Beer low in Gluten/Gluten light?

We are in the process of testing gluten levels in beer. Results for 4 beers are posted now, including Corona Extra. And results for 6 more tests will be posted soon. There are surprising results for Stone IPA, Negra Modelo, and Heineken, as you can see on the site.

Xanthan Gum

I think Pam MacD's gluten free stores sells it. But that is up in Burbank and not cheap. I bought some online from Ebay which was waaaaay cheaper than any store I saw it for sale.

Near Hotel Cafe?

And the District is right next to the Mercantile. Good Yorkshire Puds. Los Balcones just reopened with a new menu and design. Maybe you could check that out and share a review?

Oh and Isn't there a Bodega wine bar on Vine and Sunset? Not sure of their food though.

Dinner and drink recommendations in Eugene, OR

I know that Eugene is a bit away from Portland, but I thought this board might have to recommendations for some great eats in Eugene. My husband and I will be visiting there in a couple of weeks.

We like nearly every kind of food, aside from Indian myself. We'd like something local/regional or unique to the area if there is something that comes to mind. We don't really want a super high end establishment, but we don't have to eat fast food either.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner recommendations are great. We are from Los Angeles, so we are pretty spoiled for choice here when it comes to different Asian cuisine.

And if you have any good wineries or breweries in the area that you love, we'd love to hear them as well. We are going to hit a few wineries on our drive down from Portland. But if there are some in the area, we would be happy to know where we should hit.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

What's hot in LA???

You can get La Break bread in some grocery stores in London. I can't remember which chain. I find their bread hard as a rock and overrated.

You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...

Elephant ears. The fried dough with sugar and cinnamon on top that you get at fairs and carnivals in the Midwest. If I am wrong, please steer me toward the nearest Red Barn.

Recommendation in Hollywood pre theater

Dillon's is right on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. You're not going to get much closer. Diverse pub grub menu at reasonable prices. All beers on tap are $3 all the time. If there's a big game on it could be loud and crowded. I've seen a Pantages buffet toward the back of their restaurant that didn't look exciting at all. But I've had several meals there and all were fine. Not foodie great. But you can't beat the price, convenience and beer specials. It's an option in the area.

Are any of these places in Hollywood good deals (a ?)

I've used a cert for Miceli's and Pig and Whistle quite often. I like both places. Miceli's can be fun with the live music and old-school feel. I'd say it would be tough to spend enough at Cafe Audrey because that's more of a coffee shop with sandwiches and cookies. Cat and Fiddle would be great if it's warm and you can sit outside. Great patio. More traditional Brit food if you're into that. Le Croissant club feels like of of a tourist place with $3 wine and pictures of the food on the menu. Just by the pictures, I've chosen not to eat there. I hope that helps a bit.

THE VETTING ON MIRACLE MILE HAS BEGUN! Organic to Go's $8 prefab cafeteria tuna salad sandwiches and the wretched Toshi's have become the first victims of the far superior FancyTrucks™!

That is the name that Organic to Go opened up as downtown this week. They opened on Wednesday, though, I've not tried them out. I figured I would give them a few days to iron out the wrinkles.

Heading out to San Gab Valley for Chinese...Clueless

I am revisiting this topic. I am just wondering if there's something new since the last posts. Or if these are still the classics/standards and the best options to choose from. Thanks for your help.

PS. We're not concerned with Crispy Aromatic Duck. We've searched high and low and found we need to go to London to get this. Thanks though.

Dowtown Las Vegas Dirt-Cheap eats

Hello all,
The husband and I are heading to Vegas in late December and we're staying downtown. We're on a very strict budget, hence staying downtown, so we are searching for your best dining deals. We eat all sorts of food, and will probably be dining all hours.

So if you know of any specials during special hours, please share.
Or if you know of some cheap eats all hours please let us know.
Also, happy hour specials would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, we're looking for some very cheap dining options. We will have a car, so we don't mind venturing away from downtown a day or two. But we'd really like more downtown options. We are well aware (and fond of) Ellis Island's food specials. Anything along that lines would be great.

Thank you in advance for your helpful suggestions.

DineLA- running reviews of places so far

Went to Ketchup this week. We wanted something quirky, fun and close to home. Big mistake. Food was dry, lacked individual flavors and just downright unimpressive. Service and presentation was nice. But ultimately, I am there to eat, so the food needs to be good.

I've never eaten there before (and do not watch "The HIlls" so I did not know it had been on the show) and I won't eat there again. Not impressed at all. Anyone can mix some ketchup with wasabi or maple syrup. It's not something to base a restaurant off of. I wanted to ask for mayo for my fries, but I figured it was taboo. Oh well. Live and learn.

Mozza: the emperor's new clothes

I totally agree. Husband and I went ther for a special occassion. I did a ton of research on what were the top dishes and what the "don't miss" selection were. I didn't realize that a salt shaker came on every entree. It was awful. I admit it, I fell for the hype. I won't make that mistake again. We had several dishes and nothing impressed. We were so disappointed. I don't understand the rave over this place. I guess some people just love the taste of salt. I prefer food with a bit more charisma. Mozza does not deliver.

What to order at Los Balcones del Peru

Agreed. The fried rice is delish! I was not impressed with the cookie they sell. It was a bit pricey and dry. But several people love it on this board.

Where to take young kids in Hollywood?

UWink in the Hollywood and Highland complex has video game screens at the table. Food is not great, but it's not funky either. Kids would fit in fine there.

Nickel Diner ?'s....

The bacon doughnut is good. Rather interesting how the flavor of bacon is actually supressed when you think it would be dominant. I would love to try their other sweeties as well.

As for walking around there, I would not recommend it. Go one more block east and you are on the edge of Skid Row. I know the neighborhood is coming around, but it's not quite there for me to walk around yet. I would rather play it safe than sorry. And I am not the type of person to be over cautious. I live in Hollywood and walk around at night by myself with no worries. Many people would not do that. My walk to Nickel dinner in the daytime was a bit worriesome -- confronting several gaggles of people I might not want to have to confront alone. And that was uring the day. It's completely up to you if you want to take the risk. But if it were me, I would not walk around there at night unless I was parked right out front and walking directly to the door. Just one person's opinion.

Best cheap canned beer

Fresh and Easy (some of them) sell beer called Taurino Cerveza in both cans and bottles. I can't remember the prices of the cans vs. bottles, Definately under $10 for 12 bottles or 18 cans. More like $6 to $8. I think the price vaires by store a bit.

Yes thank you for the information. I too, go by there every day and it just don't seem very appealing. I am not exciting about the hookah smoking outside.

I think they also have certificates avaialbe on now if you want to get a discount.

We'll see how long they last. They never seem to be too overly busy.

Kogi: Overrated Waste of Time

I totally agree. Not all it's cracked up to be. And I was not even frustrated by a long line. I waited maybe 10 minutes tops. The tacos were good, but did not blow me out of the water. I certainly would not have waited more than 30 minutes for them. If I had, and tasted the end result, I would have been more disappointed.

If it's near you and the line is short. go for it. But don't feel you have to chase these trucks all over town. You won't be missing a thing, really.
