Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - January 2015

I just bought some of the frozen Korean scallion pancakes and the clerk told me to put a fried egg on there.
Have you guys tried them?

Roti canai / roti prata SFBA Dish of the Month January 2015

I know! It's a great dish that easily adapts to regional differences. I posted about an Indian version above.

I love this dish.
Did you know that the Malabar Paratha at Tirupathi Bhima's in Milpitas is the Indian version of this dish? It will knock your socks clean off.

Grocery Outlet -- January 2015

We always shop at the one on the Richmond/El Cerrito border and we always stock up on the Amy's organic spinach pizzas. Cheap and a great easy dinner.

Oh wow interesting. Thanks! I go to the pho place next door usually though.

Why would anyone go to Denny’s these days?

Three things bug me about my local Denny's.
1) There is a TV blasting nothing but Denny's ads. Weird.
2) The burgers always fall apart; they're all just loose beef thrown onto a bun.
3) The service is always perfunctory.

NAY: Little cocktail veggie samosas in the freezer case. A good fresh samosa will have chunks of potatoes, peas and carrots in there. But these were filled with some weird sort of veggie puree!

Yeah I hate the new opener. I bought a box of broth and when I got it home I realized someone had already opened it.

I think with a bread machine for your dough, and a willingness to boil the bagels, you could make some pretty awesome ones. Yum

Brown Sugar Kitchen uses quick grits, wholesale vendors [Oakland]

I thought it was fashionable to slam Chabon as a carpetbagger here in the East Bay.

That sucks. I'm so glad you mentioned this!

Cool spots open on New Year's Day?

Great idea thanks!

I just discovered Soofoo. They have it at Grocery Outlet too.

Update: it makes a bangin' salad. Highly recommended.

Berkeley/East Bay preferred but I can go to the city too. Looking for something fun and new. Thanks!

I just discovered Soofoo. They have it at Grocery Outlet too.

I had a really good salad at the Whole Foods salad bar on Gilman -- kale, something called "Soofoo" (that I had never heard of), and a tangy lemon dressing. It was so tasty that when I saw a bag of soofoo at Grocery Outlet I had to grab it. Just .99
It is sort of like a pilaf -- brown rice, grains and various pulses, and a bag of seasoning mix. I chose Mediterranean flavor but they have curry flavor too.
The great thing is that the grains and pulses together make a complete protein.
I cooked it in the rice cooker and it came out great. Today I'll add it to a kale salad and see how it goes.

Ici is sooooo overrated. I prefer iScream on Solano in Albany, Try it and you'll agree.

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - December 2014 [OLD]

My fave right now is Joyous Joe, a gift box of four awesome coffees naturally flavored with spices. People even buy them to sell on eBay!

Trader Joes... Please, just ring up my groceries.

It's your TJs. The ones I go to, the staff are too busy flirting with EACH OTHER to chat with me.

Costco returns?

I once returned one of their monster chicken pot pies. So salty it was inedible. Go for it.

Anyone else getting tired of "new" Craft Beer,Gourmet Burgers & 3rd Wave Coffee joints in Bay Area?

Ha ha, I for one LOVE the choices. Imagine living in Kansas somewhere. I dare ya!

I figured out why In/Out fries suck

Old oil is not only nasty but carcinogenic as well ... no thanks

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - December 2014 [OLD]

Two items were complete failures this month, for me ...
Coconut pancake mix (TOOOOO SWEET)
Frozen falafels (TOUGH AND FLAVORLESS)

Frozen falafels ... YUK. What an insult to falafels. They're dry, grainy and gross. Avoid.

Re-thinking Berkeley icons at holiday time

Hyperbowler ... hi, hope you're doing well! I am a huge CB fan and I've tasted almost every flavor they make and even I think they all taste sort of the same but in a good way!

Re-thinking Berkeley icons at holiday time

And the funny thing is that Ici ice cream isn't really all that good. I will take Scream on Solano over Ici any day of the week.

When it comes to things like the cheddar cheese scone I am more loyal to Arizmendi Lakeshore actually. The staff at Arizmendi is MUCHMUCHMUCH more nice and friendly too.

Re-thinking Berkeley icons at holiday time

Yeah I agree with you that they all pretty much taste the same in a way ... but if you like them then you will consistently be pleased. My only fail at Cheeseboard was the peach/bleu cheese one, but to be fair I brought it home and ate it cold.

"Worst of 2014" nominations

I didn't attend but I have a feeling the big ramen festival snafu in Japantown is going to figure prominently on this list.
