LI Strawberry festivals?

Hey Coll, I have been so busy with the holiday preparations, that I haven't been on. I went to the cider mill and it's actually called Hallock's Cider Mill. It is closed until spring now, but I know you are going to like it. I tried the blueberry crumb and the apple crumb and was very pleased. The place smells to die for. I can't wait til you try it. Good luck with the aftermath of this blizzard! So windy!!

Excellent lunch at Love Lane Kitchen. Mattituck- North Fork

I had the porterhouse last night at the elbow room in jamesport and was not happy. It was the unmarinated one. It was NOT tender. So not worth the 29 bucks.

I am happy to hear this! I will have to try it. I agree, we must keep up these operations. I just spent a fortune today in Green Earth Grocery. The owner is the nicest man! I actually grabbed something to eat at the Culinary School place. It was my first time there. It was a burger, which was alright, but I do not think I would go back for that. Especially when the Tweeds burger is so outrageous. I was in a rush though.

Oh yes, they sell halves. I like his lamb sausage as well. Not like Villa Italian Specialities in East Hampton, that sells lamb sausage with pork in it. As far as the seafood Schmidts, I did stop by there two weeks ago and tried their soup. I think it was a lobster bisque. They gave me a taste because they had just made a batch, and it was good! I drive by there every day and can tell they have done a renovation on the inside. I still go to Cor-J for fish though. Coll, today I went to the Old Cider Mill in Laurel to get a thanksgiving pie. OMG the smell when you walk in there is to DIE for. The blueberry crumb is magnificent so I would imagine the rest is all good. They are only open two more weeks so please try to get in there. They are open tomorrow until two. Honestly, the smell is so divine, you won't want to leave the place. Happy TG!

It is Canus. That is the brand. I just came across it in Sayville last Sat. I just did the whole circuit of stores this week after work. You know how the weekends are! Back to food, I have to say the salad bar at schmidts in East hampton is really good! The stuff is fresh and it's maintained, very clean. There is a vast array of items. I really enjoyed it today. Their mashed potatoes are quite good as well. I find their sandwiches really overpriced. Considering you can get an entire hero sandwich at My Butcher (opposite Foccacia place in Wading River) for twelve dollars. They make the sandwich on an entire loaf of Italian bread. It is huge. You can feed a few people off of that sandwich. Schmidts charges for lettuce, tomato, cheese, etc. I think I ordered roast beef once on bread, with nothing on it and it came to almost nine dollars. Definitely try a whole hero from My Butcher. You will not be disappointed and Pete the owner and staff are SO nice!

I'm getting a feeling we must pass eachother on the road all the time! well i haven't been to matsulin in the last year. i went when they first opened, and then i checked in once a year after that. Once I moved from HB i just stay on sunrise to 24 between EH and RH. The sushi was still good. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check in again. I liked the presentation of the sushi back then. The spicy mayo was excellent. They have a wide range of menu..they do the malaysian thing, so it's not strictly japanese. Not as wide as Asian Fusion in Quogue, but then again who has a larger menu than they? Vivian, the owner is very nice. Her husband runs Ming Garden, the chinese place in the Wild By Nature shopping center. Let me know how it goes if you get there before I do.

The ambiance at Haiku is better. More feng shui. The tea is jasmine. Sakura's decor is..well you'll see when you get there. Some people are quite impressed. I haven't gotten past the weird smell when you walk in. I ordered sushi to go and some sashimi and the pieces were super small, and I was kind of upset. Then they didn't get the roll right, but that was the first week they opened. I think the place is good for the hibachi. It has a nice charm the cheesy hibachi tricks like for a kid's birthday. I asked him to do my noodles and vegetables spicy, but he said he couldn't do that on the grill because he cooks for the other people too. I wasn't sure why he couldn't move mine off to the corner and throw the chili sauce in it and the sriracha. It's just not the same if you put in on after it's cooked. Also, we were the first to sit late in the afternoon, it was not even dinner time, yet we ended up having to wait forever because they sat other people at the table and had to wait til they looked at menus and ordered, so that should have been explained to us because I was just looking to get a quick lunch. i'm not that inspired to go back. My favorite sushi on the east end is matsulin in hampton bays.

