Chinatown or similar cakes for a wedding

I got a couple Eldo's cakes for my wedding. They were done right on time, and the bakery was open to small customizations. The price was great- $80 for 3 cakes. The cakes served 42 people, and many people had second helpings. Note that this was in 2007, so YMMV? (No more recent recs)

Second note: We did do cake pickup, not delivery

I was there today too! The adobo pork was delicious. I'm wondering if we were there at the same time- did I ask you what you were eating and how it was? (There was a man there enjoying the pozole and I asked him...) wanted to get the pozole but my DC vetoed it in order to try other things..next time!

Herrs Heinz Ketchup Potato Chips

They have them at the Medford Ocean state job lot, $2 a bag. Just saw about 15 bags there, along with a few other flavours.

Herrs Heinz Ketchup Potato Chips

Unfortunately, about 6 weeks ago. I picked some up for a friend of mine. I still get the hot dog Herr chips there occasionally (guilty pleasure!), but haven't noticed whether they have recently stocked the ketchup ones. I'll be at MB on monday, and will try to remember to report back then. :-)

So That Was Annoying!

Juice is included in Cafe Fleuri's brunch, which runs $58 (albeit with a raw bar). Blue Room includes coffee/tea, but not juice.

So That Was Annoying!

I too was at Blue Room today for brunch. While I agree that it'd be nice to have juice included, I will add that the food was lovely- perfectly poached eggs, a nice tender spice rubbed brisket, thick cut bacon, and well spiced patas bravas. (The corn grits were a miss however, but my dc and I enjoyed the rest.)

Yaay, I'm so glad! I've never had the wonton noodle soup- is it pork or pork and shrimp?

Very nice! Have they changed much or has what's good always been good? (subject to interpretation, of course)

My DC and I went there recently- it was fantastic! Going by chowhound recs, we got and thoroughly enjoyed:

xlb
roast beef wrapped in scallion pie
curry dumplings
pea pod stems
3 cup chicken

and devoured it all. The xlb were quite well done that night...juicy, flavourful and thin skinned.

The service was friendly, I agree. The place was comfortable to sit in.

Lorenz Island Kuisine

My DC and I went there on sunday.

The good: the johnny cakes were excellent. Crisp, well fried, and slightly sweet. They also have cold, strong ginger beer that was very tasty. The boiled dumplings were good as well, with a nice chew to them.

The bad: Both of the entrees were fairly dreadful. The oxtail beef was a. tiny (I know tiny entree complaints often get dismissed as the cheesecake factory problem, but our portion seriously was. 4 small rounds the size of a large coin, and oxtail has a fair amount of bone). However, the small portion could have been over looked if it weren't for b. the oxtail being lukewarm, and ridiculously tough

The chicken curry was also mediocre. Lukewarm as well, and mostly bone. I adore the flavour of bone-in chicken, but some meat'd be nice too.

The meh: the side of rice and cabbage were ok. Nothing to write home about, but they sufficed as sides.

Shame, as the menu looked fantastic, and I really wanted to love this place.

Craigie on Main 10 course tasting review (Long)

I'm not sure, honestly. I know they have special events like the chef's whim, but I think the basic tasting menus are offered all days. They do state on the menu that letting them know is preferred when making reservations.

$115, yes, and not paired with wine, though they were good about a. suggestions b. bringing tastes/sample pours so we could try multiple ones before we settled on one.

Craigie on Main 10 course tasting review (Long)

One word: fantastic.

The service, the food, everything! It should be noted that I did not have trouble making the reservation over the phone or asking/receiving a quick list of the entrees the same day. We were there 7/7/2010. Now, to the food!

After much debate among the four of us, we settled on the tasting menu. They were flexible and worked with the small requests we had ( 1. no crustaceans 2. that the octopus and lamb looked fantastic, and if they could be worked in, fantastic. if not, cool).

We had:

1. Three Seafood Preparations:
-squid noodles. nuac chum
-house-smoked Sockeye Salmon, dijon-miso vinaigrette
-rillettes of house-smoked Bluefish, paddle fish caviar

The noodles were unusual-cool, a bit of a chew, and a delicate flavour.

2. Ceviche of Line-Caught Fluke
-lemon oil, sweet dried corn

Lovely- the lemon oil made this fresh and light

3. Crispy Tempura Dayboat Cod Cheeks
salsa verde, golden raisin-ver jussauce, curry oil

Tasty, well fried- might be a little sweet for some, especially early on.

4. Grilled Spanish Octopus
grilled cipollini onion, fresh hearts of palm and lemon salad, garbanzo bean puree

Octopus can be tricky and this was really tender.

