Five Guys Coming to Middletown

The more junk you put on any burger the harder it is to handle. I have eaten at the Farmington and Avon 5 Guys and don't have a problem. Wood & Tap does have a decent burger but for a quick lunch I like 5 Guys.

Why doesnt Aunt Carries (Point Judith, RI) get more love?

I will be there tomorrow for an annual visit during a Rhode Island motorcycle ride. No...it's not the greatest place to eat but it is better than many. I will get whole belly clams, fries and a hot dog for dessert.

Best ice cream in CT

I vote for Salem Farms also. The cherry has big chunks in it and is GREAT. I also like Hallmark a lot...and Pralines and...you guessed it, I haven't found many ice cream shops where I threw the ice cream away. :)

Grote & Weigel, Hummel, Copaco -- where to buy in CT?

Grote & Weigel are available almost anywhere. Both the Stop & Shops I frequent (West Hartford & Newington) have them. As far as Copaco salamis, I believe they went out of business. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

New BBQ place in Farmington?

I stopped yesterday and had a PoBoy Brisket sandwich and potato salad. PoBoy was very good but skimpier than the brisket sandwhich. The tater salad was as someone else said...probably from Stop & Shop...but it was tasty. So now, I have had a taste of everything on their small menu and like it all. My favorite is a toss up between the ribs and the sausage. I guess that means another trip back to taste them both. :)

Once I convinced the young fella at Flaggstead that it was past opening time I got a sliced brisket sandwhich. Very tender and tasty. I tried the creamed corn and it was mediocre at best. Probably just dumped canned corn it a pot with a little spice. None of the sides I have had there were real good but so far the beans were the best.

Thumanns hotdogs in CT

Thanks I have never had Thumanns but I will give them a try. My favorite is Mucke's but tonight a friend is bringinfg his fave. He will stop on his way over at Martin Rosol's in New Britain for dogs and kellies which are also pretty good on the (charcial) grill.

Good luck... two of my former co workers had lap band done in the last year and both are very happy they did it. I guess I will have to start eating your share of BBQ now :)

I've ridden further for good BBQ Cindy. If you are ever in Bar Harbor try Mainly Meats. Some of the best BBQ I've ever had in New England.

New BBQ place in Farmington?

Yesterday was my first trip to Big W's and I was disapointed. The brisket was O.K. but the ribs and chicken were very dry and tasteless. Both Wood's and Flaggstead were better. The day wasn't a total loss because it was a nice 140 mile bike ride with a stop for homemade ice cream on the way home. :)

Oh ya... I didn't even taste the sauce. I forgot to take my container home.

The beans leaned a tad towards sweet but not too much...very smoky flavor. The bits of pork mixed in made it above average for taste. Ribs were tender and although not the best I ever had, they were very good and the rub gave them a tang that I liked but my wife didn't. :) More for me. They actually tasted better the next day when I put the ribs...still wrapped in foil, into the oven just long enough to take the chill off.

I'm off on a motorcycle ride today with a destination of Big W's BBQ in Wingdale, NY. My friends all love it so I guess it's only right for me to check it out.

Ribs come out with just the dry rub on them. BBQ sauce is an add on you do yourself. I personally like mine dry (most of the time).

I just got back from there with take out. He closed after he served me because he didn't like the texture of his brisket He had just replaced the motor on his smoker and was concerned that it wasn't right so he wouldn't sell the brisket and said the sausage wasn't right but I asked for a taste and thought it was pretty good so he gave me some but didn't charge me for it. I also got a whole rack of pork ribs and they were on par with the ones from Wood's Pit BBQ and Mexican restaurant in Banmtam, CT. The wife didn't care for the ribs but I liked them...and the sausage also. The sides were what you would expect except for the beans. I'm still not sure if I like them or not. Tasted like refried beans, bbq sauce and bits of pork. I will try them again but will call ahead to insure the brisket is ready.
