Cheapish resto with private room for 20?

Hi chowhounders!

I am planning a birthday party for 20 invitees and we are looking for a venue that would be private or semi private. Downtown would be preferred but we would be willing to travel of easily accessible by TTC. Not fussed on the type of food but the main thing is that it is tasty. Mains around $20 or
under would be great.

Any reccos? We need to make reservations soon. Thanks in advance!

Suggestions for a casual after-work party for 75 ppl?

Hi Chowhounders,

I am looking for a venue where I could host 75 people to celebrate an office accomplishment.

Criteria
- easily subway accessible
-a private (ish) area that could host 75 people
-good appetizers to share.

I was given the suggestion of Philthy McNasty's on Eglington and... meh, don't love this. Any thoughts? Or ideas for special places that might fit the bill?

Thanks in advance!

Tasting menu, private room, bachelorette party

right now it is going to be between 8 and 10 people. So we wouldn't need a huge private room or take over an entire restaurant.

With that in mind, it is probably easier not to have not get a banquet permit.

What are your thoughts on DNA? Their tasting menu looks interesting but I don't know anything about the restaurant? Definitely open to other suggestions. Just want to make it a memorable meal.

Tasting menu, private room, bachelorette party

You do bring up a good point. I think she was just planning on paying for it but because I am not familiar with Quebec liquor laws, can she bring her own? Are there corkage fees usually?

Tasting menu, private room, bachelorette party

Hi Chowhounders!

My dear friend is getting married and we are planning the send off. We are looking for something more glam then baby oiled men in questionable garments.

We are hoping to get a private room in a great restaurant where we would be able to have a tasting menu of 4+ dishes for approx $150/person for food only. (Wine will be covered by the hostess).

Any suggestions of somewhere that might fit the bill for a memorable night?

Thanks in advance!!

Korea town and Korean food virgins!

These are great suggestions!! I will be sure to tell you what we had.

I am really looking forward to Friday night now there there are so many things to try!

Korea town and Korean food virgins!

Hi Chowhounders...

I am embarassed to admit... my boyfriend and I are total Korean food virgins. We have decided that we are going to travel there this fall and want to get a taste of the food we will be eating and well... don't really know where to start.

So this Friday we are going to go to Koreatown for our first of potentially many Korean dinners.

What I am looking for:
1. A restaurant recommendation in Koreatown... your favorite,
2. What we should have. Keep in mind we are new to it, so start us off easy.

Thanks for your help!

Pub for small reunion? Maybe with a private area?

Hi there,

I am trying to organize a reunion of about 10-15 people in a pub setting somewhere downtown Toronto. If there is a private room, great, if not just need to be able to reserve tables.

Last year we went to the old Fionn MacCool's at King and Bathurst which was fine, but looking for something a bit more fun and interesting!

Thanks!

Yorkville lunch: good, and not a million dollars

Hi all,

Looking for a spot for a nice lunch on Friday. Not looking for a marathon meal, but something simple, well made and not going to require me to mortgage my place. Anywhere from Bloor and Jarvis and Bloor and St George. Don't want to have to travel too much.

Thanks!

Dinner with Mom: looking for very nice restaurant

Hi All,

My mom is in town this weekend and would be characterized as restaurant fanatic. Have taken her to Scaramouche and Canoe, which she loved.

I have reservations Friday at Buca, but am looking for a reco for Saturday night dinner.

I was thinking Madeline's but maybe you know of another good option?

Thanks in advance!

Buca or Scaramouche?

I have been to both and honestly wouldn't be able to choose one of them other the other foodwise, however ambience wise they are quite different.

If you are looking for lively, Buca is your bet.

Romantics will love Scaramouche because of the views and the lighting.

Do mix it up and give Buca a shot. It does get a bit noisy though!

Soho: post-dinner drinks with mothers

I was thinking about Monday room, but apparently these women want to do cocktails... danger zone...

Soho: post-dinner drinks with mothers

Hi All,

My mother and her girlfriends (40s-50s) are visiting from out of town and I am drawing a blank on where I can take them for post-dinner drinks. Eating at Balthazar tomorrow night, and they are looking for a fun time afterwards. Not-too-trendy would be the ticket I guess, but somewhere with a good ambiance or something you definetly can't fine in the 'Burbs!