Nope. It's not Catapanos. It has a french name I think. Catapanos is more down-home. This is more commercial. That back room is interesting. I always wonder who buys all that john deere stuff they have. Checkout the little country store in Jamesport or the gift shoppe on the side of LLK in Mattituck. That one is pricey though. Thank God for Home Goods lol

Not to miss on Long Island, anything goes

Well, it's great to know about this Pie place. Thanks so much guys! I know I will get to Port Jeff at some point to check it out. You were right Coll, I was thinking of a place I could stop on the way home from work which is from East Hampton but starting from Wainscott. I do not like the whole parking situation in the bowels of East Hampton. I remember a great Nonna pizza (the grandma) in mastic, shirley. I remember going over the tracks, a little south passing the big pizza place on the right and then making a left turn and it was on the little side street adjacent to the parking lot with the bar. I forget the name of it and I doubt the italian couple that ran it is still there. I do not find myself going to mastic but I do have fond memories of that nonna. It had all the caramelized onions on it. No red sauce.

In search of good fried clams in the NYC/Long Island area

I had to break down and get some fried seafood yesterday. I was having a craving. We ended up going down to Hampton Bays and went to the only place that was open on dune rd. Turns out Sundays on the Bay is the old Sunwaters. It is now owned by the Oaklunds people. It was just okay. Service was pretty terrible. There was only one table who had just gotten their food, and all the other table cloths were dirty and we had to wait for a table to be made up. The guy had to read the two specials off of a paper, which always annoys me. The grilled shrimp caesar salad was underdressed. The lobster roll was not to mayonnaisy and not overly oniony, which I was happy about. The fried seafood combo was $24, which I thought was quite high. I thought they went for around $17-18, but maybe I haven't bought this in a while. It was not anything that I felt I had to go back for, so the search continues..

I haven't been on this site in a while so I am catching up. I am glad to know that it's not that bad. I will definitely try it again but not order the soup. I remember having a great new england clam at LLK. I miss that deli on rt 58 which was the polish place that made hero sandwiches. They had great soup. Now it's a nail place. If you know where I can get good soup to take for lunch let me know. I think I will not be going back to Buoy One, RH which I tried and tasted good at the time, then I got a big stomach ache. Ate the coconut shrimp and the fried clams. Wish there was a good fish market by us. I have to trek down to the Ponquogue Bridge in HB to to to Cor-J's for fish!

As Ina Garten says, " How bad could THAT be?" lol

You are right Coll, and I did try that. Never would have known about it unless my neighbor told me. It is in such an obscure spot, you really have to be told exactly where it is or you will drive right by. The ladies that work there are very nice. I never think of it because it is so out of the way. I'm glad they are getting enough business to do dinner. Do you know the corner by Main St Riverhead next to Tweeds across from the luncheonette? Do you know that they've recently put a sign in that window saying Dark Horse Restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Do you know anything about it or does anyone? Speaking of Tweeds, the big burger (bison or regular) was delicious, even though I think it was twenty dollars but you can get a smaller size one for less. Haiku, the relatively new Sushi place is okay, better than the new one that opened in Home Goods shopping center, but of course I'd rather go to Kotobuki, Hauppauge.

LI Strawberry festivals?

Speaking of Bayview, you have to try their goatmilk soap products. It's a white bottle with maroon lettering. It's in their backroom. They make nice gifts if you get a few different products. Guess what? This year my tomatoes didn't do much of anything. I got them at Glass Greenhouse in Jamesport.

Not to miss on Long Island, anything goes

Hi Coll! I agree with you about the Foccacia Oven. It was immaculately clean and the Italian lady gave it such a nice touch. My friend ordered a salad and asked her to put some slices of their grilled eggplant. The dressing was superb. I think it's the salad that comes with the gorgonzola. On another thread I read that you knew of the best place for pizza in Riverhead. Is it Julia's? I've been going to Caruso's for the convenience but I'd much rather go with what you like. I can see we have the same taste from comments of yours that I've read. The place next to Walmart scares me. I actually went to Rocky Point and in the Kohl's shopping center next to Michaels is a pizza place called Pompeii. I stopped there once and got a pie with eggplant and ricotta and I quite liked it if you are ever around there. What I've always been looking for on the east end (north or south forks) is a pizza with seafood on it. No red sauce. It could be shrimp or clams or whatever. Actually if anyone knows of anybody who does that in Suffolk I'd be interested to know.

wayside market, southold (long island)

I did try it a long while ago and it was good, but I still can't deny my favorite burger is from Magic's Pub in Westhampton. The guy from there went and did them at JT's place in hampton bays. they were good too years back. don't know if they still are.

North Fork Table and Inn - so SALTY!!!!

i would try it again. in my opinion, they never should have succumbed to restaurant week. it's no fun for anyone.

How do you like your Matzoh Brie/Fried Matzoh?

we always had it savory, but now i think i'm going to make it tomorrow (haven't had it in over a year) but with a dash of cumin. how bad could that be? My husband eats his eggs with a sprinkle of cumin. Maybe I could get him to eat matzo brei with me again!

