Fresh Pasta in West or East Village

Dell'Anima

We very much enjoyed it. We went twice last year. Place was TINY!

As a matter of fact we went back to Morandi a couple of times also but they did NOT make their carbonara with the fresh pasta, just the dried. The Bolognase had the fresh pasta.

Chelsea Market

This is usually our afternoon stop on the way out of town. I buy bread, seafood, fresh pasta and treat myself to something from the Bowery Kitchen Supply store. The lobste bisque from the Lobster Place is one of the best on the planet (comes from having an excess of lobster shells). While most of my friends come home with bags of clothes, I come home with great food.

Seeking "old school" Italian-American in Manhattan.

My husband asked me for something similar for his birthday lunch. Specifically red checkered tableclothes, old fashioned red sauce with Sinatra playing. I refuse to eat in Little Italy unless someone can point me to somewhere edible. The food is important to me so I'm picking Il Mulino for dinner. We would like somewhere between Midtown and Battery Park. Maybe Carmine's or Tony DiNapoli's? My go to place is Trattatoria TreClori but the decor is too modern.

Fresh Pasta in West or East Village

Anyone know an Italian restaurant that serves fresh pasta in either the West or East Village? Going to be in the area for a Sunday Brunch. I like the fresh egg pasta and the carbonara at Morandi but would like to try something else. It has to take reservations since we don't enjoy spending a Sunday standing on a sidwalk. Money no object and happy to walk.

Love Anne Burrell

I just finished watching a "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef" show and I really like what she does. She has the same enthusiasm for food and cooking a young Emeril had in way back when he first started in Essence of Emeril. Such as when he said, “Lamb shank’s you see ‘em, you buy ‘em baby.” I tried her Beef Bourguignon and thought it was excellent. She marinated the chuck overnight with large and easily extractable hunks of onion, carrots and celery. I hadn’t seen that before but it did a great job of tenderizing the meat.

Her show has a nice balance of professionalism without snobbery and accessibility without pandering. Just seems a nice cooking show without the host being more important than the food. Feels like what the food network used to be.

Looking for an upscale cocktail close to Le Bernadin

Thank you!

Can you recommend a restaurant in NYC/Manhattan?

Excellent advice. If you want to try something upscale and less pricey lunch can be the way to go. I've been to Lupa's several times and think it is the way for the OP to go if she likes Italian.

Looking for an upscale cocktail close to Le Bernadin

We normally like to have a cocktail before dinner. I don't think Le Bernadin is the place for it so I was wondering if there is somewhere nearby that would do. Something upscale. We have 8PM reservations so a little late for a happy hour. I love the King Cole bar in the St. Regis but haven't been able to get a seat in awhile so I don't even want to try. Maybe the Four Season's? Haven't been there in awhile.

The roller coaster that was Le Bernardin- A mini novel

Thank you for your review. I will be dining at LB myself on Sat. so I was happy for the read. I'm definately with you on disliking the disconnect between an online menu and the one given when dining. I deliberately waited to the very end to see who the writer was and was delighted it was you. I've read many of your reviews and have always thought they were spot on. Sorry they didn't acknowledge you when you sat but at least you didn't have to wait for the check (my own pet peeve).

Keen's, Luger's, DBGB or something else?

I would love to take my parents to Luger's but if they only take cash the thought of bringing enough to cover a party of 6 and travel so far freaks me out!

Scalini Fedeli - Best Dishes

I'd like to know also. We're going there this weekend.

Kick-ass, old-school, hardcore art of cocktail mixology

We stay at the St. Regis once a year and if we aren't staying they (in for a day trip) we usually go to the King Cole Bar. We've noticed a increase in the average age of it's customers.

Gastropub or something similiar

I'm going with my parents (60's) to NYC in December and staying at the St. Regis. I'd like to make a dinner reservation in an American or Gastropub place within walking distance. I was thinking Bar Americain.

Any reccomendations?

yum alert - mini cupcakes from Baked By Melissa in Soho

We stumbled across this little hole in the wall a couple of weeks ago. I thought they were excellent. Just the opposite experience as a PP. Ton of flavor in two bites. Love having different flavors.

Like Mario Batali says "Who need 27 bites of the same thing?"

Here is their website:

Magnoila Bakery

We tried Baked by Melissa in Soho and were wowed by their minature cupcakes. I'd like to know what other's thought.

I know this thread is a little past it's prime but I was at the Flatiron Lounge this weekend and would go again. It hits all 4 points, great new drink but an old world interior. I can't wait to get back.

Your Ideal meal at Scarpetta?

deabot we had the same experience. Although the polenta is one of the best dishes I've ever had and we don't eat dessert. The ravioli was heavenly also, but I was stuffed after the polenta, bread basket and then the ravioli.

We'll be back but I won't oversell it either. Hate to push this to one of those overrated restaurants that then see a backlash.

Your Ideal meal at Scarpetta?