Thanks!

Lazy girl emergency: Pie Dough

Thanks everyone. I am going to try to SLM option but if feeling up for it, i might acutally make 3 smaller pies with all of the different options. Sure hope no one is acutally hungry by the time dessert rolls around... :)

Lazy girl emergency: Pie Dough

Hi everyone,

For this weekend, I am making pumpkin pie. I have a great recipe already but don't want or have the time to make the dough, and defintely don't want to use the crisco pre made shells.

Anyone know of somewhere that sells premade pie dough, either needing to be rolled out or in a pie tin already?

Thanks!

Brunch: Mom is meeting boyfriend

Hi all,

So my mother will be imeetin my boyfriend of the first time and I am looking for a nice place to take her for brunch. Price doesn't really matter. I would go with Balthazar's brunch but have taken her there before.

Any suggestions? Preferrably around SoHo but not too worried if we have to travel.

Thanks!

Quick takeout lunch at Yonge-Bloor

Hi there!

I am looking for a place around Yonge and Bloor where I can go grab lunch and bring it back to my office. Don't want to walk too far or spend too much money, but don't want to get stuck in a food court rut either. Not picky on ethnicity of food. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

La Brehandaise - Creperie Bretonne

I don't think that they have crepes Suzette, which is more of a Parisien dish then a Breton crepe dish. But you never know :)

La Brehandaise - Creperie Bretonne

My boyfriend and I went 3 weeks ago. He ordered the bruch galette, and it was very well portioned. Service was good and very pleasant.

Can I suggest the butter and sugar crepe for dessert? I spent my summers with family in Britanny growing up and this was the best crepe beurre sucre I have ever had on this side of the Atlantic!

Apres Dinner Drinks

Hi Chowhounds,

This weekend my boyfriend and I will be visiting Chicago. I have dinner reservations for 9pm at Sepia (good choice, bad choice? let me know) and I am looking for a place for drinks afterwards. Not a club, but preferably a lounge either around Sepia or near the Magnificent Mile (where we are staying.) Any tips, help, suggestions would be more then appreciated!

Thanks!

BRITISH FOODS...chocolates etc.

I saw it at the CNE too and was OVER THE MOON happy that they had Battenburg cake. Too much of a pain to acutally bake, and an absolute joy to eat! I am going to have to check out their shop

ISO Great Place for a Breakfast Date

Auntie's and Uncle's at College and Lippencott (just east of Bathurst). Cool vibes, really good food. Lots of other people on breakfast dates!

Chef of India ( A Review )

I went with my SO about 2 months ago, and it took us 3 hours to eat. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that we were waiting for someone who was 30 minutes late, but even after our guest sat down, it took another 30 minutes to order a drink and then an hour and a half to have 4 dishes served to us. It was verging on the rediculous.

Which is too bad, because it sounds like it used to be a good place.

ISO: Halibut Cheeks

I love, love halibut cheeks. But have to restort to buying them at the Granville Island Market when in Vancouver.

Has anyone found any in Toronto? Or know of a fish monger who could source them? The kind I am looking for are skinless and not the kind that are barbequed in Japanese restaurants (althought those are also very tasty).

Any suggestions??

Chinese Soup Dumplings aka Xiao Long Bao in Toronto

I am looking for Shanghai style soup dumplings. These are the dumplings where soup is cooked with meat inside the dumpling, not dumplings served in soup.

I have tried Asian Legend and Chinese Traditional Bun on Dundas, both were good, but looking for more suggestions. Sadly Mother's Dumplings doesn't serve them!

Thanks!

Girls Night Out: Spanish or Portugese

Hi everyone,

I have a girlfriend visiting in a couple of weeks and we are looking for a good Spanish or Portugese restaurant for a little celebration.

Here are the criteria:
-Anywhere south of Bloor, but east of Dufferin would be preferable.
-A nice patio would be great
-And if there is sangria, then we are in business!
-Price point around $40 before drinks per person.

Any suggestions?