Recipes with Swiss cheese

thank you Dish! I was thinking one could throw hard boiled egg if they wanted as well.

You know, I just love swiss cheese in my quiche:

in the frozen pie crust put in whatever green vegetable you like (squeezed out frozen spinach, or cooked broccoli or zucchini or whatever) then grate in a baby swiss or regular, pour in some beaten eggs mixed with a little cream to fill the shell. You really could throw any vegetable, sauteed strips of red pepper for color...this bakes at 350 til done. it's so good the next day for lunch even room temp

Recipes with Swiss cheese

I love to shred swiss (recently I bought emmentaler) over a salad that I make with boiled red new potatoes cut in halves, cherry tomatoes halved, haricots verts blanched, and tuna flaked in. The warm potatoes melt the cheese a bit. You swirl a bit of olive oil and sprinkle some salt, pepper, and even parmesan cheese if you like. Finish with a bit of paprika. This could be put out in a large bowl for company or pack it in little tupperwares for those that are going to the beach. The green beans give a nice tender crunch. You could also throw in some chives chopped finely.

Share your steak marinades!

This is what I've been doing and it's come out fabulously. I will tell you to use these ingredients whisked together and then at the bottom I will tell you what else to use depending on what you are making:

worcestshire sauce
apple cider vinegar
black pepper
garlic salt
cayenne
cumin
coriander
onion powder
oregano
hot paprika
olive oil

Okay: for lamb, you use the above and you could also sprinkle a little ground ginger and turmeric if you have.

For rib eye and skirt steak: whisk above but use grated fresh ginger and press fresh garlic in there. Also add a little soy sauce. You don't have to use the soy sauce if you are allergic.

For awesome boneless short ribs or even whatever steak you like, use this recipe and not the above list:
ketchup
soy sauce
crushed red pepper
salt and pepper
tonkatsu sauce (by kikkoman found in oriental groceries. this is the key ingredient!)
minced fresh ginger root and garlic
oregano
onion diced small

on the grill, i think you will love how these come out.

all the meat needs is a crisp salad of cucumbers tomatoes and feta and some warm pita bread. our favorite is to spread a yogurt sauce that i make onto the pita before we add the meat. this is greek plain yogurt like fage, with a tidbit of sugar (you could leave it out if you must), a sprinkle of dill, and a dash of paprika. lately i've been putting a dab of Heinz Salad Cream, which is sweet and then you don't need the sugar. You could use sour cream if you don't have the greek strained yogurt. you could also sprinkle some garlic powder in this sauce if you want more flavor but you can do without. enjoy!

I am so glad y had a good time. I have yet to go. Which is your steakhouse of choice? I hear so much of Brook and Porters.

In search of good fried clams in the NYC/Long Island area

Coll, have you gone to the Northside recently? I went twice over the last couple of years and I can't say I felt good about dropping my money there. I really hated the bisque. At the time, the two crabcakes came to over twenty dollars and I was just disappointed. It's so close to my house and I would love to run over there and sit on the porch, since there is NOTHING good in this area, but I haven't been able to bring myself to try again. Same with Cooperage, which isn't that great shakes. Just wondering since you are from out here. Thanks.

LI Strawberry festivals?

I love their tomatoes! I get them every year, however haven't been this year, because i've been growing my own. I'll have to remember his strawberries next June. I have to say, I spent twelve dollars on a box of nectarines from Wickhams and was not that pleased.

Best fried clams, lobster, chowder in long island?

I love the New England Clam Chowder at the Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck-on the North Fork of Long Island. They do not have it on the menu every day, unfortunately!

Best fried clams, lobster, chowder in long island?

Hmm. I went right after you and I got a big bellyache after the fried clam strip platter. I can't remember the name, but it was that walkup joint across from the boat where you order and then you wait til they call your number. I did like the coleslaw, although it tasted like the kind from a container, not homemade.

Two thumbs up for Antares Cafe!

I had heard that they had fired everyone from last year and were starting over. When I went prior to the closing, it was BEYOND horrible! Starting from the plastic soap dispenser in the bathroom (really, for a place with that kind of interior, I have better soaps in my own house!), to the food. where do I start? the salad had nothing in it but sand, the gnocchi had the worst presentation i've ever seen. floating in oily sauce with scattered black olives. ugh. the service? our waitress never once came over after she dropped the food, and we had to beg for her attention in trying to get the check. total waste of money and i expected so much more, from the hype. nothing makes me want to try it again. too bad, because it's a lovely setting.
