New Fish Taco Stand in Silver Lake
He's very intermittent. I saw him another Sunday but I haven't seen him consistently. You just have to take the attitude that you'll try him if he's there but don't go out of your way to find him. Sorry for my original enthusiasm setting unmet expectations.
Chile Relleno de Tamal de Huitlacoche
They are famous for the Chile en Nogada (chile peppers stuffed with pork and fruit in a walnut-pomegranate sauce).
I also like the enchiladas with 3 moles as well as their Queso Azteca appetizer.
I have never had a bad meal here.
Late-night dining near South Pasadena/Pasadena area
Pas/South Pas is a dead zone after 9:30. besides what's been mentioned:
Casa Bianca in Eagle Rock is open until midnight and the weekday crowd thins out after 9:30PM. note closed Monday.
Twohey's in Alhambra is open until midnight.
They are what they are (average and corporate) but both the Yard House and McCormack's and Schmick's are open late during the week.
New Fish Taco Stand in Silver Lake
I am just going by what Ricardo told me, that he would be there in the evening Thurs thru Sunday but I haven't confirmed that he actually has done that.
Vis-a-vis the condiment thing, I think it is just a question of space, I think he did the dressing out of functionality rather than a philosophical principle. He asked me at each step what I wanted and I am sure he would let you dress the taco yourself if you so desire. The condiments were good.
I want to reiterate that I haven't been back so maybe he is just a one-hit wonder.
New Fish Taco Stand in Silver Lake
Very good questions. This is a very minimalist operation to be sure with just one guy.
A stand would be a generous term. More of a wheel-less cart. Literally a deep fryer (not a comal de acero like some I have seen) and a couple of coolers for tortillas and drinks.
I can't speak to the type of fish but it comes out crispy and tender and the batter is not over-doughy but not too light either. He battered the fish and cooked them to order.
He also prepped the tacos with salsas himself. There is the cabbage, a spicy pico de gallo type salsa, the avocado salsa in a squirt bottle and the white sauce.
he didn't have the green salsa from Al Fenix that I love but the tacos still tasted great and everything seemed really fresh. I didn't try the shrimp but I will next time.
What's your favorite in Ensenada besides Al Fenix?
New Fish Taco Stand in Silver Lake
I just had some fish tacos from a guy who has a mini-stand set up in front of the laundromat across from the Casbah Cafe on Sunset and Hyperion. He is selling fish and shrimp tacos, Ensenada-style for $2.50.
They are the first fish tacos I've had in LA that compare favorably to the Tacos al Fenix stand in Ensenada, which is my gold standard. Incidentally, his name is Ricardo and he is from Ensenada.
He is planning on being there Thursday through Saturday in the Evenings and Sunday in the late afternoon/evening.
Dan Sung Sa (Korean Gastropub) - Perceptor's Report
Is that English language menu new?
Every time I've been the last 4 years I've just had to have some sort of negotiation of sorts about what I want. Sometimes I get and other times it is something else (but usually good).
Part of the fun.
Taco Truck Crawl Suggestions
Taco Zone. The suadero indeed. Also their horchata and carnitas are first rate.
falafel/shawarma stands
Try Falafel Arax on Santa Monica Blvd and I think Normandie. The shawarma is very good.
Carambouche in LA area
I have knowledge that Europane Bakery in Pasadena has made that as a special order once for a friend. I don't know how cheap it would be or if they would do it again but it is worth asking Sumi.
Quick and good Saturday lunch in Pasadena or South Pasadena
It's actually only 3 blocks from the Lake street station.
Quick and good Saturday lunch in Pasadena or South Pasadena
Europane. Can't do better in Pasadena.
Hot cereal at Europane
I am an ultra-regular at Europane and friends with Sumi. I asked some of the servers whose opinions I trust and they all uniformly hate it and have warned me away from trying it.
Not everything is to everyone's taste though....
Try the egg salad sometime.
local siverlake
I live nearby and I liked it the couple of times I've gone. The sloppy joe is pretty good - the prices are more reasonable for dinner than lunch. Plus it is BYOB.
Taco Truck Crawl Suggestions
The vampiros at the Tacos Sinaloa in Highland Park on Monte Vista and something like Ave 54.
