Hostaria da Ivan

Just to report on our stay and meal at Ivan's great Hostaria near Parma. What a great experience! It started with a wonderful welcome, being shown to our perfect room and then followed by a few glasses of a great local sparkling wine personally recommended by Ivan sitting outside and enjoying the charming village. Then the meal- a fantastic antipasti platter- wonderful prosciutto, culatello, parmesan and bacon bites, and rosemary infused lard with fried polenta- I can still taste it now it was so good!! Follow this with a perfectly cooked pork liver and delicious ice cream and all served with a great local red wine at a very fair price. Yes this is the real deal. As for breakfast just stunning!!! Finally a quick visit to Ivan's little den of aged prosciutto and his incredible wine cellar. if you enjoy food and wine and do not want the high life go there and enjoy. You will not be disappointed.

Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulciano

Tips please! Any recommendations for great food in this area? We are not in to formal gourmet dining and much prefer local restaurants with atmosphere and good food- generally around 30-40 euros a head. Anything with a great view we love but not concerned with chic décor. We will have car .

thanks

Villages and food south of Bologna

Thanks so much- sounds just what I am looking for! What a great site this is!!

As you obviously know the area any thoughts on best eating places around Pienza and particularly any good value places to buy wine ( we are self catering )?

Villages and food south of Bologna

Yes sorry not very clear! I meant casual family type trattoria/ home cooking and no children involved so just two aged foodies!! Was thinking meal around 30-40 euros a head so not Michelin star type and not too formal. Accommodation maybe around 60-90 for a double room. Other alternative could be a good clean basic hotel in a character village with a good restaurant . We are driving on to Pienza ( any restaurant/ wine/ foodie tips for there also appreciated by the way ) so just a memorable stopover sought. Thanks in advance

Villages and food south of Bologna

Hi all

Looking for a country hotel / restaurant with rooms for one night stopover with great food ( or in village with good restaurant ) just south of Bologna- maybe within 30km?. Not expensive but good family atmosphere and preferably in a " scenic / historical" village. Any suggestions please? thanks Keith

Prague - casual but good food please

Thanks Vanderb- we went for a very casual and inexpensive lunch at U Zavesenyho- a real genuine local pub, great atmosphere and just what we wanted! Can also recommend the Louvre Cafe for another casual lunch but for a romantic special occasion the 7 course degustation menu a the restaurant at the U Zlate Studne hotel where we stayed ( and was just the perfect hotel in every way ) was very special- great food, great service and a fabulous view over Prague. Not cheap but worth it for the atmosphere?

Dinner in Paris- St Germain area

Looking for recommendations please for a special anniversary dinner in December- preferably St Germain area , authentic rustic French food, must have great cheese course ( my treat!), more Bib Gourmand rather than starred atmosphere and all about the food rather than the decor. Much prefer relaxed rather than formal atmosphere. Budget up to 100 euros per head including wine ( probably two bottles knowing us!!). Any good value lunches also of interest!

thanks

Vacationing in Loire valley for week

Chinon is definitely one of favourite towns ( for a typical french experience in good central location stay at Diderot if you can get in but not luxury with lifts etc!). Try L'Annees Trente or L'Oceanic if you prefer fish. Would also thoroughly recommend Diane de Meridor in Montsoreau ( great good value lunch menu and ask for table overlooking Loire). These are all good value and great food
Bon Appetit if not too late!

Normandy/Caen/ Bayeux

Yes ! Ttry Le BOUCHON DU VAUGUEUX in Caen ( great atmosphere great food but need to book as not expensive), Le Moulin de Jean in Cuves ( great!), Chez Francois in Genets, Littre in Avranches, Croix D'or in Avranches. i posted reply under Normandy last year. if in doubt go for Michelin Bib Gourmand listed ( not starred) restaurants and you won't go far wrong!

Bon appetit

Early Dinner near Gare du Nord on Sunday (Valentine's Day)

Brasserie Terminus Nord is always good and should be open on Sunday. I would have thought at that time no need to book with a bit of luck ?

Foodie looking for the real restaurants in Sicily

Sorry probably too late as we're just back from Sicily. Generally meals were all excellent but one real highlight- Da Angelo in Sinagra. Tucked away in stunning mountains and not exactly easy to find ( ask when you get to Sinagra) it's a real experience not to be missed! Not for the faint hearted or anyone looking to cut down on the quantities this is not for lovers of nouvelle cuisine! The spectacular anti pasti for two was enough to feed a family of four, the wonderful pasta, great grilled meat including suino nero, lemon ice cream, a plateful of local cheeses and a bottle of wine all for 30 euros a head- oh and then a complimentary hazlenut liqueur. Needless to say we didn't eat the next day but lived on the memory for the next few days. Just leave the choice to the boss and enjoy!

The other highlight was Spizzulio in Agrigento. A great wine shop/ wine bar. Simple local food , great wine and above all a really friendly owner passionate and knowledgeable about his local wine and produce. You will not be disappointed!