We'll be there on Sat. night and I'm really looking forward to it. The DH is not a foodie or adventerous eater so I think I'm safe with the short ribs and tomato basil spagetti. What else would you reccomend that would be a simple Italian recipe?

We have an early reservation (all that was left). Can someone reccomend an upscale elegant bar nearby? Chowhound posters sent us to Yerba Buena a couple of months ago and it was one of the best drinks we've ever had.

Anyone know of a good fondue place?

I feel terrible I reccomended a place that isn't currently open. We were there in December and it was wonderful. I called to confirm that they were still closed and they said they would be open by the end of the month.

Anyone know of a good fondue place?

If you like classic cheese fondue, might I suggest La Bonne Soupe 48 W 55th. I'd love to hear what you think.

Stanton Social Dinner? Elegant Cocktails Nearby?

An update- we ended up in the area earlier than we planned and decided to have an early drink at Yerba Buena. Although the place was empty - it was 5PM and we're not even sure they were open when we walked in. We had some of the best drinks of our lives. The bartender did an amazing job of mixing our drinks and then spent some time with us talking about them. I would definately reccomend stopping by here for a Mojito. I don't like them but my friend is a huge fan. We'll always remember the special ice cube mold they have and special mint they use.

Stanton Social was excellent. The only problem was that we didn't order enough food and we were starving 3 hours later.

We went to the Pegu Club and loved it.

Thank you to everyone who gave me so many wonderful choices.

Although I am a fan of AB. I'm also a fan of RR and Giada's. One of RR's greatest strength is her humility, she has never claimed to be anything but a 'cook'. Making food accessible is one of her greatest strengths. I wasn't upset at all about her doing DD's, she's all about quick meals not perfection. Funny, but I think you have it backwards. I would be upset with AB for selling out if he did DD's. Grape juice - well it could be an episode on his show but DD's couldn't be an episode if you follwo my meaning. He didn't step out of his material with grape juice and RR didn't with DD's.

I agree his first passion was acting and cinematography but I certainly disagree that he is "acting" like a foodie. He didn't HAVE to go to culinary school but he went because he loves it. Going back to school was not a necessity rather an indication of commitment. How do you know he DIDN'T yearn to be a chef? I bet the majority of his audience wanted/ or wants to be a chef. On being a foodie, he did say he found himself reading cookbooks on sets. No one BUT foodies read cook books just for fun.

Stanton Social Dinner? Elegant Cocktails Nearby?

After doing some reading on Chowhound we have reservation next Saturday night for Dinner. I was thisclose to going to Alto but my friend is looking more for a "scene-y" place for our night on the town. Any reccomendations on what to order?

We'd also like a couple of recommendations on where to go for some upscale cocktails afterwards. Preferrably within walking distance. I've gotten two suggestions already, Pegu Club and Flatiron Lounge but I don't think either are within walking distance of SS.

We want something uber-chic, upscale and trendy but definately no waiting outside and not so loud we can't hear one another. Price is no object. There will be four of us. Two couples in our 30's (OK- I'm lying, early 40's) so no clubbing 20 something scene.

Since we're staying in Midtown, we'd love a suggestion for nearby there also.

Trendy Birthday Dinner with Specifics

OK. I've booked dinner for Stanton Social. Where to go afterwards that is upscale chic but not crowded. Price is no object. Party of four.
Great cocktails are a must.

Alton is a serious foodie who did go to the NE Culinary Institute BTW who goes to great and amusing lengths for culinary perfection. His show is about integrity. While RR and Sara Lee have always been about making food accesible and has never claimed to be a "chef" rather a home cook. Getting the food on the table in 30 minutes is almost a complete 180 from Alton's build it yourself contraptions and complicated recipies.

? about fondu @ La Bonne Soupe

Just a follow up. I did take my parents and DD's there last month for lunch.

It was the only restaurant in the area with a line at 11:30 AM on a Saturday when it was noticably uncrowded everywhere. We took that as a very good sign It was the perfect place for us. My parents did not want something stuffy for lunch and this was very relaxed and casual.

We shared the cheese fondue as an appetizer and couldn't finish it. Everyone had a hamburger and "Onion Soup" except me. We decided it would be redundant to call it "French Onion Soup" since the servers had very thick French accents. I had the lamb with scalloped potatoes and was very pleased. My parents thought it was hysterical that the hamburgers came on English Muffins.

The salads had ice cubes in them which we weren't sure was intentional.

This was far superior and not more expensive than the chain Irish Pub fare my parents prefer.

Great street food in Midtown

We'll be doing a selfguided walking tour of Christmas window's from Macy's on 34th up 5th Avenue to Barney's on 60th. Any suggestions for a vendor that has great street food or a place to stop for a good sandwich?

I don't want to end up in a chain in Times Square.

Thanks.

Can someone remind me where this is? I don't think I've eaten there in 10 years and I have fond memories of a sausage plate of some kind.