Also the suadero and horchata at Taco Zone on Alvarado next to the Vons between Susnet and Glendale.
What else at Phillipes is good besides the sandwiches?
The potato salad was already mentioned. I would add the banana cream pie (a pie I am not usually a fan of).
Canter's Redux
I love Canter's. Yeah I have had better deli food but I have also had a lot worse. Most of all, it's the only deli that seems to still be a vibrant institution and not a museum of a dying culture.
Those black and white cookies are pure nostaligia for me.
pasadena recs, please?
If you are in Pasadena, you need to go to Europane Bakery either for breakfast or lunch. It's the best place in Pasadena and maybe the best bakery in LA. You'll find alot of posts on it at chowhound. Get the egg salad and a fruit-containing pastry. It's 2 blocks East of Lake on Colorado. Easy walking distance.
Daisy Mint is a good choice. Next to the playhouse is a decent coffee shop, Zona Rosa whch has great Mexican chocolate drinks.
Pasadena is not great for adventuresome eating so your friends will be fine.
Anything else you'll have to drive to. You and your friends might like Zelo Pizza which is a 15 min drive East of Pasadena on the 210 in Arcadia.
Burns Night Supper -- preferrably in OC but beggars cannot be choosers
Can't speak to quality or if it's even open but there is a place in Burbank called the Buchanan Arms.

Best Korean Dukbokki
I can't claim it's the best one or anything but I like the version at Dan sung sa on the corner of 6th and berendo.
what would you like to see open in silver lake/echo park?
The bar used to be Johnnie's Bar, one of my favorites. DO you know anything about what bar is going to replace it?
do any bars still have decent, cheap drinks??
If we are including the Buccaneer - which is definitely a locals hang-out- than we should also include the Rancho in Altadena which is also cheap, stiff and local heavy. Very Cheers-like in that people have their own stools and such.
But I think the OP was looking more for hip and trendy bars that serve more high quality cocktails (fresh juices, ingredients, etc) than necessarily stiff ones.
Also in both Sierra Madre and Pasadena is Lucky Baldwins for a good beer selection.
Looking for a Cuban restaurant with superior Vaca Frita
Miami style Cuban food in general is hard to find in LA.
I haven't had it there but try El Cochinito on Sunset and Micheltorena. Their lechon asada was pretty decent (moist, flavorful, etc) so maybe the vaca frita is good too. The arroz y frijoles were OK, which is better than I can say for most Cuban places in LA. Lousy cafe cubano though. Can't have everything....
Where can i get a great taco?
The one on York and Ave 54 is called El Pique and their al pastor tacos are some of the best in the city. Much better than anything on the Estrella truck IMO. The asada and the lengua are good too.
Another truck that deserves a big shout out is Taco Zone on Alvarado by the Vons just South of Glendale Blvd. They have awesome suadero, chorizo, and carnitas and they make their own very tasty horchata.
do any bars still have decent, cheap drinks??
The HMS Bounty in K-town has pretty cheap cocktails that are made pretty well.
Alot of the bars around Echo Park/Silver Lake/Downtown have $3 Dewars specials somewhat regularly.
Footsie's in Cyrpess Park is OK priced.
But it's true that in the neighborhood you want, you are going to get what you pay for generally.
Affordable food/drinks with coworkers
My coworkers and I are going to go out for dinner and drinks tonight but we don't want to take out a loan. We are mixed between vegetarians and omnivores and mixed Asian and non-Asian. In the past the Korean tavern Dan Sungsa has worked well but we are sick of it.
Other ideas include Carousel but there are limited drink options that are too pricey.
Mosyt of the tapas-style places I can think of are also too pricy.
We are coming from Pasadena but anywhere in NE LA is fine: downtown, K-town, Pasadena, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Gelndale, etc.
Any ideas?
Europane Musts?
it is a mixed meat meatloaf made from pork and beef. it is very good.
Today that had these marzipan-peach tarts that were amazing.
Europane Musts?
Yes, there are usually 2 or 3 different kinds that vary seasonally and even daily. My favorite are the Meyer lemon macarons but they are rare. I have seen hazelnut, espresso, lavender, rose water and probably others I can't recall at the moment.
Pasadena - cheese
Roma is great but be prepared for the owner, Rosario. he is a true character and always looking to push something on you.
