Hutch's BBQ in Pasadena--it's changed, seriously

Recently got transferred to Pasadena. I had tried Hutch's years ago when it was godawful.

I was shocked when my co-workers wanted to go there for lunch, but was pleasantly surprised by how good the food is now. I tried tortilla soup and brisket sandwich with garlic potatoes and red beans and rice. Everything was perfectly seasoned. Brisket was not especially smoky, but that's how it goes for LA BBQ.

Would pass on the desserts, though, nothing special.

Very weird relief carving of The Last Supper in the back room.

Briganti in South Pas

Spaghetti w/clams had the ultimate al dente texture, miraculously suspended at the point where brittleness ends. I once read a quote that Bix Beiderbecke's trumpet sounded like a girl saying yes. That's how these noodles tasted to me.

Caramel cheesecake was also a knockout, light and delicate, at least 500 thread count.

Pizza was unremarkable. Lately, I have been fixated on the Roma pizza at Charlie's Trio. That crust is something else...

BEST BEEF NOODLE STEW SOUP IN CHINATOWN?

Think Mandarin Deli in the same shopping center as Pho 79 is your only option, since this is a Northern dish and most places in Chinatown serve Cantonese.

Lunch near Loyola Marymount?

Going there for a seminar. Thanks.

Chicken at FuRaiBo

On Colima, W of Fullerton, same shopping center as In N Out & Curry House.

Entrees at Filling Station?

I know I'll be having apple pie, but which non-dessert items are trying?

Cooked items at Hamakawa?

Going there with a group, some of them are non-sushi eaters. I know I liked the tempura a lot last time I was there. What are some of the other good cooked items on the menu? Thanks.

New Mr. Baguette opened today in Monterey Park

Has anyone tried the pastries? Or the pork with hint of lemongrass?

anyone been to Sohoju in Little Tokyo?

I would never go back just because, unlike traditional Korean restaurants, they do not serve panchans with your meal. For me, that's like a piranha with no teeth--sorta pointless.

Release my inner vampire: Craving for garlic (not Zankou)

Along these lines, many Chinese seafood places have a house special crab with fried minced garlic, maybe SEAFOOD VILLAGE is the best known.

ISO: anything worth checking out in Downey?

I worked in Downey for about a month, and concluded that the best thing there is the Mexican food.

AMAPOLA, 7414 Florence, has fish tacos with handmade tortillas.
EL AZTECA, 11917 Paramount, has good Mexican food, including alambres.
PARILLA'S CHE, 12121 Paramount, has excellent Peruvian roast chicken.

My co-workers recommended, but I did not try:

TOKYO GARDEN, 11946 Paramount, for sushi.
LE CHEF, 8724 Garfield, in El Paseo, for French fare.

Places I go when I don't want to drive to Little Tokyo:

Arcadia: KIYOSUZU, SAKANA on Duarte. Both have excellent fish, SAKANA is stronger on cooked items.

Monterey Park: GENKI on Atlantic. Service can be slow when things get busy.