5. House-Made Rabbit and Guanciale Agnelotti
mustard -sage jus

The rabbit stood out. Less the Guanciale, though the jus was mopped up with the ample chewy bread.

6. Slow Roasted Veal Sweetbreads
sen pa sat, smoked cinnamon, kohlrabi purée

We'd never had sen pa sat- for those that love dark greens, it was really good. One DC didn't care for the puree (too much of a bite with the sweetbreads), but others loved it.

7. Elysian Fields Lamb Three Ways:
Spice-Crusted Loin, Grilled Tongue, Confit Breast
navarin vegetables, sweet garlic purée

Fantastic. Cooked to MR, and my favourite part of the dish.

8. House-Made Sorbets
Strawberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, Plum

One to each of us- a nice, light palate cleanser.

9. Sheep’s Milk Yogurt Cheesecake
Matzo meal-pine nut crust, blackberry-tequila jam
-and--
Sour Milk Panna Cotta
coriander-cashew granola, banana puree. brown butter
-and Taza
Double-Chocolate Tart
espresso ice cream, hazelnuts
-and-
Creamy Anson Mills Corn Grits
demerara brulée, anise-hyssop ice cream, warm raspberry compote

One to each of us.The panna cotta was the best one, followed by the corn grits. None were terribly sweet, but we liked that as a group. I found the ice cream a touch grainy, but others didn't mind it.

10. Rhubarb and Hibiscus Mousse
Yogurt Foam

Nice, light fruity finish.

I have to commend the bar on creating both excellent cocktails and "mocktails". The mocktail had hibiscus and rhubarb syrup in it and was well balanced and flavoured. Tony presented the lamb three ways himself, and, as it was a birthday, there was a little card signed by him on the table. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Batch Ice Cream

The chocolate and cinnamon one is pretty good- delicate shards of both laced throughout the icecream. FYI- they sell it at the farmer's market in Fenway for 2 bucks cheaper than formaggio kitchen.

Bob's, Medford

So, having already been won over by their cold cuts (and this is probably very old news), the butcher shop does fantastic burger meat. ($3.49 a lb for 85%, nice red color, strands of really tasty looking ground beef). Top with their blue cheese and nom.

Agree on the pork- dry but delicious sauce. I should try the chicken next.
The guac is always a good bet though.

All Star 5/29

Went to All Star Saturday at 2pm with my DH.

It was a pleasant meal-
We ordered:

Baby spinach and goat cheese salad- not too over dressed, good sized to split
Grilled corn with poblano butter and cojita cheese- meh. There are better versions in boston, though it could be due to it not being corn season yet. Will try again later in the summer if they run it again (it was a special).
Burger special of the day-
They over cooked it the first time, but fixed it promptly and returned a perfectly cooked MR burger to the table, topped with bacon, fried onions, and a cheddar "fondue". According to one of the cooks, it was a modified bechamel with cheddar, done with and immersion blender. Pretty tasty.

Overall, solid and enjoyable.

Angela's Cafe

I've been to Angela's before (after seeing rave reviews from veteran 'hounds) and was blown away the first time I went there.

Last time was a mixed bag. We got there around 9pm on Saturday, and were seated relatively quickly.

We ordered:

Guacamole : fantastic! good chunks, fresh, not over mixed

Favoritos de Angela
Chicken Mole Gordita,
Tinga Tostada, Arabe Taco, Ceviche Tostada, and Al Pastor Taco.

- a general positive- the Ceviche was raved about. The Tinga Tostada got a meh- I suspect it was first prepped and suffered from that.

Mole with the pork loin- This was the dish that confused. Last time, it was amazing- rich complexity of the sauce that lingered, with the meat being tender, moist, and fantastic.

This time, however, the meat was dry. The sauce, had it been fantastic, could have helped redeem it, but the sauce seemed one note, compared to last time.

Has anyone else noticed this or did I just get unlucky?

Enough with the Workplace Candy!

Wow, Helena...never thought you'd be gender-biased in language. For shame. I'm disappointed, though I probably should know better than to expect much by now. Seriously, though?
"You can also enlist your boss’s help by asking him to create an informal office wellness program. He’ll be on board.."

Let's not make default, sexist assumptions about gender and power, please. Yes, tangential to the article, I realize, but so are your blatant stereotypes.

Winter goodness at Brown Sugar

I'm sure posters here are well aware of this, but I just wanted to post about the experience had the other night at Brown Sugar, Comm Ave.

We ordered the Khao Soi with beef and the Massaman Nua Moh-din, beef massaman in a clay pot. Both dishes were delicious, thick, warm, and comforting. The clay pot beef was tender and melty, and the Khao Soi had a good yet subtle hand with the spicing. We left full and pleased.
