Best Indian food in DC?
As many have said, Rasika is amazing. Bombay Bistro in Rockville is also pretty solid.

What's for dinner? Part XXI
Salmon cakes with sour cream & dill sauce, rice pilaf, and spinach. Mmmm.
Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good
Potato chips and A1. Mmmmmm. Salty deliciousness.
ISO whole coconuts (Rockville/Bethesda)
Have you tried Whole Foods? I've never noticed them there myself, but I may have overlooked 'em. Seems like a likely place to try.
ISO whole coconuts (Rockville/Bethesda)
I've seen them at the Wheaton and Rockville Safeways from time to time, but not consistently. Giant stocks them sometimes, I think...
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
I have a relative who enjoys eating lima beans doused in ketchup.
Steaklovers ... when did you first fall in love with steak?
The baked steak sounds terrifying.
Steaklovers ... when did you first fall in love with steak?
I can't remember a time when I DIDN'T like steak. it was definitely one of my favorites when I was a kid. I was sort of an oddball child when it came to food, though. Desserts were never my thing. I preferred steak, scallops, salads, brussels sprouts, and spinach.
The only time I remember avoiding steak was after I choked on a piece when I was in second grade. I was afraid of choking again, but the next time my dad cooked steak I couldn't resist the flavor.
What do you wear while you cook?
I'll usually just put on an apron over whatever I'm already wearing. If I'm wearing something I'm particularly fond of, or if the food promises to be extra-spattery, I'll change into old jeans and a t-shirt.
Cafe Atlantico Dim Sum brunch
I've done both the tasting menu and the a la carte, and I honestly don't think you can go wrong either way. The dishes are all so good! I did enjoy the tasting menu experience. Things were brought out at a good pace, and our waiter explained what everything was, so I'd lean towards going with that.
Starbucks sucks, but I stil go there
I'll drink Starbucks, but I prefer Caribou when it comes to coffee chains. I think their coffee tastes much better.
Virginia Wines
Barboursville is a favorite. I love their Chardonnay and Octogon. I also really like Rockbridge. They make some tasty reds.
Great food near Verizon center
Teaism at 8th and D. They have great lentil soup there at this time of year. They also have tasty bento boxes and egg rolls, sandwiches soup... and so many great teas! I love their chai. It's very gingery and warming.
"Dirty" recipes that are crowd pleasers
My mom pulled a similar trick at a holiday party once. She put the cake in a plastic flowerpot, and put fake poinsettias in the cake. She presented it to the hostess as a gift, and she stowed it in a back room because the house was full of beautiful real ones. Mom later got her fake from the back room and put it in the middle of the table, and it was moved off again.
At the end of the meal, Mom pocketed a spoon and went into the back room, making something of a show of looking dejected. The hostess followed her, and found her sitting cradling the fake poinsettia. Mom then said she felt so bad about bringing a fake plant when the house was full of real ones, saying it made her feel so bad that she could eat dirt. She then dug into the flowerpot and ate a big spoonful.
The hostess was horrified until Mom started laughing & explained that the fake plant was indeed cake. :) Everyone thought this was a great prank (and they enjoyed the cake, too).
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
Chicken a la King. I never liked it. Probably never will.
Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family
My mom makes awesome frikadeller. It's not something that I knew any other family to make when I was growing up. A pity, because it's delicious. My parents, especially my dad, have a deep fondness for Denmark, explaining why it wasn't uncommon in our house.
I've never made it myself, but I'm going to have to have some soon now that I'm thinking about it. So tasty.
Soft beets
They smelled fine, and no oozing. Just the softened texture. I went ahead and pickled them, and they turned out fine. Thanks for the advice!
Easiest recipe you cook and love
Salmon with Old Bay. I drizzle on a little olive oil and a little white wine, then I shake Old Bay all over it & sprinkle with chives. I bake at 300 for about 30 minutes (depending on thickness of fillet). It's delicious with rice!
Dried Basil--Are you a fan or not? If yes, how do you use it?
I bought a jar when I got my first apartment, and I only used it once or twice. The taste of fresh is so bright and delicious--I go with fresh every time.
Why won't my sauce stick to my pasta?
I stir the water right before adding the pasta--that seems to counteract the foaming.
Soft beets
I was just about to boil some beets for pickling when I noticed that they had gone soft in the fridge. Can I still use them, or is it safer to toss them?
banana peppers - what to do with them all?
I tried this with goat cheese and puff pastry. It was really good! Thanks for the idea!
