter. Once you build your sourdough starter the rest of the breadbaking process is pretty much the same as with the dried yeast breads - mix, knead, rest, ......proof, shape and bake. The big difference is the end result -- sourdough has a wonderful taste and texture unparallelled by dried yeast breads.
My advice -- get a copy of lepard's handmade loaf and use your ambition to start making some sourdough bread.

Rolling Rock Beer

I know what you mean Rolling Rock is an excellent beer - just watch the movie Deer Hunter and you'll want to slug back a few RRs before the end of the movie. Toronto bars actually sold RR for awhile about ten years ago in an attempt to explore the interest level up here - I guess there wasn't enough sold. I went for a tour of the brewery years ago in Latrobe, Pa. What do the numbers on the backside of the RR label represent?

Really good bread

3 quality Italian bakeries, and they've been around for decades - Nino Diversa on Keele just south of Finch (North York); Rustic Bakery on Keele and Rustic (just north of Lawrence Ave - North York) and Tre Marie on St. Clair Ave W just west of Dufferin; all three are authentic Italian bakeries. My french bakery fav is Pain Perdu on St. Clair Ave W just west of Christie - great baguettes, sourdough, etc. One other french - in the Beaches on Queen St. E - Zane's. Enjoy, you'll find lots of good bread in T.O.

Where to buy a stovetop milk steamer?

Go to Rustic Bakery on Rustic and Culford (keele and lawrence area). All kinds of stove top espresso pots and milk frothers - they even have a juventus espresso pot! Not sure of the make but you can also purchase a stovetop espresso pot that also froths milk.

I use my stovetop milk frother daily.

Is Cobbs the best bakers in TO?

there used to be an excellent bakery called the "Slice of Life" on Coxwell unfortunately it's gone (Carole was the owner). I enjoy buying bread at Zane's in the beaches - baguettes and pain de noix are fantastic!!.
