Lunch in Austin
Heat shouldn't be too oppressive, but I understand. Right there near 2nd & Congress is a small trailer food court. The highlight is Turf N' Surf Po Boy. It's a converted maritime cargo box and Ralph, the chef, cooks up some of the best seafood in Austin. Next door is Kebabalicious, a trailer specializing in diner kebab. There's some shaded seating available.
Not too far away is Coreanos, doing the Korean fusion taco truck thing - they often park for lunch at 4th and Congress. And if you want to sit down and A/C, Second Bar & Kitchen in the new Austonian building does a nice lunch.
Kome?
FYI, Love Balls is temporarily closed,. They will reopen on June 1st at the 29th Street Ballroom, near the Spiderhouse at 29th & Guadalupe.
Meatball subs?
I have not had the meatball sub at Hog Island Deli, but I've had almost everything else, and I bet they have what you're looking for. I know they hit it on the bread - a nice, crusty Italian loaf.
15 bbq places in 7 days trip report and thanks for all the help!
What a wonderful report. Such dedication! I've been trying to plan a similar trip to KC and this is quite inspiring.
Glad you had fun in Central TX!!
Pulque?
I have seen a commercially bottled version called Pulque La Lucha at Specs before. Probably the same thing. No idea if they still carry it, or how authentic it is.
"Tiger" or "Rock" Shrimp in Austin???
Indeed, what a bunch of backwards yokels we are.
Chile Rellenos in Austin
Homero: I have not had the Elsi's relleno, but I have had their Salvadoran green bean special. It's a bundle of green beens around some poblano slices and cheese, battered & fried & served w/red sauce. It's seriously good. I'd bet the relleno is good too.
Barbecue Trip Report II (Also Long)
Have you been to J Mueller on S. 1st yet? Wed - Sun, open at 10:30. Damn fine.
Any good Greek food in Austin?
I have been buying their hummus & dolmas for months now (highly recommended), but had no idea they had a cafe. And it's right in our hood! Thanks!
Fried or Grilled Tacos
Dina:
No. Puffy tacos are primarily a San Antonio specialty, where uncooked masa dough (rather than a corn tortilla) is fried. When the dough hits the oil, it "puffs up," resulting in a bubbly, crispy shell. Some photos via Robb Walsh:

I think Angie's and Amaya's do what you suggest - fry thickish corn tortillas to order, and so I don't know that they're technically puffy tacos (but they are tasty).
Looking for a "Meat and Three" around the Austin area.
Indeed. We joke that Arkie's is actually the meat and "four minus one" - at any given lunch, they only have 4 sides, & it's easiest to order by telling them which one you don't want.
Fried or Grilled Tacos
At Dos Batos on W Anderson (nest to the Walmart), they serve tacos made with wood-grilled steak or veggies. They come on flour tortillas, and once filled and folded they are finished on the grill. It gives the tortilla a little smoky char and melts the cheese inside.
They don't fry them whole, but I've always loved the taco shells fried to order at Amaya's. I've never had a satisfactory puffy taco in Austin - I've tried the one at El Chilito & at Vivo, just OK.
Where to Get Farm Fresh Eggs in Austin Any Day of the Week
The Alexander Farm eggs are our favorite, and along with Wheatsville, you can find them at Fresh Plus (or at the fram in Del Valle, I believe).
Wheatsville also offers a couple of other options (Vital Farms, and another local producer that I forgot.) Honestly, pastured eggs are so much better, you can't really lose.
If you're interested, there's an annual tour of Austin's urban/backyard chicken coops. The next one is coming up in April. Check out http://fccooptour.blogspot.com/2011/08/join-fun-on-april-7th-2012-at-4th.html for more.
Marrow bones...
Bastrop Cattle Company? http://www.bastropcattlecompany.com/where-to-buy/shop-online#ecwid:category=781384&mode=product&product=6157419
You might try one of the farmer's markets (Peach Creek?) or maybe one of the remaining butcher shops (Lee's on W 38th or Longhorn Meat on MLK or Johnny G's on Manchaca).
Feb. Texas Monthly - The Greatest BBQ story ever told
I'm very glad John might get even more business, but if this means Franklin-type lines at JMueller, I will be ticked.
Off topic, but Texas Monthly seems to have really gone downhill since Evan Smith left. Lately it's been lots of "Slap another list of the 50 best something or another on the cover, people always buy those."
New Hot Pot Place on Anderson
Where on Burnet is this Black Sheep Lodge going? We live right around the corner and haven't seen anything. Is it the Nelson Puett real estate building? Or further north near Uptown Modern? We'd be very excited to get more info!
Raclette Cheese
Antonelli's also carries the Swissmar grills, I think. And if they have it in stock, try the Ogleshield. It's a British washed-rind cow's milk (Jersey) cheese, melts wonderfully like raclette. We loved it. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2007/11/the-art-of-aging-well/6332/
LOOKING for Ketchup chips in Texas
As mentioned, Walmart carries Herr's chips, but it seems to be only seasonally. I last saw the ketchup chips there this summer. Big Lots, of all places, often carries several varieties of Herr's and Utz chips, and I have bought the ketchup there as well.
Line at Franklin BBQ
Did anyone answer the original question?
The cutting block is on the opposite corner from the door, so if the line extends outside, there are probably 30 or so folks already waiting inside along the back and side walls. Depending on what they order, expect to wait another 20-30 minutes or more.
Too late for a good turkey?
Wheatsville Co-op is also selling Richardson Farms turkeys starting 11/18. No preorder needed they say (or pre-cooked Turkeys for $60, pre-order by 11/20).
Austin Burger Smackdown!
Mike's lost their lease. Think they're looking to reopen. Frankly, it was a good burger, but it only won the contest because all the Austin-area Aggies mobilized to support them.
Decent quiche?
Went to a potluck brunch last month and we brought a bacon florentine quiche from the Wheatsville deli case. It was a big hit.
Where is your favorite place to watch the UT game, have a good meal and get ice cold beer on tap?
Food at Cover 3 is decent. Others like it better than I do. I'll always love the Crown & Anchor. Good cheeseburger, good beer selection, Live Oak on special on Saturdays.
